February 1, 201313 yr I have been doing a lot of research about configuring fsx.cfg but still would like some assistance. For those of you who are running a similar setup as mine. I just built a new PC primarily for FSX. - Intel i7 3770k OC to 4.5Ghz - EVGA NVIDIA GTX 680 FTW (4GB) - 16GB RAM Could someone help me with my settings in fsx.config? I'm hearing a lot of conflicting things, like set framerate to unlimited and others are saying lock it to 30. Use bufferpools, and then I read some articles saying set BP=0. It's throwing me off. If anyone here has the same specs or something very similar to me, would you please share your settings in order to get the most from my hardware. RIght now I have frame rate locked to 30, bufferpools set to 1, vsync set to 1/2 in nvidia inspector. Basically I followed the fsx optimization guide that was posted on avsim's main page. Those are pretty much the settings I'm using. February 1, 201313 yr Hi there captain420, I run an Intel i7 3770K OCd @ 4.4GHZ through the bios setup.... with an Nvidia GTX 670 4GB card, 16 Gigs Ram, Win7 64bit system. I am using BP=0 as it gives me a smoother experience. I have my FSX internal framerate locked at 35 and vsync in inspector set to on, not 1/2. Over all a good experience performance wise for me. As you already know, there are other tweaks in the cfg file that all add up to a better simming experience. If you are using Word Not Allowed's guide, I'm sure they have been applied already. Hope this helps you. Best, Jeff
February 1, 201313 yr Author Jeff, what resolution do you run at? I am using 2560x1600. I am going to attempt the bp=0 and see if that helps me. I am getting around 6-7fps, which I know is awfully slow for my setup. Something is not right with my settings. February 1, 201313 yr I run @ 1920X1080 32bit. Yeah, something doesn't sound right with the FPS your are getting. I am at my office now and have an event to go to later today. I should be in early this evening and will check back. I'll certainly try to help you anyway I can...and I'm sure others will chime in here as there is a lot of 3770K users out there now in the Avsim community. Best, Jeff
February 1, 201313 yr Start again with a new cfg. See what FPS you are getting in a loaded plane and I suggest a payware airport of your choice. You should get at least 20 FPS with that spec. My system is not a patch on yours. For example in the PMDG at EGBB payware, 20%ai I get 20FPS, all sliders maxed apart from water at high. Then add Poolsize=0 under bufferpools section. This should give you another 5 FPS, it did with my system. I also am running 27" 2560x1440 resolution. Srdan explains all this really well in his guide. The only other addition I think helps is Highmemfix =1 under graphics. For what it is worth I did not notice any difference with that 680 card on the ground in extra FPS, only in high resolution clouds, could not justify the price so I returned it. February 1, 201313 yr I've just moved to a 3770 - basically a similar setup to yours except OC'd to 4.9 (de-lidded CPU and custom water cooling). I'm getting high 20's to 30 (locked at 30) while testing in default Washington DC. So you should be doing better. We all have our FSX gurus. I tend to follow Nick Needham (a.k.a NickN) over at Simforums for his depth of hardware knowledge and his common sense approach, which includes a degree of resistance to extreme tweaking. I don't follow him slavishly, but I lean his way. If you haven't already, take a look at his Windows 7 and FSX setup guide, available here, and in this more updated one. He provides a few suggested fsx.cfg tweaks in this thread (read midway down on page 3). Try them and see what your results are. Try others as well. Just make sure to try the adjustments one at a time, so you can see the impact of each one and accept or reject as needed. I also agree with paul123 that the best first move is to rename your fsx.cfg and let FSX build you a new one. Hope this helps. Alan Ampolsk"Ah, Paula, they are firing at me!"-- Saint-Exupery

February 2, 201313 yr Are you on an asus mobo , if you are did you install the asus ai suite software ? , if you did have a look at my post about asus ai suite , I to run a I7 3770k , most sliders in scenery settings on max except water , & vox atc controls my traffic for aircraft , I switched off cars & boats , I get 29.9 to 30 on locked at 30 , all the time on ATI 6970 which is not as good as 680. <p> Paul Sleight

Those are pretty much the settings I'm using. Sounds to me like you are trying to run before you have learnt to walk. Keep it simple! You should be tracking down the obvious issue you have, not complicating the issue with numerous tweaks. Keep the variables to a minmum. Set your monitor to it's native refresh rate. For testing purposes... Delete your FSX cfg. Set FSX setting sensibly. Turn off shadows. Set AI very low. Turn off bloom and other known frame rate killers. Set sliders low, and gradually increase till you achieve reasonable frame rate. Set AA sensibly. Don't fly near frame rate zapping payware airports. I've lost count of the number of times recently, I've seen posts from users wth payware airports and dire frames per second. What's the point, when you end up with a slide show? AllI have is... UTX, GEX and REX. You should see, somewhere like default FSX EGLL, on the runway, with FSX grey and rainy weather scenario, about 26 FPS in the NGX. With BP=0 I see 44. Lock frame rate at a level that generates smooth flight. If that's 30 so be it. Personally, for me, Ivy Bridge is VERY smooth, so I can lock higher with no issues. But then i'm NOT a super complex, frame rate destroying payware airport fan. I see no point if such a thing destroys performance. When you have established that you are getting what you should be, you can experiment with cfg tweaks. Mine are... [bufferPools] PoolSize=0 [Main] FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.15 [JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=14 [GRAPHICS] HIGHMEMFIX=1 [DISPLAY] RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=1.2 RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=1.0 RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=0.9 RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=0.9
February 2, 201313 yr I have the same system. Make sure bloom and ground scenery shadows are off. If you use utx or orbx make sure their night lighting is off. I get about 15 fps at the orbx ksea runway, my traffic at 20% so the airport is really full, opus soupy weather, rex, and sliders totally maxed except autogen 1 notch back and car traffic at 15. And my fps are limited to 30 only in orbx land. If I set them to unlimited I gain about 7 fps, but in orbx my terrain will go blurry on unlimited.
February 2, 201313 yr The biggest problem with Orbx North America is the fact all the scenery is located in the most cloudy region in the country! My framerates drop so much with heavy clouds. Around the SEA area, ugh.
February 2, 201313 yr Also turn off turbo boost in your bios. Don't you mean Hyperthreading? If you are not overclocking, you should leave Turbo Boost on to get the dynamic top speed out of your CPU. Dave
February 3, 201313 yr Yes, turbo boost on. Hyperthreding off. HT off will drop temps by about 10 degrees, and it's not required for FSX. Hence AffinityMask=14 But do consider... You can't change the immutable laws of physics, just as you can't change the immutable laws of FSX. Makes me smile when I see people complaining about performance "issues", as if there's some kind of gremlin at work in their installation of FSX. But then they reveal how they are flying into ultra detailed airports, with ultra demanding aircraft add-ons... but refuse to lower sliders to compensate. No wonder they get 17 frames per second.
February 3, 201313 yr Author Where exactly do I go to turn off hyper threading in my bios? I have an asus p8z77-v motherboard. With ht turned off will it affect my other games and apps?
