DX10 No More Flickering/Shimmering Runways in Windows 8

I've used DX10 from the first time out of the box with FSX. I just put up with the funny taxi guide arrows and flickering across some runways, because the entire scene always looked somehow more inviting. As Jim says the shadows in the cockpit views add a lot to immersion, the light glare is better than DX9 and is handled by DX10 better. I've installed the DX10 fix, and I've also installed a modified rain shader, which basically clears up all DX10 issues for me.

Although installing addons can take the puff out of FSX, some don’t. Adding planes and scenery slows down the start-up times for FSX, and some addons slow down the FSX simulation. I uncheck scenery in the FSX scenery list that I don’t need for the flight, which helps a little. With over 260 planes installed, FSX sits quite a while in the plane menu on my system.

Steve

The DX10 option was only recently made available to me when I upgraded my video card drivers to the newest beta. With DX10, performance is significantly better, especially in the exterior views.

I thought I had found my magic bullet after experiencing great performance with FlyTampa and FSDT airports, but unfortunately, UK2000 Gatwick and Heathrow, which I received for Christmas, perform more poorly (sometimes less than 20 frames/s). European Aerosoft airports, which I plan investing in, probably won't perform any better. . . .

Here is some testing I did with DX10...love it...please don't mind the paning around as I was testing and pushing the rig to the max under different scenario..

Mark,

Make sure your HD is defragged well.

Its perfectly defragged using O&O Complete Name method. Beats me what the issue is but at least it flies great when it finally loads. Total time is probably 3 to 5 minutes depending on scenery.

Is there a way to reverse the patch? I have downloaded and thought I would try but wanted to be able to back out gracefully.

The patch only affects DX10 files. It does not touch DX9 files whatsoever. This is why you are editing the Shader 10 stuff. 10 = DX10. I am using the exact same settings I use for DX9 and DX10. Some DX10 users are making special configs just for DX10 but personally I don't think it is necessary. Same goes with display driver settings. Don't touch those either when in DX9 or DX10. There are some anomalies still with DX10 and that mainly relates to night time runway lighting as there are some airports that are not DX10 compatible.

Best regards,

Jim

Mark,

This happened to me recently too and I think it was the addition of MegaScenery (I have Maryland installed so far). MegaScenery Socal was okay though. I reinstalled FTX/Orbx PNW and that slowed the startup a little bit more. Before installing these addons, I was getting less than 30 second startups. Now they are over 1 minute and longer. I have not reinstalled MyTrafficX yet but I know for a fact AI programs will increase startups considerably. I get a startup 'hang' at around 6% and then around 20% too but it quickly starts up after that.

Are the ORBX airport lights compatible?

Here is some testing I did with DX10

Alain,

Two more great videos! I am totally impressed. The quality of the video images was near real world. The helicopter video had an excellent representation of the shadows inside the cockpit too. Thanks for posting.

They are as far as I have seen reports in the DX10 forum. I have many Orbx airports and scenery installed and so far I have not seen a conflict even at night. Airports/scenery made specifically for FSX are more compatible than scenery that came from FS9. The program Addon Converter X will fix most FS9 textures on the fly.

I've tried DX10 using the settings in the DX10 forum (including Steve's fixes) but I still had vsync tearing. Is there something I'm missing?...

Hi,

I installed the basic, no bonus changes and noticed that it set the display to Billinear. I did notice that the AA is terrible so I checked AA in the UI and it did a pretty good job but not what I am used to.

Now, here is the big question. What the heck should I be noticing LOL. I cannot see really much difference. I must be missing something. I also checked Light Bloom but saw no difference nor impact on FPS or smoothness.

Rain and water should look different, but for me, the biggest (and best) difference was the increase in performance, particularly in exterior/wing views (45+ frames/s with the PMDG B747).

Are the ORBX airport lights compatible?

Here, DX10 with Orbx light, that was done before Steve's fix....strong wind at landing...lol

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but what aircraft addon is that? And about those landing lights, do those come with the aircraft, modded or something? The strobes look like A2A 3d lghts.
