Q400 frames Vs NGX

Featured Replies

Make sure you have affinity mask in your fsx.cfg file the q400 runs on the cpu core not used by FSX.

Where is this documented?

I dont have AM in my FSX.cfg and I dont intend to.

Why can I not just tell the Q400 which core I want it to run on instead?

Hi Rockliffe and everyone else,

I'd like to say I agree with your original post, I bought the Dash 8 the other day and while it works fine and is very impressive I didn't notice a huge improvement in fps like others are saying they are seeing, which like yourself was one of the things I was most interested to experience, what with most of the processing done outside of FSX I think this idea might go far.

I'm just wondering if the Dash 8 while working outside FSX is sharing processing power with other add-ons like REX which I think also works outside FSX, and that's why I don't see increased fps?

Anyway, I'll use this one a lot, everything works in the cockpit which is a plus for me, and as it should too! fps while great are not everything, and if it runs smoothly on my set up and works with everything else then fine.

Happy flying,

Happy Flying,

Dave Phillips.

To make a save C&D you load the aircraft and switch everything off. Save the flight.

Exit fsx all together.

Restart fsx and load the saved flight, if you still get the warm state, reload flight. There is sort of a nak to it. But I now have a C&D load.

Btw, the fps is no new toy talk the fps are far better for me fact, no bs.

My initial impression is that I have not noticed any major improvement between the two. It is also fair to say that I've not flown the plane significantly or bothered to do any real testing under all types of conditions. Impression so far is I like the plane but have a learning curve to overcome before I would know for sure.

Hi Dave, thanks for that. Since I posted the request I have found info elsewhere that says there is not a default C&D state. I wish there was some proper information with this bird. While I've got you here, perhaps I could ask if you have managed to calibrate your Hog to the throttle? I'm having a bit of a problem...

Why do you not want affinity mask in fsx? That makes no sense to me. It's one of the most important tweaks for stable smooth simming.

With the Q400 I see not really much higher framerates but very very smooth flying in all situations. while the NGX noticeably slows down a lot.

The downside to this better frame performance is the fact that the Q400 doesn't interact with FSX much at all. No turbulence effects from addons like Active Sky, does not even model radio tuning with the default atc window, and the big negative is AES and GSX do not work at all with the Q400.

Could not disagree more.

Maybe for some it works but on my setup it makes zero difference and robs FSX of a terrain loading thread.

If it works for you in some way then great, but to say its one of the most important tweaks is nonsense.

Since I posted the request I have found info elsewhere that says there is not a default C&D state.

I read from one of the devs that this was intentional as generally only one time a day is the a/c found in a cold and dark state and that's for the first flight.

I've simply created a couple of c&d saves at different airports that I've so far flown to.

It robs the sim of absolutely nothing, leaving it at default robs the sim. It seems like you were just using the wrong number for your setup.

I believe that works fine only because Opus doesn't actually shake the airplane itself, just your camera view.

Yes Howard, it was the first job I did.

It's very easy, just move the throttle to where it looks right and enter the value given to the proper box.

The only thing to note is I cannot get the perfect off throttle. My 0 reading is 382, but that put the Q400 a bit into beta, just a bit.

When you load the aircraft you have to move throttle forward and back and you will see it then stops in the right place.

Hi Dave, mmm, I thought that's what I was doing. I just don't seem to be able to get the full throttle position. I find the max position on the Hog, read off the input value from the control panel and enter that value into the appropriate box, hit apply, reload the aircraft, but as I say, it doesn't seem to work. When I push the throttle forward, it gets about an inch on the Hog but in the plane it is is on maximum!

I'm another that has identical FPS.  I would say, for the most part, we can chalk it up as new product fervor.  My FPS are excellent in both.

No offence, but how can write off so many other users' views as "new product fever" ?

Why would people artificially state very positive FPS performance, if they weren't seeing it.

On my end (i7 2600k, 16GGB DDR3, HD 7850 2GB Win 7 64bit), the difference in FPS performance between the NGX and the Q400 is dramatic.

Here's a quick and dirty comparison :-

UK2000 EGCC, Opus Weather, Medium to high FSX settings, low AI settings, FSX FPS Unlocked (just for the test):-

NGX:   averages 24 FPS

Q400: averages 38 FPS

No 'new product fever', just how it is.

I accept that not everyone is seeing the difference, but equally, others should accept that some are.

This is turning out to be a very interesting thread. At first I thought that the diffeences may be between ATI and Intel chips, but the evidence proves otherwise. I'm going to do some more testing later.

I have noticed I stay at 30 more often with this.

I would say she is lighter on frames, but I also heard that is because it doesn't have 2d panels to load and run also. I don't know.

Anyone know of a way to take the 2d panels out of the NGX and then do a comparison?
