July 22, 201312 yr A Southwest 737 reported landing gear problems, before landing at LaGuardia, and upon touchdown the nose landing gear collapsed. My question is why on Earth if they knew they had a problem would they go into KLGA, when JFK with it's 14000ft runway is just a few miles South? Luckily the plane didn't end up in the drink, and there are no reported injuries. Edit: Here's a link to the story! Edit: There's some confusion regarding injuries. One report says they are some but they are minor!! http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/07/22/southwest-airlines-nose-gear-fails-laguardia/2576493/ Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
July 22, 201312 yr Southwest has a pretty good safety record right? I fly on them all the time! My favorite flight was with the "rapping" flight attendant!! - - Tommy - -
July 22, 201312 yr I was listening to liveatc and didn't know what was going on but knew they were getting a lot of overflow. Controllers sounded confused and now I know what he was asking the pilots about that they saw. JFK was a mess. Sent from my Apple communications device. William Sequeira
July 22, 201312 yr a problem would they go into KLGA, when JFK with it's 14000ft runway i Why so he could balance it on the main gear tell it stopped 14000 ft later? Like balancing a teeter totter Eventually the nose MUST come to the ground and it would be rather quickly. Stopping rather quickly.
July 23, 201312 yr It is in the numbers....the amount of aircraft, short routes, quantity of landings and takeoffs that Southwest operates you are going to get the occasional incident like this.I agree, very safe airline to fly with all things considered. July 23, 201312 yr Author It is in the numbers....the amount of aircraft, short routes, quantity of landings and takeoffs that Southwest operates you are going to get the occasional incident like this. I agree, very safe airline to fly with all things considered. Actually there were a number of maintenance issues they had a couple of years ago, that the FAA hit them with some serious fines. I think though those have been corrected since then! Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d

July 23, 201312 yr The problem was not known before landing. Stay away from the "main-stream" media for your aviation information. Always good advice Tom "I just wanna tell you both: good luck. We're all counting on you."
July 23, 201312 yr I suppose the NTSB will check the landing gear indicator. But if the nose wheel wasn't indicating the pilots missed it.
July 23, 201312 yr Southwest has a pretty good safety record right? I fly on them all the time! My favorite flight was with the "rapping" flight attendant!! I liked the ground crew guy who stuck his head in just before we buttoned up, and said "Have a great flight to Cancun!" We were headed for Baltimore, but it's the thought that counts.

July 24, 201312 yr A passenger took video from inside the plane of the approach and landing.. http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Southwest-Flight-Landing-Gear-Collapse-LaGuardia-Injuries-NTSB-Boeing-Investigation-216561131.html Seemed like an insanely hard landing. Soon as they touched down the front end just plunged downwards violently.. It's almost as if the rear wheels were completely locked when it touched down causing the nose to be thrust down into the runway. July 24, 201312 yr It looks like the airplane pitched forward in the last moment right before touchdown.
