Orbx England What Do You Think?

One of the more ridiculous posts I've seen in awhile. Congratulations. Darn people for not being satisfied after spending their money. Grab the pitchforks and man the ban hammers!!

I'm thinking of starting a team to develop the UK scenery to the standard required by Grumpyrocker and others who are dissatisfied with the ORBX release. It will feature pinpoint accuracy for every village, complete with a guarantee that there will be at least 20% of the major landmarks evident in every city, town or village. All non urban areas will be handcrafted to perfectly represent all farms, nature parks, national parks, forests, woods, moors and the like.

The estimated cost of developing this scenery to the standard required to satisfy every UK flightsimmer inspecting his or her local area for omissions and errors, is two million, eight hundred thousand pounds (2,800,000 pounds). A team of twenty highly skilled developers will be assembled and the project is expected to take no more than eighteen months to complete.

What I need from the flightsimming community is for everyone who feels they could use such a product to put their hands in their pockets and subscribe with funds to get us started. Let's say we have 2,800 UK simmers who want this extra level of detail. All I'm asking is for each and every one of you to put up 1,000 pounds and we will develop this scenery to your satisfaction.

So, how about it, Grumpyrocker? Feel like getting the ball rolling by making the first contribution?

With that kind of blatant sacrcasm I highly doubt you would do the project right, so I'll pass.

Having done much of this type of scenery work i can see both sides. I am a HUGE fan of earth simulations isles of Scilly and Aldernay and see they also have the genX photoreal products with autogen vegetation, really surprized this isn't the must have addon for the UK, especially since i also see they are working on the 3d environment also. Doesn't get more real than that.

Best, Michael

I've just completed yet another 1/2hour stint in ENG and while I was happy at first, I understood about the level of detail and the enormity of the job they took on, my enthusiasm has taken a nosedive.

The more I look, the more obvious mistakes and omissions I see.

I'm not going to bother with it again until an SP arrives, then I'll see. If this were Flight1 I'd ask for a refund. Shame because it's the first - no, the second, product I've been disappointed in. The first was S45, released unfinished but soon to be rectified and from what I've seen to the high standard that is a hallmark of Bill's work.

Don't need to be Flight1, trust me on this Ron, if you paid with a credit card (as I'm sure you did) you can always contact your credit card company and tell them you need to be refunded because you are not satisfied with your purchase if the store where you got the product does not want to do it for you, I'm sure they (the credit car company) will gladly put the money back in your account.

I am starting to repeat myself but... this addon isn't rushed or worse then others. The people who don't like it that much and/or are disappointed are those who actually live there. Now they finally found out how Orbx scenery relates to reality. I really think that's just it. They liked the previous regions more because they didn't know those regions. They didn't know what was missing and it looked great overall. Well, so does England. To me, someone who doesn't actually know the region (been there only once), it looks great and just as good, if not better, then previous addons. I do think that England has even more landmarks 'out of the box' then some other regions did...!

This is both a positive and negative aspect of Orbx scenery -- the fact that their scenery convinces people that an area actually looks like that says a lot for their skills. People love their scenery, as it makes FSX look so much better. But the more you like it, the more likely you'll be disappointed by their depiction of your home town.

Inara and Kaylee from Firefly said this best:

"That's a swan.I like it."

"You do?"

"Looks like it was made with, you know, longing. Made by a person who really longed to see a swan."

"Perhaps because they'd only heard of them by rough description."

Orbx scenery is made for someone who really longs to see that particular part of the world, but can't visit it in person.

Since their PR fiasco last year I have very low expectations and expect ###### service (if it comes from the top you expect the whole company to run that way).

This way you won't be disappointed. The plan has worked out pretty well so far!

Sjeeshhh, what a bummer.... :(

First (yesterday) i was truly surprised not to find a word about this new, wonderful (atleast to me...) England scenery in the FSX forum ( i honestly didn't know about this here unofficial Orbx forum) and now i've arrived here it's almost nothing but sour grapes instead of 'blue skies over the white cliffs of Dover'...

Actually i have been waiting all my pixelpilot life for a good looking and more or less accurate rendition of this beautiful English landmark and so far in vain. Until now !

Ok, i'm not British and know full well that there's more to England than just the white cliffs of Dover but i couldn't wait to rush on over to Duxford in my trusty ol' MG-TD, jump into the cockpit of my immaculate restored Spitfire MK.IIa and set course to Dover at low level, building up the tension as i liked very much what i saw along the way. While i have enjoyed the photoreal VFR Gen-X sceneries tremendously (including treescapes), flying at low level this was quite something else.

Anyway, i don't think i (almost) couldn't have been more pleased with what i saw when i arrived at Dover. As a picture tells a thousand stories, let alone three, what about a few screenies to lively up the somewhat grim atmosphere here. ( if that's allowed.... i have no idea.... )

I mean, i am a flightsimmer for a quarter of a century now so i think i can tell if i have bought a good or a bad scenery. And, for the few hours i have flown over it now i can honestly say i absolutely love it ! Hey, we can't all be British, you know ! :holland-flag:

Btw, I have lots of UK2K airports, including some 'Extremes' and so far they blend in perfectly. ( just as long as the're *above* Orbx ENG in the scenery lib )

So, for me, it's finally 'Blue Skies Over The White Cliffs Of Dover' ! Thank you so much Orbx !! :Applause:

I recall that PAKT was unfinished with accusations it was released early to cash in on xmas. The patch was released some time later with the harbour etc added

How embarressing for you. Caught out lying and misrepresenting another forum member. Of course you will not be able to substantiate any of your accusations with quotes.

I will accept your apology.

What I want is very simple. And most other scenery manages this. That towns and roads are in the same place. It really is simple. Ultimate Terrain manages it. Infact even the default scenery manages it.

The road network in EU Eng is pretty accurate. And the company has added many towns and small villages. Alas the towns in many cases have not been put in the correct location and so are not in the right place on the mesh and are offset away from the roads. The result is villages and towns appear twice, once as vector roads, then again as autogen. This is a simple error. One that ORBX team members in the support forum have aknowledged and have requested screenshots and co-ords of to help fix it.

In the picture below you can see the road network of the village. It is in the correct position in the mesh. But you can see the landclass has not been placed correctly and is moved onto a hill where in reality it does not reside. This is not a limitation of the sim and is something other scenery - including other ORBX products - gets right. This is merely a matter of error checking and testing. All we want is for ORBX to maintain the accuracy that (1) other scenery designers manage as routine (2) the company itself claims to represent. Not all the landmarks from each village. Just simple - landclass positions without very obvious errors over a very large area.

There are hundreds of square miles like this, where essentially towns and villages appear twice, like ghosts of each other. Even if you've never visited this real place below, you only have to look to see it's wrong, and quite ugly too. Certainly not up to the standard of ORBX Australian scenery.

Another example would be the Lake District. This mountainous areas features high peaks without trees or buildings. However in the ORBX scenery - unlike Ultimate Terrain - the region is shown with buildings and trees at high altitudes. Again, not unrealistic expectations from customers, just us not wanting to put up with very silly errors. It really is that simple.

Look at these two pictures. The top one is Ultimate Terrain, the second ORBX. The UT scenery has the village of Winsham placed along the road as should be. ORBX has it some distance away up a hill. See, not a limitation of the sim. Just an error. Perhaps one that is widespread because some whole file is offset from another, rather than individual villages being placed incorrectly. You may also notice more detail from UTX including a stream. These are correct.

Bryan.

It was actually to do with the pre-sale of items at a 'discounted' price -- said items were later discounted even more a few weeks after its initial release. Alas the fanrage that individuals were being treated unfairly. This led to a "No more sales after this one" stance by the Orbx team.

I think that sums it up nicely.

Like many other I have mixed views on ENG - out over the countryside (especially in spring) it's absolutely great and gives a excellent feeling of being over England. Even with the autogen full right it gives great frames. But, the cities look wrong - London has some well modelled landmark buildings but the rest of the autogen does not give any sense of the dense terraced housing of the inner city and near suburban areas - rather large individual buildings pop up randomly, spoiling the effect.

I won't comment on the whole "my house is in the wrong place" discussion (even though mine is ^_^ ) but based on real life experience in both locations, I think that the OrbX AU regions give a much better representation of actual reality when trying to fly VFR.

Overall, glad I bought it and it definitely makes things look nicer - but I don't think it lives up to the hype.

Cheers

Can somebody explain this PR disaster that I keep hearing about.

In a nutshell ORBX took prepaid "pre-orders" offering a small discount. When the product was actually released it coincided with a massive promotional sale of all their products at a MUCH higher discount INCLUDING the latest release. This meant in effect that those who'd pre-ordered and prepaid paid more for it than folk who hadn't.

PLEASE don't start another debate about this because it's history and no amount of stirring can rewrite that history. The complaints got many folk banned from the official forums (Support was still available) and that's why we have THIS section in the AVSim forums.

This section is obviously "NEW" to some posters here and they've followed the "ENGLAND" threads from the general forum. Without reading a years worth of forum entries the criticisms here might seem harsh but many newcomers are missing the fact that most folk who post here have a lot of FTX products, a lot of experience of the bits that they've done astoundingly well and the bits that haven't worked so well. The strength of this section is that people who like the product can discuss it without heavy handed moderation or deletion of their posts.

If folk are new to ORBX and arrive here through ORBX England they've missed a great deal of excellent scenery already produced by different teams of designers and creators from all over the planet and those of us who've bought all of it find the assumption that we "don't understand" or "expect too much" pretty patronising and annoying. Such comments are no more than an arrogant assumption on the part of the poster, although they may not have intended that?

Lets put it another way. If you were thinking of buying a car would you seek advice from your friends who were mechanics? ....or would you ask your maiden aunt who'd only just passed her test?

BTW no personal slight at yourself Cameron it's just that I felt that the issue you raised was relevant to some of the recent posts in this thread.

I would point out that this squabbling amongst ourselves is doing NOTHING to help the offer of improvements extended by the development team here and perhaps some of you may like to post some suggested improvements rather than do that?

Generally I like the new look for England, for what it gives you it's very good value. However, it's a bit of a shock to find the large town you live in has been reduced to a small hamlet and a lot of the coast line has fields of wheat vanishing into the ocean.

If you live in the UK don't fly around your home town - explore a little - you will be a much happier bunny.

Apparently this is the centre of Manchester...
