Who started the release w/o a quality check trend in payware?

Featured Replies

I am curious because, I just bought a brand new airplane for FSX and although tons of work has gone into making it with it's high quality textures, sounds and features, it has a lot of bugs that seem glaring to me.  When some piece of software is released, it is practically unheard of that there wont be a service pack due to bugs but, those bugs are things that crop up due to different system configurations, or unanticipated things.  Unfortunately, I am finding things that are obvious and that stand out as if the maker just lost patience or some other reason.  For example, parts of the graphics in the gauges are upside down.  Problem is, surely these things could be fixed easily but sadly they most likely never will and should not have escaped the quality control stage.

If I had to point a finger it'd be a particular 757 that came in separate parts. So when the first person laid there hard earned money down for that there was no looking back.

Unfortuatley as consumers we're as stupid as the day is long.

We can be told by numerous posts or forum discussions that it's not worth it, but someone always pays.

So they keep sending out the same crap. (Cause they just did it again)

Just once I'd like to see a developer get what he deserves for selling overpriced junk.

I feel the same is true, not just for aircraft add-ons, but software as well. On a daily basis, I'm finding it more and more common that software developers have no problem releasing unfinished/buggy software. I can think of more applications that have some significant issues than those that don't. Skype comes to mind...its been around for years, yet it still has some very clear and annoying issues that are made clear every day.

I've bought a number of aircraft add-ons over the years. Some I have loved and have almost no bugs...others have been just plain bad.

Exactly. These threads never do anyone a lick of good. I, likewise, am tired of them.

Flightsimming has turned from enthusiats, pursuing their hobby, sharing findings and developments with others, into a very commercial and competitve market. It's about making money just like in any other industry around.

Problem is, there isn't much money unless you are a top quality developer, even PMDG admitted they lost a lot of money on their MD-11 release. With a bad economy, I don't see things are any better.

If you were one of those true hard-working developers,

- taking your time,

- testing,

- debugging and completing your planes,

while watching the other camp doing just the opposite, rushing buggy, incomplete products to the market.

Now, furthermore, realizing that you're

-  running out of time and

-  running out of money,

what were you supposed to do NOW???

(Have no clue myself.)

With that bad economy I don't see myself endlessly spending money on a variety of addons, not caring whether I loose 40 Euros here and 60 Euros there, either.

So, with money tight for everyone, consumers and producers alike, where does that lead us to?!?

Developers are screwed - Take too long to release people get upset.

Release without proper quality control, people also get upset.

Nature of the beast when you are providing a service or product. If a developer can't deal with that, then look for another line of work or source of income.

it seems like its becoming a trend and i DO NOT and WILL NOT support...

I think this trend is about to be stopped dead in it's tracks with a number of high-fidelity addons that are expected this year.

An issue is the announcement of multiple similar addons. Each attempts to be the first on the market, hoping to grab as many of the customers before the competition comes out. Sometimes, the release date can be pushed forrward in order for said product to be out before the competition, regardless of the state of the software released.

I won't name any products, as I am sure all of you know the products I relate to... It is a problem in many sectors, but particularly dominant in the aircraft addon sector...

Pre-order, releasing unfinished versions, releasing modules of addons... all classic attempts to improve cashflow...

I prefer to wait now until the product is out. There are always going to be those that purchase within seconds of release. I will only do that with a small handful of developers, who have earned a huge amount of kudos and respect over the years.

It's probably a question of resources, and time.

I've seen plenty of sloppy software mistakes over the years, and plenty of seemingly simple issues that prove to be absolute bears to deal with. Unless you've done the actual development, it's hard to know which is which.

What bothers me is when there are little, simple fixes that can be made and, whether out of depression, carelessness or hostility, the developer just never gets around to it.

I realize that many of these companies are just a few people. Some of them may be outsourcing work, they paid for results, the issues require the outsourced artist or whatever to fix, and then it's a fight between developer and outsourcer as to who's going to spend the time negotiating, paying or not paying..... all sorts of fun there.

Having no spare money or time to cope with such problems in an environment where basic living is so ridiculously expensive can't help.

It's frustrating, in any event, and bottom line is, if you don't do good, careful work, it'll show forever.
