Orbx England What Do You Think?

Featured Replies

I took off from 'my' local airport, Stapleford Abbots. Pleasantly surprised by the level of detail for a default Orbx strip, almost to the level of UK2000. As you said Geoff, a bit of a curates egg but on the whole pretty good. I took a trip up the A12 to Chelmsford to find we had a smoking chimney! I didn't realise we had one and the cathedral wasn't in evidence. Further up the A12 Hatfield Peveral, Kelvedon and Witham put a smile on my face as they are very accurate. More trees and woods than I imagined.

Over all a very good effort given that, as someone on this forum said, flying over your home turf you'll be far more critical than if you're flying over somewhere you've never been.

'Performance'? Installed it, didn't look at settings or owt, fired it up. Smooth as silk. No idea about frames.

I posted this in the screenshot forum while I thought I was posting it here. So I will post a copy of it here too. If you know what I mean...

So far I am pretty happy with England. There is one thing I do not like: some of the trees. One type of trees is looking very good: nice 3D and realistic, another kind is sticking out WAY too much (in spring, that is). But I have the biggest problem with the type of trees that looks utterly FLAT. No 3D at all, no contrast at all, and since those trees are often placed upon shadows that are burned into the textures the look utterly flat, as if something has gone very wrong. Really awful. It looks like a snotty goo. They spoil the otherwise nice graphics for me... I REALLY hope Orbx will fix those trees. As I said, the good looking trees are VERY good looking! I wouldn't mind if the replaced those squashed ones with those...!

So far I like what I see. I really LOVE all the static stuff at all the airports!!!

My initial reactions I've posted here

http://forum.avsim.n...d/#entry2521842

Very mixed feelings so far but off to do more slider tweaking to see what I can get. Some issues can't be fixed by sliders and there are a few but a lot of it is Good and even Very Good.

Geoff

I think you may be missing quite a lot due to too low autogen sliders...? If you look at the first London pictures in the topic you posted in, it looks like FS9: flat and a few buildings awfully sticking out way too obvious. On the screenshot I posted a few posts below it, things look a lot better imho. Still, as you say yourself, you might be expecting too much. Had this been FTX LONDON you might have had a point here and there and a reason to moan but getting this kind of detail in London in an addon that covers the whole of England, I do think you are expecting too much indeed...! ^_^

Concerning performance: just as Ron I installed, I even moved the autogen sliders to extreme and off I went: great performance. My max of 30 all over England and above London fps dips to something like 26 or so. Great stuff.

Not too bad...

That really clearly shows we often see too far away in FSX. ^_^

Ron, that A/B comparison is really useful, thank you for that! :good:

Do you or anybody else have any more of those?

My first impressions are good.

No problem with UK2000 airfields noted so far.

The level of detail is probably not good enough to do VFR flying for real though. Some of the towns are missing or a bit too small. The roads are there but not the builings.

FPS are good though.

It does look good on the whole. Just don't expect to find your house, or your town.

For anyone wondering about other add-ons, here are my layers in scenery library in order:

UK2000 airports (I own 14 of them)

London VFR

Mega Airport Heathrow

ORBX UK

Everything is working great, and the scenery is very impressive so far.

Ok its out ... This is my first Orbx product, im normally a VFR photo scenery user for UK flying but I have mixed views on this right now, I like it ... alot BUT where is my village? I live 3 miles from EGGD and nothing but fields! The Avonmouth area is poorly represented, Brunell's famous suspension bridge has been replaced by a walkway & the quarry where my wife works is a green hole (no she isnt a digger driver LOL), ive built my own vfr scenery objects for Bristol and surrounding areas and at the moment its not compatable ... HOWEVER ... It does not take 3 hours to load via 12 dvd's and cost less than £30, it runs VERY well and looks the part. Is it scenery you can navigate by vfr? NO, Is it better than default ot GEX/UTX? YES, I like it I just dont know if I love it ... Yet!

What are your views?

Rich

Thats weird to hear. I havent gotten it yet ( but I will) however I do have all of Australia and NRM. I live just north of the NRM northern part of the coverage area so im familiar with it, and they did a great job with all the villages etc there. All the towns, hamlets etc are in the correct place and are the correct size. So I dont know why England is any different

cheers

Well, it IS generic scenery based on landclass so it's NOT the kind of scenery where you should expect to find your own house. Roads are accurate and so are waters but buildings, apart from famous landmarks, are generic autogen. That's just how this kind of scenery is. Orbx never told you otherwise.

If a complete city is gone, however, that isn't right: there should at least be something that looks like a city. But again, not with every house and brdige etc. on the exact spot.

You can still fly VFR with the roads and waters though: if you have a map on your lap, you should be able to get anywhere you want to by just comparing what's outside with what is on the map.

Scenery like this should give you a general idea of how things are in real life: it's not a recreation of reality. That is why I probably wouldn't buy this kind of scenery of the place where I live: I would be annoyed by things not being as they should be, even though I know that's impossible. But England and NA is fine with me because I've never been there and it looks quite convicing, almost real. ;) (More real imho then flat photoscenery but that's another discussion. ^_^ )

It is good dont get me wrong but i do feel a little let down but that could be my expectations, Im a RW PPL & CPL with 15 years flying in the SW of England, flying VFR with an ICAO chart would not be as easy as using photo, some VRP's arnt to obvious, maybe i'm expecting too much i dont know ... I do know that after a two hour flight today with real Opus WX it looked good and a overall good experance was had, "personally" it feels it was a bit rushed, some 3d landmark models inculded are a bit crude and some have missing poly's BUT at least they are there!

This morning after stumbling downstairs and after brewing a coffee I discovered that it was released! After drinking half a cup I made my way to the PC and just had to buy it.

First download although appearing to download correctly just froze the PC after clicking the executable (starts to worry) so after two reboots I decided to re-download. It's now mid morning and had to do Saturday chores whilst keeping an eye on progress. Download 2 complete so click exe after unzipping and run as admin the install installs. After the install I do a defrag a) to keep everything sweet and B) because I still have loads of things to finish.

It's now late afternoon and getting dark, the defrag finished ages ago and I had turned the PC of because still had lots to do.

Finally, with lots of anticipation I boot up, check the instructions and click all the appropriate buttons, load up some RWW and wait for FSX to start. I load up the NGX and Heathrow on the runway because I need to be airborne soon...

...UK 2000 Heathrow has been replaced but its looking good. I setup default NGX as I can't be bothered to go through the engine startup etc. 10... 3, 2, 1 ready. Throttle to full, it starts to move. No stutters it's smooth it's cool I reach v1 pull on the yoke, at last I'm airborne. The scenery looks very similar to GTX europe but subtly better, in fact rather good. I have to do a 180 degree turn as I was on the wrong runway to get to London I complete the turn keeping any eye on the scenery which looks good. Finally, I'm heading in the right direction and can see the shard in the distance. As I approach I see something to the right I've not seen before! Wow it's the Olympic stadium. Cool I have a smile on my face. The shard slides past but as I'm still below 1000ft (oops) although its not been rendered brilliantly Its liveable with.

If your waiting for the 'but' it's on it's way. As I slide besides the shard, suddenly I'm lost. where am I? The scenery reminds me if London only because of the way the Thames snakes by, but their is so much missing. No gherkin, no Houses of Parliament, no bridges, no anything apart from the autogen?

This is so wrong! After going back and triple checking the settings and doing a scenery library flush. London is still bare!

Tomorrow guess what I'm doing? Yeah, new download and Start from scratch.

Don't you just love software?

I might have a few personal gripes (which other users seem to have as well) but for me the download, install, setup and running was faultless, i did see the gherkin but cant recall the other items that may be missing

The download and install was smooth for me.

I do think some of the scenery 'tiles' are a bit obvious in places. To me its not as seamless as NZ for eample.

Peter

technically the autogen should not work with others sceneries, but the first information about this problem seems to say it works for example with Earth Simulation. It's a good news but could you please confirm ?

thank you.
