November 8, 201213 yr f you just use REX for textures is their any point in bothering with this somewhat complicated upgrade? If using only textures, then no, as the main improvements are to the weather engine. Regards. DIMITRI
November 8, 201213 yr Commercial Member If you want overdrive textures then you will need to upgrade as we will no longer be offering REX 2 + Overdrive. Reed StoughManaging PartnerREX SIMULATIONS website: www.rexsimulations.comsupport: www.rexaxis.com
November 8, 201213 yr The new upgrade is easy, and the program set up (once installed, and easy to do) is as simple as clicking boxes to your liking. The REX forum has very simple instructions. The entire process is not even on the level of adding aircraft liveries.
November 8, 201213 yr I think what makes it complicated is I didn't know you had to be 'verified' to be able to view the rest of the REX forum. I have now asked to be verified in the verification thread. I checked my download again at the FlightSimStore -- there is no simple upgrade option, only a full download (without OD) at 4.25 GB. Have you seen their upgrade flow sheet?? Could they make it any more difficult for their users? Its like Microsoft having multiple versions of Windows 7 vs. Mac OS. Perhaps that is why OPUS is so popular because I feel it is simplicity as its best vs AS2012 and REX weather. Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
November 8, 201213 yr Author Don't give up, Omni. The version number is the value you are looking for when using that upgrade path pdf. So if you look up your current one from the REX boot or help screen, you can read which upgrade package fits your currently installed stuff. If you don't have it installed yet, perhaps that full new version from FSS is the best idea. With installing, you will have the latest Ess+ engine and only miss the Overdrive stuff, which mainly are extra textures. As far as I can see, all Overdrive things currently only come from the REX forums. Hence the need to register and verify there. I wonder which texture is used for it CoolP,I think the relevant file is,the cirrus_overcast03.bmp,located in the FSX Texture folder. Thanks for the information, Dimi.
November 8, 201213 yr If you want overdrive textures then you will need to upgrade as we will no longer be offering REX 2 + Overdrive. Please consider uploading CAB 13 and CAB 14 as a seperate download for people already having downloaded the OD package multiple times. November 8, 201213 yr Is there a patch I can get to limit the download size? I have Rex essential installed. Why don't they just put overdrive and plus together? So much confusion. Yea i was like you deciding on what to get the plus or the o/d decided to get the o/d, and went to the pinned topic and i just downloaded the update patch where it just updates over the rexe already installed. the install was quick and easy as long you follow the intructions given in the pinned topics I7-8700k,Corsair h1101 cooler ,Asus Strix Gaming Intel Z370 S11 motherboard, Corsair 32gb ramDD4,, gtx 1080ti Card, RM850 power supply Peter kelberg
November 8, 201213 yr Author Regarding the corrupted files. We have pulled the current files and will be re-issuing new ones. This will take sometime in that we have to upload 4.5 gigs twice and then download and test them again. We are very sorry for the inconvience this has cause some of you. It appears this was caused by our final zip compression process. We thank you for your patience and understanding. http://www.realenvir...plus-overdrive/
November 8, 201213 yr But Opus doesn't come with textures like REX...correct? If so, how do you make sure you are using the right textures for the type of weather you are flying in? There aren't any 'right textures' for the type of weather you are flying in... That's just marketing hype for a feature that (I think) most people don't even use. I use ONE set of textures (REX 2 btw) and that's it. You don't HAVE to load new textures everytime you get new weather! I wonder how many people actually load new textures for every flight...? I think most people also use one set of textures. The idea of loading new textures everytime... yikes. FSX is created in such a way that it can portray EVERY kind of weather with just one set of textures. After all, FSX itself also came with one set of textures...! Granted, some kinds of weather may look even more convincing with certain kinds of sky textures, but it's not mandatory or necessary to load new textures every time. I've been flying with the same set of textures for years! ^_^ (So all those new HD textures are wasted on me: that's why I didn't even download Overdrive.)
November 8, 201213 yr REX II was a great product and Essentials is even better. What I love most is the speed at which textures are installed. I'm one who does enjoy trying the different lighting, skies, and textures. REX is still my first choice for textures. As for the weather engine, Opus has become the standard to which all engines are measured. It's actually great that both REX and Opus are two different programs that do different things. I'm waiting patiently to download the full version of REX Essentials Plus, then I'll download Overdrive. Thanks to the REX team for doing an outstanding job improving their software. MSFS
November 8, 201213 yr Have you seen their upgrade flow sheet?? Could they make it any more difficult for their users? Yes, and I don't get what's getting some so wrapped around the axle. Really. What they've done is given you options to go from just about any version to just about any other version. Figure out what you've got (they give all version numbers on their site so you can check your version, plus a flow chart), figure out where you want to go, grab your download and do it. Or, you can DL the whole shootin' match (with and without the OD textures) and start fresh. They have both flow charts and specific links for each option. And the whole "verify" thing - has been publicized and on-going since way back before the initial Essentials release. All they're trying to do is get their users from a variety of older versions up to the current levels with either upgrades or full re-installs. Without charging any of their existing users. The nerve of those guys. Scott
November 8, 201213 yr It's really not that complicated. Download the full version of Essentials, then download Overdrive. How hard is that? MSFS
November 8, 201213 yr You don't HAVE to load new textures everytime you get new weather! I wonder how many people actually load new textures for every flight...? I think most people also use one set of textures. The idea of loading new textures everytime... yikes. I think most of us generally stick with one texture set, though I will say that since moving to Opus I actually spent more time looking for textures that matched better what Opus was giving me. Letting the old version of REX pick textures to match wx never did much for me. I'd end up with lots of weird turquoise skies and such like. Better to pick my own and then move on. That said, the texture load process isn't that slow if you're just changing sky textures and leave all the water stuff alone. Doing so is, and has been, well documented in the manual. Granted, some kinds of weather may look even more convincing with certain kinds of sky textures, but it's not mandatory or necessary to load new textures every time. Again, agreed but we all do this for different reasons. I'm sure there are some who do screen shots, for example, who spend a lot of time and effort on just the right set of textures. Scott
November 8, 201213 yr Again, agreed but we all do this for different reasons. I'm sure there are some who do screen shots, for example, who spend a lot of time and effort on just the right set of textures. Very true! I mainly said what I said because I had the impression nicolau is thinking that changing textures is mandatory. And his remark may lead others to believe the same. (There are a lot of people who don't really know how these addons actually work (how for instance REX simply replaces the standard set of textures and that you can have only one set of textures installed and that you don't have to run REX everytime if you only use it for textures etc. etc.... ^_^) Maybe nicolau knows it all but I just wanted to make sure he knows it's not mandatory.)
