Thinking about flying on VATSIM

Featured Replies

so I tried squawkbox and found that to be much easier to install and easier to use

If I may ask, you don't experience problems with SB4 crashing for you and taking FSX with it or do you perhaps run SB4 from another computer?

Personally I stick with FS9 for my VATSIM adventures because FSX simply isn't stable enough for me, especially when running sb4. However when PMDG 777 is released, well....

If you run SqwakBox from outside the sim you will not encounter any crash or error + extra FPS for your FSX!!

I have to say that offline flying is now for learning a new aircraft and also where I use VOXATC to practice my interaction with ATC etc

VATSIM is where I want to do my 'real' flying but you do have to up your game to do that which makes 'simming more rewarding.

I have a two computer set up with SB4 running on a laptop by the side, means I can see the text alongside my Aivlasoft EFB / G Plan, works well to have them both in view and not on my main FSX computer.

I'm confused as how to do this with a single monitor setup, when you launch SB from inside FSX, it becomes "part of" FSX, ie. FSX runs full screen and you can click on SB without minimising FSX. Whereas, launching externally, it runs as a separate program, and I have to change between the two. Is there a way to get around this?

Also when starting FSX, do you have to run the 3 SB dll modules if you're launching SB externally?

You don't launch SB from FSX, make a shortcut icon on desktop from SB installer and after launching FSX you start SB, make sure you delete SBTRANS.DLL from your FSX module folder, it will help you with your FPS.

SBTRANS.DLL is the transponder module that appears in FSX and it allows you to switch to mode charlie!

You don't launch SB from FSX......

I think you misunderstood or misread my previous post. Also if you delete the sbtrans.dll, how will you switch transponder modes?

AAA! I read it again, sorry!!! If you have one monitor then your SB will be in background and everytime ATC calls you you have to bring the SB in front of FSX. I fly full screen on takeoff and landing, on cruise I fly windowed, so if ATC calls I'm able to see.

If you delete sbtrans.dll you can switch charlie, ident and standby from options bar in SB, if you fly PMDG the plane will do this for you when you switch specific modes in transponder!

Ok, no probs, thanks for the response. I think switching between SB and FSX will be too annoying, so, I'll continue to run internally.

Switching between SB and FSX if you run in full screen mode definitely is a PITA and I really dislike using windowed mode. In FS9 I launch SB4 internally and it works perfectly, however in FSX I haven't been able to complete one single flight on VATSIM without the sim crashing... Therefore I really need to set up SB4 on a networked PC!

Krister, I would like to run SB4 on network, I have a laptop as a second PC, is there a simple way to install SB on it and run it from there? Are you willing to explain how, I've tried in the past but with no success.

Albert, sorry but since I've been a very content FS9+SB4 user, I haven't felt the need to try a solution for FSX. However, I did find this package from avsim http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=151797&Cookie=1 It has an excellent tutorial but I haven't had the time to give it a go yet!

Just give a chance to FSInn, it has minimalistic UI

Joined up and have a done a few flights, but 90% of time on 122.8 as the coverage just wasn't there.

Hoping to get a P1 rating at some point but I guess you have to be mentored first?

Cool bits:

When there's coverage it's great being controlled by a real person (I was cr@pping myself the first time).

It's also great seeing real people flying their planes around, and knowing they can see you.

Not so cool bits:

"Artificial" ATC like ProATC/X is way better than sitting on Unicom for 2 hours when there's no coverage.

Potential domestic strife - you can't pause the flight if need be or if summoned by better half (sorry honey I can't help with lunch, I'm online...)

:)

Is it really that nerve wracking talking online for the first time? I mean i play xbox online and talk to strangers on there, i've used military radio before etc.
