January 8, 201313 yr Author I'd love to hear what you think about it with the new FDE. No problem. When i get a copy and get to try it out, i will report back. It will be a while though as it depends upon when i get the file, and i will not have access to my simming machine for a week or so. This post has given me some really good tips - i REALLY appreciate everyones input. The Lancair seems to be way ahead of the game but i think is still a little too fast for my requirements. I am therefore swinging toward the Aersoft Katana as a stop-gap until A2A's C172 and Cherokee surface (and using my C210 for longer IFR if the FDE proves acceptable), then i think it will be those all the way. I cannot wait!!!! I cannot wait!!!! I've seen some people post good things about the Katana. I don't have it but I love the concept of having all of the outages, oil checks, circuit breakers...all the little details that you have to deal with with a real airplane...and an amazing RW safety record too. Real Air is also working on a C172. Gregg Seipp "A good landing is when you can walk away from the airplane. A great landing is when you can reuse it." i9 64GB RAM, GTX-5090

I don't have it but I love the concept of having all of the outages, oil checks, circuit breakers...all the little details that you have to deal with with a real airplane.. There's no doubting the Katana is a terrific plane. I was enthralled with all the 'maintenance' that had to be carried out in 'real' mode. But having done the walk around and checked the oil etc. etc. etc. a few dozen times it begins to lose it's appeal. It becomes auto-click mode,(click, click, click, done that) not like a real walk round where you life can depend on doing it properly. Thankfully Marcel put in a 'dispense with the faffing about mode, but fly it properly or you'll break it' mode. In that format it's still is a great plane...if you're not in a rush! January 8, 201313 yr Author Yep i can see that happening all too quickly! Just spotted something else.... Robin DR400 from Aerosoft seems shortly for release. Not an IFR, but an interesting alternative. Anyone know much about it? 2 things concern me from the limited information available.... 1. Gauges look 2D in the beta screenies! 2. Does it have all the bells & whistles of the Katana (eg. working circuit breakers, maintenance/damage module etc...)? Will keep an eye open for this one. January 8, 201313 yr Some things to keep an eye out for, Most of these might be too fast for your needs but somthing to look foward to otherwise. Alabeo is working on a Staggerwing Carenado has their TBM Milviz working on an MU-2 Razbam has Merlin/Metro series developing RealAir and A2A with their 172s. I think A2A's Comanche might be quite a ways off. For somthing different, you could hold out for Aerosofts AN-2  "The knack of flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Douglas Adams Tejon 'TJ' Stanley
January 8, 201313 yr So, are you going to buy something or just talk about it? We're all agog to know what you settle on! The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA
January 8, 201313 yr For somthing different, you could hold out for Aerosofts AN-2  That wouldn't really be a light aircraft, would it? Anyways, if you consider an AN-2, I'd rather take a look at SibWing's, that one looks better IMHO. I've been flying the Carenado Caravan a lot lately, and with the updated FDE it flies really great! January 8, 201313 yr Author So, are you going to buy something or just talk about it? We're all agog to know what you settle on! Well i have been given lots to think about so will take my time to research fully and opine, however per my previous post, i am currently swayed toward the Katana as a stop gap until the A2A C172 and Cherokee are released. Of course im going to "talk about it" here - it would be strange forum if people didnt talk about things! I will likely make my purchase in the next week or two and will be certain to let all you agog people know what i settle on! I appreciate everyone's input very much. Thanks. January 8, 201313 yr I took screenshots of all my GA-esque craft and posted it in the screenshot forum for those wishing to compare styles and types. I certainly don't have everything, and people are very welcome to add to the collection for reference. I hope this can help folks like Rich who are deciding what to get. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/396542-collection-of-ga-vcsthumbnail-heavy/ Cheers TJ "The knack of flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Douglas Adams Tejon 'TJ' Stanley

January 8, 201313 yr Love the legacy and the Katana. They are complete different beasts though. You could pull the throttle back in the Legacy, it cruises nicely at slower speeds and saves you fuel. What about the Carenado Skymaster, it is great and very unique! -Iain Watson-
January 8, 201313 yr Yeah agreed with Hellfire and others, You can fly the Lancair slower for better fuel economy and range. If you firewall it, yeah it moves quickly. Yes, it is faster than the RV, BF-108, Safir, your average Cessna/Piper/Beech and so on, but it isn't breakneck fast like P-51/T-Duke/TBM/Epic LT/Lancair IVP...etc. You can comfortably handfly an ILS approach in it and not worry about getting 'behind' the plane, like you might in the P-51. The Katana is a fine choice too, I don't have it...hangar already too full of great planes Judging from the screenshots, it looks to be IFR capable...at the slower groundspeeds you don't need as much equipment. At 90-100kts you have more time to figure out where you are..lol. "The knack of flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Douglas Adams Tejon 'TJ' Stanley
January 8, 201313 yr Can someone please explain the appeal of the Katana? From various testimonies I get the impression that it's more about walk-arounds than flying. Sure, I like a realistic engine modelling just as much as the next guy and really enjoy flying planes that won't happily take any amount of abuse. I'm sure the oil checking might be fun a few times but very soon I fear it will become the same chore that it is in real life and the whole feature will just be turned off which means it's now just a model of a Katana, which is even worse because as far as planes go I have a very hard time thinking of something less exciting under 50'000 kg.
