You seem to want to take the "serious" (whatever that means to you) out of flight simulation in order to attract a larger audience. As I've said before, I don't think most mass audiences want reality in current games, they want uber reality.

 

For the first part: Nope, that seems to be your interpretation. For me its not a binary situation where the only choice is to be fully one thing or another. That sets up two camps that are natural opposites like oil and water; which to me seems to be more your argument than mine.

 

You can contend that no mass market for flight simulation exists, and its certainly a point of view that I have heard before, but what actually supports that contention? Is it something with an empirical basis? Or does it simply justify the status quo?

 

There is a simple way to find out: conduct the experiment! Reach out to the masses. But then that means that things might have to change a bit, wouldn't it? We might have to meet them half-way and that might mean a retreat from the bastions of ultimate "realism"

I think you're making an awful lot of a guy who's simply found a nice niche doing send-ups of games.

 

Don't we have our own nice little niche that we seem to think a lot of? The difference is that his comes with a bully pulpit that speaks to millions. Would that we could still speak to a market that large anymore. Maybe then there would actually be money to develop the things we say we want, and we wouldn't be bolting things onto a 7 year old sim.......

 

But your medicine is someone else's rare treat. Anyway, I've never been much of a sugar guy myself. I'll always pass up desert for a really good main course.

 

I am just afraid that main course will eventually become a least meal for the hobby. How many civilian sims are there again? How many on the horizon? Is Xplane growing? Or is it cannibalizing FSX?

Serious is just one version of several phrases used commonly like technical, hardcore, or.... serious. In some cases I Think it also denotes a state of mind.

And I don't know why it seems so black and white to you. All audiences are subject to being appealed to, or advertising wouldn't exist. Presentation is also important, and even more effective if compromise is on the table.

As was mentioned earlier in this thread.....I downloaded that Farm Simulator Sunday Afternoon around 3:30 pm.....All I can say is that thing is really addictive. I was up until 4 am playing my farm. :huh:

For a simple concept, it gets you in.

I was excited because I'm actually a fan of London Underground Simulator. I don't know how this thread turned into an argument but I'm glad civility prevailed. Woul've been funny to see a "This topic is under survaillance" or whatever those say, though.

 

I'll admit I'm a simulator addict. I love flight sims, train sims, subway sims. racing sims I've even tried bus simulator and i'm sure there are more geeky ones i'm into....but I haven't convinced myself of getting Farm Simulator 2. It definitely does seem like it's popular. Euro Truck Simulator I got tired of....though I need to try it again using a wheel.

Argh! I was taking a well-deserved break from my FSX labors late yesterday afternoon driving Euro Truck 2 in "Demo" mode...

 

...when suddenly after my seventh successful delivery, a popup rudely informed me that my "Demo Trial" had expired...

 

...whereupon in a moment of weakness I whipped out my Visa card and bought the durn thing! I made another ten deliveries, got myself in hock to the "Bank" for 100k Euros so I could by a basic IVECO rig, and...

 

...so it went until I realized that I'd played it all the way through new episodes of both "NCIS" and "NCIS Los Angeles" -and- missed taking my evening meds and dinner. Sheesh! Talk about addicting!!! :LMAO:
