Have any of you tried this? (SweetFX)

Just tried this myself using Jean-Paul's settings and I believe it's a keeper! I've been using ENB since it was released, I've tried other options but so far I've always gone back to ENB. This may finally change that, I'm really liking the look! Thanks for the heads up folks

Yea, but FXAA is not compatible with DX10 preview...

My SweetFX settings.   You can preview and download my setting from here.

  • Had a quick look at it and it sure is impressive. Just download SweetFX 1.3.7z, unzip it, move the files and directory inside to your main FSX folder and there you go. The scroll lock key switches it

Thanks for the shots, maybe the DX10 mode is improving on the performance, but you say 4-5 frames, yet I see in the above shots definitive 12frames. 62-50, making it similar to my results, that is about 15-20% drop.

Yes, of course, you are correct. I mentioned that in my post. However, in my experience, that is not typical for me. Also, I had both the HDR and bloom enabled just to really see a worst case scenario. I am sure that it may vary with where you are flying and what you are flying. However, as with anything else, YMMV. 20% would be a severe drop.

Indeed on when and where, it depends. But I tested at 3 addon airports, on all 3 I have seen a severe 20% drop, eg. NGX VC going down from 27-28 to 22-23FPS, which is if you take as it is, quite a lot when it comes to the FPS below 30. If above, and it drops, who cares really. See what I mean? Even in the pure water scenery with coulds sever drops were noticed.

Unfortunately I can't seem to get this working on my setup (DX10). I get an error message on startup along the lines of 'Unable to load component' (can't remember exactly as I'm at work) and it bails straight out. If I then go and remove the files (8 iirc) from my FSX folder, FSX works again but obviously without SweetFX being involved.

And ideas?

Word Not Allowed,

Are you using HD clouds i.e. 2048 or 4096 with matching TBM? If so this may be why. Worth a shot just to see.

I am using 2048 clouds, and my sim TML is set to 4096. What do you mean?

I had been using 2048 and had FPS loss but no FPS loss with SweetFX disabled. I went to 1024 clouds and it works fine with no FPS loss. Not sure why SweetFX would care about the larger texture set.

Read about this SweetFX on my way home from work today and installed it the first thing I did when I got home and must say FSX never looked this good before. Previously I've been using ENB but after lots of problems with crashes I decided to get rid of it although I have been missing the effect but this one looks even better as I recall what ENB looked like!

I'm just about to do my first test flight with this effect enabled and I'm really looking forward to it and hope I won't get any problems since I read a number of people had problems with SweetFX as well. If I can have this look in FSX without any problems I will be a real happy camper!!

One odd thing though I already noticed but that is not a big issue is I'm using two PCs and monitors´running FSX on my main PC and various addons like AS 2012, EFB and some other stuff on my second PC and to be able to control both PCs with the same keyboard and mouse I'm using a freeware utility called Input Director and whenever I move the cursor from my FSX PC/monitor to the second PC/monitor the SweetFX effect is disabled and as soon as I return the cursor to the FSX PC/monitor it's enabled again...just as if I toggled the effect using the Scroll Lock key...

So...just completed my first test flight with SweetFX and I'm thrilled to say everything went just fine with no problems what so ever...no crashes and no noticable FPS loss and this was online on IVAO with some other traffic in PMDG's NGX, AS 2012, my normal high FSX settings and addon sceneries both at my origin and destination and again...I never saw FSX looking this good before! I was flying using real time so it was a flight in the dark but still the sharpness and the darkness looked SO much better than default FSX!!

A BIIIIG thank you to the original poster who gave us this HU !! I'm already longing for next flight

OK, lemme do some tests.

EDIT:

Installed 1024 clouds + 1024 TML, same drop in FPS.

UK2000 EGKK situation with default 737:

- on: 33fps

- off: 46fps

Too much for my taste, even for such beautiful graphics. At least going very closely to 30, which I must maintain, and when I load NGX, well... you know where this is leading.

I think this tool should be promoted, but only with a big warning sign: beware of the performance drop! It's almost as bad as using internal bloom.

Why the huge cloud textures anyway? I run my cumulus01.bmp at 256x256 and to be honest I can't tell a difference between that and 1024. I've never even considered going larger than 1024. cumulus01.bmp is one of the biggest frame rate killers in the sim when you have a heavy 3D cloud cover. If I post screenshots people often ask what cloud textures I'm using - they look good. Try it.

I'd question my monitor quality, resolution or eyesight if this is the case. I can clearly differentiate between 256, 1024 or 4096. Even between 2048 and 4096.

Oh btw. I have a question about SweetFX: is there a way to set deafult disabled state when loading sim? Kind of effect on demand, if you will...?

OK, lemme do some tests.

Well, that's just to fricken weird. I have no answer.

Just a thought, maybe ATI users are experiencing fps loss? I have nvidia 560gtx oc and never experienced any fps loss with sweetfx and enb, even with bloom.

Worth investigating.
