November 2, 201213 yr Hi all Ok this is going to sound a bit strange but basically I want to go back to square one in my knowledge of flying and was just wondering how. What I mean is, I know how to get a 737 from A to B through programming an FMC, using LNAV and VNAV to follow my flight plan and doing an ILS approach. But ask me to fly a Cessna from A to B and I wouldn't even know how to begin let alone how to do a non ILS approach etc. What resources are out there to give me a good grounding in the basics of flying. I jumped straight into airliner flying which I love but there is so much knowledge out there that I don't have! Even in a 737 I would have no idea how to go about doing an approach into a non ILS runway so I think I need to go back to basics, the question is how. Tutorials? Built in FSX lessons? YouTube? Any tips gratefully received. Thanks
November 2, 201213 yr 1) Aviator90 vide tutorials on youtube 2) Book: FSX For Pilots - Real World Training 3) Basic pilot handboos from FAA (free, or buy them as inexpensive iPad apps) Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
November 2, 201213 yr I think that there is one of the default FSX missions, which deals with the approach to a runway(I thinks it's tutorial #5, but I'm not toatlly sure), and also the flying lessons with Rod Machado are really great when it comes to navigating and learning how to fly procedures. Regards, Flo Florian
November 2, 201213 yr Read the Learning Center stuff in FSX and do the FSX missions that go with them.
November 2, 201213 yr I find this to be a great resource: http://www.amazon.co...g/dp/0764588222 It'll take you from the basics in a Cub, to multi-engine IFR in a Baron. With PPL work and IFR work in between for C172 and Mooney. I'm working my way through this at the moment, substituting the default aircraft as follows: A2A J-3 Cub in stead of the default RealAir Cessna 172 (for FS9 but works in FSX. An FSX-native RealAir C172 is on the way) RealAir Aermacchi SF20 intead of the default Mooney Bravo RealAir Duke B60 instead of the default Baron. That way, if your used to PMDG, you can keep as near as possible to the PMDG standard. Expensive, though, if you don;t already have them in your hangar. H
November 2, 201213 yr Okies, some basics from various sources.... Some of these may appear old, but the theory is the same. http://aafcollection.info/items/detail.php?key=198&pkg=ls!title!!198!1!title!up!20 http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/basic-nav-general.htm http://stoenworks.com/Tutorials/Navigation%20tutorial.html http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aircraft/
November 2, 201213 yr Fly Rod Machados instruction videos in FSX training center. zLA's pilot cert program is also fairly useful, especially if you are flying online http://pilotcerts.laartcc.org/page/ratings.html vatsim s3
November 2, 201213 yr Wow some very good suggestions here! I've personally used http://www.flightsimbooks.com and the videos from FSX404. My MSFS 2020 repaints: Flightsim.to - Profile of HStreet Working on MSFS 2024 versions.

November 2, 201213 yr Author Wow, thanks everyone! This is why I love this community! One thread and a wealth of information I've never come across! Thanks all Martin
November 2, 201213 yr Hi Martin, I have about 200 hours in the C172 with an instrument rating -never did fly anything above 180hp (which requires an endorsement on the license), nor a complex aircraft (fixed prop and/or rectractable), which also requires a license endorsement. Nor anything with more than 1 engine (multi), which requires a whole new license, and certainly nothing that requires a rating But if you have any questions regarding basic flight (which all pilots need to convince an examiner they can do proficiently before doing much esle), you can PM me. I don't get much time at my PC these days as I'm too busy at work, but I will try and respond to any specific questions that you might have. Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
