Thinking about flying on VATSIM

FSInn loves to crash. Fortunately a new client is in the works.

There isn't anything wrong with FSINN, it doesn't crash if it and other software is installed correctly.

FSINN is the PRIMARY and best pilot client for VATSIM.

The upgrade is for other reasons, but it is in the works.

To qualify my statements: I've done online, remote desktop support for FSX and FSINN for over 4 years, helping well over 50 people tune their systems for VATSM Shared Cockpit. In that time, I've only known two people to have problems with FSINN, both times it was their system, not FSINN.

Have a nice VATSIM day!

Ya generally focused on tube liners ... They staff the big airports.

You should try Pilot Edge.

Have to agree. Pilotedge is a good icebreaker for online ATC control. On non peak times they will also provide personal help on procedures.

Sorry, I have to respectfully disgree.

VATSIM doesn't focus on either type. It's what the pilots decide to fly. VATSIM controllers are trained and plenty capable of handling VFR traffic including flight following and the pilot transitioning to an uncontrolled field.

Also, with real world VFR flying, flown from uncontrolled fields that aren't in Class B airspace, there are many flights when you don't ever speak to ATC.  So, flying on VATSIM in such a manner actually is very realisitc!

That said, there has been a lot of general aviation and VFR traffic on VATSIM. I was outside of Class B airspace yesterday with Center online, and he never contracted me - the right thing for him to have done.

Most every person experienced on VATSIM will tell you that they wished they started flying on the network sooner.  A free network which doesn't attempt to offset costs of running the network, all the donated time towards helping other people, and the friends I've made, even the ones I don't fly with anymore, I'm thankful the founders (some of who made a flight together the other day) created the network, and too all the others who wrote clients like FSINN.

So you're saying PilotEdge controllers are not helpful and that it's not an easy way to break the ice given the guaranteed availability of controllers? I have used the service in the past and they were patient, helpful, and I would recommend them to any one who enjoys West Coast US flights. Heavy or GA. Xplane, FSX, or FS9.

Probably, as I mentioned above because of the sweetfx modifying the direct3d files, or the 3000+ aircraft paints that get loaded everytime I start fsinn, or the NGX and the heavy airports I fly into.

I get random fscopilot.dll crashes...and system definitely locks up when I try and start fsinn in KSEA.

I didn't say a word about PilotEdge.

This might be a silly question, but if you decide to park yourself on a random parking space at a VATSIM manned airport, how do you know if another aircraft is already there?

Eugene

You dont. You disable crashes and log on. If there is already a plane there you log off and choose a different parking spot

Actually, that's an EXCELLENT question.

No doubt about it, that does happen from time to time.

The only way to prevent it is to first log in as an Observer, then if the spot is free you log out and log back in without being an Observer.  But most people don't bother with this unless there is a large event (even then they/we don't).

I always go external about 30 seconds after logging on to make sure that I haven't logged in over someone.  If someone logs in over me, I give them a minute or two to notice before texting them and asking them to move. Never had a problem. Everyone accepts it will happen now and again.

Barring the rare GameSpy user (somone on VATSIM only because GameSpy shut down), all the pilots on VATSIM seem to work together extremely well when ATC isn't covering an area. IN FACT.... some of the best flights I've had were online without ATC, talking/texting to coordinate with pilots. Met five guys who became wonderful friends that way.  We see each other all over and always give a shout out.

EXCELLENT QUESTION.

Thanks guys, wondered about the parking spot issue for a while!

Eugene

FSInn is probably crashing on me because I use sweetfx to tweak my graphical settings. Oh well, something I just have to live with because fsx looks dull without it.

Ftx global will be another alternative for global scenery/textures, launching next month.

I am curently using FSInn with full SweetFX running and never had any issues. This is running in single PC or networked client. In fact one doesn't have any influence on the other.

Suggest you check and remove remove any enb files (if any) the remove and reintall FSCopilot and FSInn is that order. FSInn when it crashes usually gives you an error description, perhaps

you could post yours and we can assist you to fix the issue.

I use Aivlasoft EFB. It displays ground traffic before I log on to Vatsim.

Good idea, haven't used my Aviosoft EFB for a while, didn't realise it could do that. Thanks.

Eugene

At my PC FSInn can crash sometimes, but always at FSInn loading, so even if it crash, it's not a big deal just restart a flight. However, when it's loaded and running, FSInn never crashed.

For parking position, I just go to top-down view and check if I took occupied stand. If that's a situation, I just use slew to reposition myself.

Go for it, VATSIM is great fun.

I use FSInn and used to use Squawkbox. Both work fine. FSInn is a bit more complex to use but lets you fine tune more settings and has a few more features. Squawkbox is very easy to use but is a bit simplified.

That parking issue is a non-issue really, as long as you've turned off aircraft collisions like Vatsim recommends, you can connect at your gate/parking spot, and if another aircraft appears on top of you simply disconnect, slew to the closest available spot and reconnect.
