October 24, 201411 yr My reasoning is frame rates and ooms. I use payware twins like the Twin Otter and BN-2 Islander, as well as various Carenado planes and the A2A Cherokee and 172, but I like my traffic at high levels as a trainee pilot would experience it, so I do fly some default models to keep ooms and fps crashes at bay. - Paul Elliott http://www.avsim.com/topic/450607-amy-johnson-london-to-australia-attempt/
October 24, 201411 yr I really like the default 172, and the A-321 isn't bad. Additionally, I fly the 737 with optional liveries. I really don't think the default aircraft are all that bad. Stan
October 25, 201411 yr I fly default on occasion in both FS9 and FSX. Love the Ford Trimotor, Cessnas, Maule, DC3s, and the FSX jetliners are just fine. For me, FS9 and FSX are aviation simulators. I get to play airline pilot, cargo pilot, bush pilot, and with FS9 Golden Wings/Cal Classics, I fly in the 1930s/40s era. The default planes definitely have their place in my FS universe.
October 31, 201411 yr Now I have my own homebuild cockpit set-up (GA), I'm even switching back from the Carenado Caravan to the default Caravan, I am not convinced by Carenado's flight dynamics that don't seem to have the speed needed, and incredible power on the ground. I see others on forums have the same ideas. Using my 2D view I don't need to look at the VC - so the flight characteristics are paramount! - Paul Elliott http://www.avsim.com/topic/450607-amy-johnson-london-to-australia-attempt/
October 31, 201411 yr The default DC-3? Not the worst virtual cockpit in the world, Amen to this. Everything seems wrong in the VC. I will defend the default Maule, Beaver, and Goose as pretty darn good but not RealAir or A2A quality.
November 1, 201411 yr One of the issues with the DC-3 is that every company that ordered DC-3's had switches, radios, and instruments placed in different places. This makes for a difficult situation when modeling the DC-3, namely, where do you position the switches and instruments. MS actually got a lot wrong with their DC-3 and I highly recommend Manfred Jahn's C-47 as a freeware replacement. Version 1 still uses the MS DC-3 VC, but Manfred did give it a better eye viewpoint, a nose cone, and full left and right wings with engines and props when looking through the windows of the VC. His Version 2 C-47 uses the very modern cockpit from his Basler BT-67. My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Some of the the folks over at SOH were working on an updated 'vintage' VC for Manfred's C-47v2, but lost a couple of the key Gauge programmers. Others have gone a different direction, and have done some mods to the default VC which seem to work OK... http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?84263-Attention-all Note: The link starts at the most recent posts; you will have to page through to find the start of the VC discussion.
November 1, 201411 yr Every day a new poster bumps a year old or more topic. I don't get it. Some people have the same questions, why repeat the same thread? - Paul Elliott http://www.avsim.com/topic/450607-amy-johnson-london-to-australia-attempt/
