Have any of you tried this? (SweetFX)

Granted my eyesight isn't what it used to be but with the 2.75 readers I have a pretty good idea what I'm looking at and my monitor is fine at 1920x1080. Yep, you'll see some degradation at lower resolutions especially when you're very close or actually in the clouds, but then the regs state 500' below and 1000' above or something like that anyway. Also note that I'm only talking about cumulus01.bmp, my 2D cloud textures are 1024 because they don't have the frame impact that the 3D clouds do. I guess it's a tradeoff that happens to be worth it to me since I don't linger in the clouds anymore than I have to anyway. I'm seeing no measureable FPS loss whatsoever with SweetFX enabled/disabled BTW. Again, try it - objectively.

Yea, but FXAA is not compatible with DX10 preview...

My SweetFX settings.   You can preview and download my setting from here.

  • Had a quick look at it and it sure is impressive. Just download SweetFX 1.3.7z, unzip it, move the files and directory inside to your main FSX folder and there you go. The scroll lock key switches it

OK, I'll test 512x512, as these are the lowest REX can do.

And just to correct on one thing: the EGKK situation I mentioned has no clouds in it, so they won't play any role.

I do not wish to pursue this subject any more, so gonna leave it with this comment:

No chance I am going 512x512 clouds (not to mention 256x256):

It is the same as with any low quality texture - far away all looks the same, and performs better. The problem happens when you approach closer. And you do fly through clouds in the sim, very often that is.

I'm running REX HD clouds and I would have to say there is a big difference in quality of clouds from 512s.

I am seeing a slight fps drop but haven't done extensive benchmarking yet. I started messing with adjustments in flight and then began getting CTDs as soon as I would save the file and press PAUSE to reload. Nothing I could do after that would fix CTDs unless I reinstalled the base set of files again overwriting the originals. Don't know whats happening.

Thx for HU, will give a go later since FXAA won't work in DX10.

Just tried this, for some reason I am seeing no difference with Scroll lock and FPS in full screen mode is unplayable, had 1 FPS just but normal FPS in windowed mode.

Could someone who is using this please discuss how it looks at night?

Better yet, post some screens?

Thanks!

Ok , I have installed it , I had to switch it on & off loads of times cos the effect is so subtle I can hardly tell the difference , my frames are locked at 30 in fsx & it dances 29.9 /30 all the time, on or off .

Gpu is ATI 6970 , is there a console to adjust the settings or do you have to change the text in the settings folder ? I would like it a little darker. Thanks.

For me, setting DIGITAL VIBRANCE on the Nvidia Control Panel to +70% gives similar results. Try it!

It is very adjustable via a text file (SweetFX_settings.txt). It is commented pretty clearly in the file as to what the settings do. Just pause FSX. Open the SweetFX_settings.txt file from the FSX folder. Change a parameter. Save the file. Go back to FSX and press the pause/break key to see the results. You don't have to quit FSX. You don't even have to unpause FSX. You will see the effects immediately.

Those who do not see a change might want to try editing the file with some extreme settings just to see if there is a difference. Perhaps, on your system, the default settings don't show much difference.

As mentioned by other posters however, some are experiencing an FPS loss with this effect. You may be one of the lucky ones without much of a loss or you may not be seeing it due to the locked frames.

Good luck!

Here ya go :)

HUGE THANKS for the settings file, this has definitely made FSX look loads better on my system, I've tried ENB and FXAAinjector before but for some reason I've never been able to get it to look as stunning as it does now with sweetfx + your settings file, it's also not so dark at night like other post processing effects, doesn't menu crash like ENB used to do, impressing!

Real world CPL holder.

Why the huge cloud textures anyway? I run my cumulus01.bmp at 256x256 and to be honest I can't tell a difference between that and 1024. I've never even considered going larger than 1024. cumulus01.bmp is one of the biggest frame rate killers in the sim when you have a heavy 3D cloud cover. If I post screenshots people often ask what cloud textures I'm using - they look good. Try it.

Hey Jim~

FEX 256 clouds have been my secret weapon for years :>)

@Ahmed

No problemo mate. :)

The funny thing is, I didn't test that settings at night, totally forgot to! :) At least I know for sure that settings file rocks at day.

Second, I configured it from VC with tinted windows, so I made it brighter and more realistic. From spot views the clouds are maybe too bright. But again, it depends how you configured your monitor.

cheers

This is postprocess fx tool like enbseries. Shade is altering FSX files.
