Hi,

 

I will soon be overclocking my i7 2600K to 4.5GHz and I was wondering what kind of performance I can expect on FSX with addons such as the PMDG NGX etc.

 

Nvidia GTX 570

2x (4GB) G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 RAM.

i7 2600k @3.4GHz (Soon to be 4.5).

Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo

ASUS P8Z68-V Pro.

About 30% higher FPS all around.  FSX performance scales nearly linearly with CPU clockspeed in most situations.  If you decide to use extremely high settings and apply additional AA you could shift the performance bottleneck to the GPU, however.

I've been running the 2600k stable at 4.5ghz (more or less) on air for the last 2 years now and the fps is really enjoyable in the NGX, with addon scenery and weather etc... But I've tweaked my fsx.cfg a lot, its just about experimenting and finding the right settings for your computer.

It can get a bit sluggish sometimes but overall I find it playable (+30 fps)

Short answer - the slightly better overclocker, and you eliminate posibility to get "bad chip"(lower OC capability)

 

I'd like to add, it was "at least 100MHz" in my case. I was able to go for 5GHz on air with 2700k. However, i like to add some more Vcore for better(full)stability, and i run it now at 4.8Ghz with 1.4vcore(it's stable at 1.38)since September 2012 without problems. I'll go soon for 4.9, need some free time for this

I like that, I am still holding for Haswell to decide about my new "FSX-only"-rig.

 

As I see it, the 2700K is more of a pure FSX processor than the 3770K because of heat when OC'd, allthough people are devided about this too.

If you de-lid a 3770k (or 3570k) the temps can be dealt with. Out of the 4 chips I've personally de-lidded, temperature drops of up to 32 degrees C have been measured. My chip only gets into the 40's and 50's in FSX. I do water cool though.

According to FSXMark 11 results, Ivy Bridge is about 10% faster than Sandy Bridge at the same clock speed.  Not huge, but every little bit helps.

Is that CPU voltage safe?  Even if you keep the heat in check, I suspect you are shortening your CPU's lifespan considerably.
