VRinsight or Opencockpits MCP?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am currently looking to buy either the VRInsight Boeing MCP Combo or the Opencockpits MCP.

Could anyone give me their opinion as I am completely undecided!

I other words... Which is best?? I can get them for roughly the same price!

Thank you

Hi i am also looking into this. ATM the VRInsight Boeing MCP Combo II is 439 EUR and Opencockpits MCP + EFIS is 389 EUR. I would prefer one that is easy to set -up.

To be honest, it's a little unfair to compare the two. The Opencockpits MCP is a replica of a 737 MCP (and I presume an Airbus is available too) and as such would work well in a specific, 737 or Airbus built cockpit. But to be honest, if you are flying a cross section of aircraft in a generic cockpit, then I see absolutely no point. I have just got myself the VRinsight MCP and am extremely happy with it. Not only does it have a built in EFIS and radio section, neither of which the Opencockpits has, or any other specific 737 MCP, it also has 8 spare toggle buttons for additional assignments. So IMO, it's a no brainer. I guess, once again, it's down to personal preference... BTW, the VRinsight is on sale at Flight store http://www.flightstore.co.uk/-c/vrinsight-mcp-combo-boeing-type-p2468

I have the VRInsight MCP combo. I use it with FSUIPC and LINDA. My feedback on it is as follows (and probably won't match other people :) ):

  • I use the MCP (middle section) and COM (right section) parts the most...not the EFIS (left section)...yet. Clicking on virtual buttons in the VC for EFIS seems to make more sense. For me, I find too many inconsistencies between the various buttons/switches etc. on the virtual EFIS. I do fly GA, mostly, so I guess there will be inconsistencies. If you tend to fly only one or two commercial airplanes then the EFIS might do better for you. If there's one thing I *should* use the EFIS for is the RealityXP GNS units but the virtual buttons make more sense...to me.
  • The knobs often jump values when I turn them. Sometimes when I am trying to adjust one or two degrees on the DG it jumps 10 or 20. This may be my sim...dunno. Still...it's only an annoyance. For tuning frequencies, headings, etc. I find it, in general, better than using the virtual knobs.
  • I do use the buttons on the COM panel for various minor things. I truly wish they were toggles instead of buttons. Airplanes have lots of toggles...very few buttons...so their use is limited unless you assign one for "on" and another one for "off"
  • Some specific functionality I have found very difficult to get programmed into the buttons...prop sync on J41, Cowl Flaps on the piston Duke. That would be hugely useful but I think you have to be somewhat of an expert/genius/have-a-lot-of-time to get it working. Most of the important things work fine with no programming at all.

I do suspect that the jumpiness of the knobs has something to do with my sim. I think it's software related but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. Still, it's an annoyance but one I can live with. I agree with Rockliffe. The MCP/Comm parts of the unit are generic enough that I use them for all aircraft. (C182, Duke, Legacy, C337, C310 and on and on).

The one testimonial, I guess, that's the most important...my unit broke a while back (my fault...VRInsight has fantastic support!) and I absolutely hated not having it while I waited for my parts. I guess that speaks volumes.

Vrinsight mcpcombo ii plus linda is the obvious choice if you want simplicity of setup.

Works flawlessly with the ngx - efis buttons are all automatically set. And pretty smooth in my sim set-up, too.

I'm not familiar with the Opencockpits MCP. But with the VRi MCP you get useful functionality with pretty much all your FSX aircraft, MSFX or payware. Heading bug, altimeter subscale, course selection, plus the addition of 2 VOR freq (active and standby)/2 Coms freqs/ADF x 2/Transponder/ 2 DME readouts. And this without configuring anything, just chosing the type you need from the drop down menu when you fire it up (Microsoft generic, or specific type). I use it with a lot with Caranado GA aircraft, and Capt Sim stuff even though I got it for the iFLY 737.

A lot of bang for your bucks....

I was always wondering what was in your rig! Nice. I've thought about getting that VR switch panel. Seems like another big bang for the buck item. We need switches!

there is also a smaller mini Panel by Vrinsight called the Mpanel, very compact in a quite heavy metal casing, For those that are limited in space its a great alternative and handles

comms x2

full auto pilot

navs x 2

transponder

dme

ADFx2

flaps

gear

trim

at around a hundred euro

Hi Gregg, when you say what is in my rig? Do you mean PC wise? If so, it's an i5 2500 running at 4.6Ghz, with 8Gb RAM and a 1.5Mb GTX580. There is a second machine, which is an old 2.2ghz, which runs the third monitor on the left, which has charts, ATC and Google earth. The main rig runs the second monitor on the right in fullscreen mode. I use that for instruments and things. Then the Ipad runs a moving map via WiFi, and a fuel and descent calculator. On the right I have a GoFlight GF-T8 switch panel, which looks after all the external lighting and wipers for the NGX. All the internal lighting has been assigned to the buttons on the MCP. Then there's just the Vrinsight MCP and the VRinsight tact and toggle panel which I use primarily for GA flying. I have to say that the immersion factor has doubled since building this. It really does feel like a cockpit.

I think I'm going to get the toggle panel. Do you use the buttons on the left side of that? Also, on the MCP, do you have any problem with the knob values jumping? I'd love to get rid of that annoyance.

I've got a O/C MCP that I use with the PMDG737NGX and I love it. It works great and reflects exactly what's shown in the SIM.

Before I bought it I thought about the VRInsight but decided to go with the more prototypical O/C version because 1) it looks more realistic and cooler :) and 2) in case I decided to go with a more prototypical build I'll already have the proper MCP.

Really depends on your desires. Vri's MCP is a swiss knife that eliminates the need for multiple units, but like most have said it's not realistic "looking" Opencocpits MCP is designed for one sole function and is meant to fill the need for authenticity on a budget. Which one is more functional? VRi by far. Which one looks more like the real ones..Opencockpits. I
