Opinions on ORBX PNW?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking at getting ORBX's PNW region for bush flying and test flying the PMDG 777 out of KPAE. What does everyone think PNW is like for these purposes? I currently have most AU packages and I love them. Also, how are the FPS?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks,

Kevin L

If you like AU, you are going to like PNW even better (upgraded airports with buildings, people, traffics, more features etc being a later release). The only caveats I would add is some people complain about the FPS (runs fine on mine though) and that GA flying seems to make more sense with Orbx!

Sounds great! Thanks for the quick reply.

I second what Fox-Bat said. It's simply awesome, although you most likely won't get as much satisfaction from flying airliners around there than from bush flying.

Be aware that performance in and around Seattle may be worse than what you'd get elsewhere, but I found that it's still an improvement over default Seattle.

If you are ONLY interested in flying jetliners, then ORBX scenery in general is not that suitable. ORBX is primarily a scenery package, which implies that you want too see nice renditions of local scenery. That being said, I like the challenge, for example of landing and taking off from Bowerman with a lightly loaded PMDG 747. Your computer specs will determine what kind of performance you will get. I get enjoyment from flying many different types of aircraft, so I like the variety and experience of ORBX scenery.

I have battled with OOMs NGX and KSEA on final after a long flight (MD11 was fine though). I have most of the payware airports in the area, which wouldn't help. This isn't to say you'd have issues, but you will be running closer to the wire with the T7 than a C172. GA heaven though... It definitely runs better than AU.

Simmo is right.

It's really GA land.  As said before, kind of a waste to get it and then fly at 20000 ft agl, not 2000 ft agl.  Beautiful stuff and the remote mountain airports are ultra fun.  The little payware airports are works of art.

Check out Greenbrier Aero Club, the VA for and about the GA pilot.

It would be a waste to get it just to fly the T7. If you're gonna do low level hops around PNW in the T7 it might be worth it. However I can't think of many runways that can accommodate the T7.

SEA

OLM

PDX

PAE

Maybe HQM if really lightly loaded

Maybe CLM ^

OP said also for bush.

I did couple BAV delivery flights out of Snohomish County... and it was quite nice having PNW.  Mountains look great.  Seems you will be going in and out of Paine - so that will be nice.

And since you are planning on using for bush flying... hours upon hours of fun there.

Probably will take an fps hit... I did when running the PMDG 748 out of Paine... I really didn't care... the scenery was so nice.

+1

If you enjoy GA flying, I heavily recommend PNW.   If you are solely looking to do airliner flights, I wouldn't recommend it, as in my experience, combining complex heavies like the NGX with Orbx scenery, does result in quite a drop on FPS, and some stutters.

Thanks, everyone!! To clarify about the 777, I meant that I just wanted the improved KPAE to have a realistic Boeing base. Of course, the major factor for me in this scenery is GA flying. I haven't really got GA-suitable scenery yet (apart from a couple of short hops around Australia). So I should be getting PNW soon.

Thanks again.

It's really only the area immediately around Seattle and to a lesser extent Portland that suffers from poor performance. You've still got tons of beautiful scenery to explore. The FPS in the mountains and around the smaller towns is great even on slower systems. KPAE lies within the Bermuda Triangle of Frame Rate, though.

I agree with Jimmi ..... most areas don't have problems with performance, but if it is specifically KPAE that you are after, then I am afraid it is almost in the heart of the area where frame rates come crashing done, due to the huge metropolitan area around Seattle.

I think the framerate issues are related to the amount of autogen in those areas. Both trees as well as custom autogen objects. Just cut down on the scenery complexity slider and it should be good.

At any rate, PNW has been worth every penny to me. Big upgrade over GEX NA for that particular region.
