Hi Alberto, after a lot of consideration and several emails in the background I conclude you need a better GPU and maybe motherboard too.

Did you start with a fresh fsx.cfg?

  • Commercial Member

No kidding.

well, what I meant to say is that I checked about several others computers and all do the same thing, you can increase the CPU speed but nothing happens to fps.

Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com

Don't get too hung up on FPS. I'm less concerned with my FPS as I am with smooth rendering. I'll take 15 FPS and smooth over 30 FPS and stuttering.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Did you start with a fresh fsx.cfg?

I'll add to that. Did you tweak your fsx.cfg? When I tweaked it, I went from 10 fps in JFK to 25 fps.

Beware, you can only get more fps if you lose something else!

Put your cfg through a tweaker and lose shadows, autogen, who knows what. I suggest stans got it spot on.

I have my old rig with me an all the time i keep wondering why do my old fsx rig which is MSI 760GM-E51 motherboard, 8GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, 1 GB AMD RADEON HD 6850 GPU, why is it so stable with fsx than my computer listed in my spec's . I notice a few changes i made to my old rig that i never made for my new rig. This is what i have done to get smooth in the USA Area at 15 FPS smooth no stutter but also FPS limited to 30 .

1 To Disable UAC:

Head into Control Panel and type UAC into the search box, or do it from the start menu. Then drag the slider down to the bottom.- In the resulting window, move the slider all the way to the bottom.

REBOOT.. you MUST REBOOT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE

2 Automatic Updates from MS can SLOW your system. You should MANUALLY check for Automatic updates

Control Panel > Windows Update

In the left pane double-click Change settings.

To disable Automatic Updates choose Never check for updates

3 Start your driver install.. Chipset drivers FIRST, reboot, install the rest of your drivers and reboot as they tell you, leave the video driver for last

NOTE: VIDEO DRIVERS

If you are experienced with FSX you know video drivers can be HIT and MISS even on identical hardware.

UPDATE: USE DRIVERS 257.21 or above with Nvidia Inspector

4 Turn Off System Restore

This will also clear the disk of the locked area used by system restore. The is needed to properly defrag the hard drive. If you want system restore enabled, do it LATER after all the defrag work is completed. I suggest you leave System Restore DISABLED for better performance.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Press the Windows + Pause Break keys > in the left pane click on Advanced system settings.

In the resulting window, switch to the System Protection pane.

Select all the drives, click the Configure button

A pop-up will happen asking "Are you sure..." click Turn System Restore Off, the click Apply.

5. Disable Automatic Disk Defrag

Press the Windows + R keys > type dfrgui.exe (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter).

Click Configure Schedule button > Uncheck Run on schedule. Hit the Windows + R keys > type sysdm.cpl > click the Advanced tab > in the Performance section click the Settings button.

Uncheck all boxes except the 4 in the picture below

NOTE: I highly suggest for performance a AERO Theme not be used and instead use a BASIC HIGH CONTRAST Windows theme and change the background desktop image. I use the theme WINDOWS 7 BASIC and edit the background. The tab below will appear DIFFERENT when a non-AERO theme is in use.. make the same selections but the AERO options will not be available.

6. To Disable Hibernate Permanently (resource hog)

Press the Windows + R keys > type cmd > type powercfg.exe /hibernate off

Power Profile - Important for now, can be set different later

Press the Windows + R keys > type powercfg.cpl (this is Control Panel/Power Options)

Choose the High performance plan > Change plan settings > turn all options to OFF or Never. (note - You may have to manually type in Never)

NOTE: You can add in a SCREENSAVER AFTER optimizing and defrag is complete! Dont set that now!

7 Set the Folder options...

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. Open Folder Options in the Control Panel.
  3. Select the View tab in the Folder Options window.

Now, go down the list and make the following changes

UNCHECK: Always show Icons, never thumbnails (this is your choice, I prefer it)

CHECK: Display file icon on thumbnail (optional, I prefer it)

CHECK: Always show menus (easier access in folders)

UNCHECK: Display file size information in folder tips

Bullet in: Show hidden files and folders

UNCHECK: Hide Protected Operating system files

UNCHECK: Hide extensions for known file types

UNCHECK: Hide empty drives in Computer folder

UNCHECK: Restore previous folder windows at logon

CHECK: Show drive letters (optional)

UNCHECK: Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color

UNCHECK: Show popup description for folder and desktop items

UNCHECK: Show preview handlers in preview pane (optional)

8. DISABLE WINDOWS DEFENDER AND KILL iT PLEASE!

Uninstall it. Press the Windows + R keys and type appwiz.cpl > Turn Windows Features on or off > uncheck Windows Defender, click OK.

NOTE: Professional AV software with small footprint,, NOD32 but DO MAKE SURE YOU DISABLE THEIR FEATURE FOR WINDOWS UPDATE CHECKS, ITS NOT NEEDED AND WILL STUTTER A SYSTEM

See NOD32 support for details..

My old rig is overclock Processor AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor, 3900 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) It runs very smooth no sutter at all . I am currently using these step for my FSX rig right now if the old one handles it well why wouldn't this one do the same.

Those steps i posted are the one i fallowed from Nicks guide it is very long , i just posted the onces that i fallowed to get fsx running smoothly .

IF you want to fallow up more on Nick's guide for fsx here is the link - http://www.simforums.com/forums/topic34141_post198077.html#198077

Also one importante step i fallow on my own is before i run fsx i open up the task manager Alt + Ctl +Delete an make sure no other software is running updates in the background. I click en "End Process" for programs such as Adobe updates, itunes, MSI LIVE UPDATE an any other progam you may not need to run in the background while running fsx. Those programs can cause stutter in the background while you are running fsx no matter how good your GPU or CPU is at.

I hope this helps you let me know the result .

I have NEVER disabled system restore in many years of having a PC, And trust me, it's a lot of years. I've lost count of the number of times system restore has saved my bacon. It's a VERY useful feature.

Quite a lot of what you suggest above I would disagree with. And yet...

I run at 50 frames per second, and very, very, very rarely see any stutters at all.

Just enjoyed an awesome flight in the Realair Duke... Rarely at any time during the flight did frame rate drop below 40. That's with UTX, GEX, and REX.

GTX 580

8 GB DDR3.

The secret to great performance is simple, and actually it's not a secret at all. Fast CPU, fast GPU, decent RAM... and reject the hyper detailed payware add-on fetish, and the illogical desire for high slider settings.

BP=0 is highly advised too, if you have a compatible card.

If I ever got less than 25-30 FPS, I would be very, very disappointed and play BF3 instead.

Astonishes me how many simmers are delighted if they get 15 frames per second, because it's "smooth". 15 frames per second, is 15 frames per second, and stutter free or not, 15 frames per second is garbage.

Use common sense with any "tweaks" suggested, Don't take anyone's advice on face value. Think for yourself. Test it, if it works, great. If it doesn't, reject it. And that applies if it's a super dooper auto tweak web site, or advice from a so called FSX guru... or anyone posting in this thread, including me.

That is not true when you run 15 FPS in VC like the NGX it is smooth outside the VC is a different story. Most people think having high FPS is smooth it depends how you like to look at it , but i find very different when FPS is limited. When i first started FSX i tend to get above 60FPS on Default Aircraft even hit 100 once but i still got stutter times to times. When i fallow up on important guide like Word Not Allowed's an Nick both said limiting FPS would get smoother flight very true also it gives less stress to the graphic card if am not mistaken . Keep in mind not every system reacts the same way as other. We don't know how many app the OP is running in the background , i have seen simmers have tones of app running at the same time when running fsx. When i run fsx i don't even look at my FPS if my flight is smooth an texture are loading with out any errors i don't have no need to look at what my FPS are.

Here are two questions I wonder if anyone can answer with certainty.

1. Does FSX screen resolution effect/change the frame rate?

2. Does FSX screen resolution effect/change the amount of memory FSX uses?

Thanks.

My friend...

15 frames per second is NOT smooth to the human eye!

Not unless you have the capability to bypass millions of years of evolution, and reconfigure the neurological connections in the human brain to make it so.

In cinematography 25 FPS is smooth due to the blurring nature of the medium.

In computer games it's higher than that. More like 30 to 35. Dependent on the individuals sensitivity to a degree.

I say again, regardless of not getting stutters, 15 FPS can not be smooth. IT's biologically impossible. Optically and neurologically, The human eye doesn't work like that.

Of course, if the VC isn't moving, not being panned around, you obviously won't notice. Pan it, and have fun with the slide show.

I don't get stutters' but I would most definitely perceive 15 FPS. And perceive the difference at 35 FPS.

Fixed 14 seems rock solid on my system and works fine for FSX, but it's obviously no good for first person shooters, maybe if I look out a side window the scenery is just visibly stepping. 18-19 fps is where the human eye finds it hard to spot updates.

Thank you that is exactly my point am trying to point out to martin. 15 FPS is not garbage as he said am not saying my system stays at 15 but when it drops from 30 to 15 on orbx scenery i don't even notice it an i am running track ir with airbus extended an in the NGX . On ground i have 15 to 25 FPS once i takeoff FPS goes to 26 to 30 an stays 28 an 30 steady while i climb to higher altitude. The level of smoothness is breath taking to me . Maybe i will record a video with out No Editing programs so you can have a look.

No tweak affects fps more than the "buffer pool" one. Unless you have this one figured out, cpu upgrade wont help much. I run an i5-2500k at 4.5 and a 460 gtx. Without the buffer pool line, my fps are in the low teens. With the buffer pool line, my fps are always above 20 fps--with all sliders to the right, including AI, autogen, REX. A lot has been said about this tweak, so look it up and you'll see your frame rates jump up.
