The Dreaded Jagged Edges - Again!

Featured Replies

I have a new LED 40", HDMI 1080p TV I am using as a second monitor. I run FSX on the this big monitor and use my 22" Samsung 3D monitor for running Plan-G, FSC, and displaying charts etc.

I had a LCD version of the same thing above. I could get a flawless sharp FSX with no jagged lines on this HDTV...mostly showing on aircraft cockpit, along wings etc and runways, building roofs etc.

I have pretty much a "Word Not Allowed Guide" setup. I have my resolution set to the max HD.

I know that anisotropic filtering setting might be a factor but I haven't changed anything when I moved from one monitor type to the other except gone from an LCD to LED monitor.

Does anyone have a solution, or suggestion on how to get rid of the jagged edges? Or is this problem not solvable for an LED monitor?

I have my mip set to 6 in the FSX.cfg, could this be an issue?

You can make changes to your display driver settings on the fly so you can see the results immediately. I run FSX on my large monitor and then pull up NI on my other smaller monitor and make display setting changes and hit Apply. Larger monitors might be a bit harder to tweak but a lot of members are using them and have indicated pleasant experiences.

Best regards,

Jim

Yes I should have mentioned I have NI and am using it. I started messing with my perfect settings as per Koska and others but nothing seems to be happening in my large monitor.

I have my #1 monitor as my smaller 22" and the larger 40" as monitor #2.

Never knew about the mip setting for FSX. Used it in 9 all the time.

Maybe you notice it more cause of the physically larger screen... are you sitting the same distance away?

Yes put this line in your FSX. I haven't tried lowering or increasing to see what this might do to sort the issue out yet.

I have tried a dozen combinations today of changes to the AF and AA, nothing seems to matter. I must be missing something and I just can't figure it out.

MipBias=6 //added for sharpness

My two monitors are exactly the same distance from me, ie very close but the thing is that the previous screen, the LCD version (which is used in my RV so not available to me) was in the same position.

I tried new drivers but with my GTX260 card it causes huge tearing end complete corruption of FSX display to a point that it locks up so had to revert to older drivers that are working for me.

Have you happened to check the line called "Antialiasing Behavior flags" in NI? It should be None. The last time I did a driver upgrade, it changed to something like "treat any overidde settings as revert to application controlled" or something magnificently stupid, and it gave me a little antialising frustration because I knew I hadn't changed anything. Had me shouting ##### at the computer. You might doublecheck to make sure that isn't the problem.

It would be good if you could post one or two screen-shots to see what you are seeing. Forty inch monitor is huge and you will notice any alterations a bit more magnified. May I suggest that you update your graphics card drivers; switch your monitors 1-2 and 2-1 and see if the problem still exists; and finally I would also recommend lowering your graphics resolution a bit, instead of using your screen's native resolution. I have a 42 Sony 1080 HD, and I can see a little bit of edges, but on a smaller monitor it's less noticeable. Also do not sit too close to the monitor- big No, No ! And last , but not least, if you try a different monitor with same size and have no problem, then the problem is with your new LED monitor (also watch the refresh rate).

Interesting. What does adding this mipbias setting to the cfg do exactly?

Good suggestions folks. Just before I pack it in for the evening I deleted the Mipmap=6 tweak and rebooted....and guess what, the jagged edges are gone, except now I have display tearing and stutters which I haven't had in years. Gees, solve one problem and gain another.

I did mention that I tried the most recent drivers and that resulted in exactly what I am seeing now, tearing and stutters....have to pack it in for the night but tomorrow I'll check into the drivers again. And any other recent tweaks I might have done.

So at least I have very smooth textures again.

Thanks for taking the time to provide ideas, most helpful.

it gives you crisper textures, particularly you will notice that your gauges text etc are much sharper.

ARGG!!! The problem is NOT fixed. When I rebooted this morning the jagged lines were back. I have wasted several hours today, messing with computer settings, display settings, Inspector settings, FSX.cfg settings....absolutely nothing to show for it. At times you just want to toss the whole bloody thing in the garbage.

I even went and got to most recent GTX drivers (which are largely for the newer GTX600 series cards) and they seem to be stable for my card at this time. But nothing seems to fix this issue...its ruining my flying experience.

All horizonal and vertical lines are zig zagged.

This happens to me with every upgrade

Bryan, your Antialiasing is not kicking in.. agree with above suggestion.

Bert

I think 1920 at 1050 resolution is also not enough for a 40 inch screen.

With kind regards,
