Just Bought the PMDG 737-800/900

Well gentlemen. I have just completed a instrument flight with the 737NGX and I have come to the conclusion that it is a joke. PMDG are really scraping the bottom of the simulation barrel here. The instructions, as we have seen, are a disgrace (if PMDG seriously expect me to read through several hundred/thousand pages of instructions before getting onto the first rung of the ladder, then they should be paying me) whilst only someone who has never sat in the front of an airliner, much less flown one, would ever accept that the 737NGX has an especially high degree of realism.

This is not a judgement quickly reached, in fact I enjoy using these simulators since they enable me to keep up to date with an activity from which I retired many years ago. Occasionally I am asked by the History Channel (etc) to contribute to their aviation documentaries and arising from that, I am sometimes asked to review books and simulators which is how I come to be grappling with the 737 NGX. I have, I think, given it a reasonable trial, spending three or four days (much of which was due to the inadequacy of the documentation and I think it fair to say that the product will get a drubbing,

Poor guy. It would be one thing if I believed he honestly thought the NGX is cruddy and unrealistic relative to other flight simulation airplanes that he has used, but instead I think it is very clear to all that he is just casting aspersions just to make people feel bad. I wonder what inadequacy he is compensating for? No, actually I don't really care.

Either you're just trolling everyone or you really don't feel like going through the introduction and tutorials offered with the NGX.

Those three short documents give you all you need. Several people told you this throughout the thread. Had you gone through them, you wouldn't have made the statement "several hundred thousand pages" when talking about your snap decision about how poor you think the NGX is and it's supplied documentation.

The only thing "inadequate" was the amount of time you put into reading the basic documents.

I would have to say I would be much more inclined to be interested in comments by confirmed RW 737 pilots, and the videos I have seen from them. Over someone who claims to be an expert in the field but has problems finding and following a checklist in the documents provided.

From the comments made I would suggest the default 737 would be much more suitable for the OP. Shame since the NGX is fantastic...

Ok I've been lurking on this thread, and it's definitely very trollish smelling at this point. Look I don't have the highest of IQ's and I was able to complete a successful flight in a couple hours with the included NGX tutorials. As a home cockpit builder, retired commercial simulator builder, and real world private pilot I can appreciate fidelity in a desktop simulator, and the NGX VC, along with Trackir and Ezdok has given me the closest fidelity, short of sitting in my cockpits, that I have ever experienced in 30 years of desktop simulation. It's all about suspension of disbelief however, and maybe for the OP his brain is wired 2D. Bottom line don't like the NGX move on. I just bought the Aerosoft Airbus X Extended and after a few days determined for a few reasons at this point I don't like it, so it was time to move on and be happy.

Merry Christmas and God Bless

The key to success with anything from tying shoelaces to landing a 747 is a clear set of instructions. The only manual - and poorly produced - that came with my 737 NGX is a small booklet that runs you through the FMC process but ignores everything else. Where are the thousand pages of manuals you speak of? The 747-400 had a folder which included a dozen or so manuals but I cannot locate an equivalent for the 737 NGX.

Incidentally the manual is not a Boeing manual. It is simply a rather poorly written booklet by PMDG that has a Boeing kitemark. I imagine PMDG paid through the nose to get it on the cover in order to give a verisimilitude of oneness with the aircraft manufacturer.

I am starting to think this is a joke.

A small booklet, LOL it would take month to read all the documentaion that came with the ngx

Plus in your later posts it sounds like your a retired pilot.. HMMM Then this should be simple for you

The best ever manual I have for quick learn on 737 NG is by Mike Ray that you can get at Amazon.

Search for "Flight Simulator Manual by Mike Ray"

This manual is a very easy read packed with pictorials and step-by-step from setup to landing.

Why should he have to buy something from Amazon? Everything he needs came with the NGX for no additional cost (or the cost of the plane factored in the documentation).

I second you should get FS2Crew.

However, with OpusFSX having entered the scene, I wouldn't go for EZCA any more. I used it before and dumped it now. Opus gives you the same comprehensive camera tools which make setting up your own views really easy, so you can navigate the VC exactly the way YOU like it. Plus, on top of that, Opus gives you real world weather. (Actually, it's mainly a Weather engine. The camera stuff is a free goodie.)
