Some GEX - FTX Global comparisons

Featured Replies

Thank you!

Well... IMO it won't be an easy choice between GEX and FTX Global... that's how I feel.

I will have  both, I have 2 different rigs to run each on. I already have all of GEX and UTX- waiting on delivery of a new 2nd rig for all FTX only and will give a few weeks for the FTXG dust to settle before purchase. The GEX box will also carry Aerosoft sceneries, Fly Tampa, etc. I buy everybody's stuff

FTX  vs. GEX: Each product has its own strengths and weaknesses and I like both so a no-brainer for me.

A few guys over at SOH ask me to shoot a few FTXGlobal screenies of particular area's around the globe. Maybe you like to have a look too. Not so much comparison with GEX although i have enjoyed that very much too. These are just to show how pretty FTXG can look with everything maxed, (no road traffic), together with UTX USA and Europe (roads unchecked), fps at 30-40 average. ( i7 980x @ 3.33 Ghz, GTX480, 12GB ram, W7pro/64). I'd almost say who needs FSX11.

Here's a selection starting with USA:

can I make a request to position at LIMF4000ft AGL and take a couple shots from up there to see how things looks like with FTX?

I currently fly with GEX and UTX, northeastern Italy near the alps, city of Torino, would love to see how FTX treats the area.

thanks to anyone if they can take their time to do this : )

After testing ftxg, having previously gex, I can say two things.

Ftxg seems to place stuff a bit more randomly than gex. When I arrive to the main hubs where I live, using gex, I can identify some roads and other few things near of the airports that actually are there on real life. This doesn't happen with ftxg.

When flying at high altitude with ftxg, in my fsx, it seems a little more blurred textures than with gex... dunno why thou...

Other than that, I like a lot more the colors ftxg has than the too much browns found with gex...although, the greens in some areas are a bit too exaggerated, like the Madrid surrounds. In real life there are a lot more yellow/brownish areas than what ftxg represents...

So, as read somewhere in the thread, ftxg aim is not replacing gex, but the default fsx textures...

Thanks so much for posting these...they are terrific. Any idea of how different the same shots would look on a DX9 rig with the same hardware?

neither GEX nor FTXG place any geographically accurate roads. that is the realm of vector data such as UTX

Well - there's one benefit that FTXG's given me, and that's without buying it. Like many others, I imagine, I've been taking a long hard look at my GEX scenery to compare with the various FTXG screenshots, most of which I notice were taken with the scenery sliders maxed out. I have never been able to run with the sliders higher than Dense or Very Dense, but for the purpose of this exercise I cranked them up to Extremely Dense, expecting to see GEX at its best, but also some stutters.

Not at all - everything is as smooth as at the lower settings. I have no idea why. But I like it !

It's almost as if GEX is saying, "Don't leave me, see what I can do when you really get to know me". :He He:

Will do, stay tuned. By coincidence: my last flight yesterday was from LIMF to Nice! I am more than happy to go back there again now I have FTXG installed. ^_^

EDIT

This is with FTXG and UTX Europe, at 5000 ft (which would be 4000 ft AGL). Looking north:

LOL

Pretty much as I expected. Are you able to list all the files changed, Rob ? Or are there too many ?

Dick,

Specifically terrain.cfg in FSX root; AutogenDescriptions.spb, default.xml, Extrusions.spb, Materials.spb and RoofDescriptions.spb in the Autogen folder; lclookup.bgl in scenery\base\scenery; roofs.bgl in scenery\global\scenery. Some of the changes appear to be additional entries to support the new autogen etc. so won't affect anything else but other changes are modifications to existing entries and will have an effect. A number of textures in scenery\global\texture and the root FSX texture folder also appear to have been updated, although whether actually changed or simply having a different file date and time stamp I can't say. The main ones I've listed were definitely changed though as I did a binary comparison. Interestingly the texture backup made by the FTXG installer seems to contain a number of textures that aren't actually changed like some of the special UTX textures!

The point is that the bgl files above (particularly lclookup.bgl) are key to what textures are displayed by the FSX landclass program code. If these are changed in ways outside of the scope of the FSX SDK landclass specifications then the results may be unpredicatable for other products that do rely on the SDK, hence the warning by Nick. Provided the user can go back to their original files if they wish then all is well (for the user at least, though whether any product should do this is another matter). I assume that the forthcoming FTXG uninstaller will rectify this situation but Orbx have said it will be a stand-alone tool rather than integrated with FTX Central so perhaps not as clean to use if you wish to switch between products easily.

It's just an inconvenience for me as I'm aware of the underlying issues but looking at the posts in this thread it seems that many people are not! I think Nick's comments should be read carefully and not simply from the point of view of a competing product. GEX has been around for as long as Orbx and works fully within the scope of the FSX SDK assuring compatibility with any other add-on which does the same.

Will do, stay tuned. By coincidence: my last flight yesterday was from LIMF to Nice! I am more than happy to go back there again now I have FTXG installed. ^_^

I really really REALLY want to thank you for this. You,ve made me a great service. I'm simply stunned by the overall improvements: the airport blends very well with the surrounding area, the town of Caselle at the end of the runway is properly placed and populated, the countryside finally looks as if there was human intervention of some kind rather than a huge arm from above sprinkling a once barren wasteland with a handful of fields and crops.

Wonderful, simply wonderful. I'm sold.

Thanks again, as I said it was very very kind of you to take your time for this : )

You're very welcome. Hopefully things will look the same on your PC when you have FTXG...! ^_^
