I use two iPads with Virtual CDU where one is set up as the captains and the other one as the FO's FMC and it works flawlessly. One iPad is a first generation running iOS 5.1.1 and the other one is an iPad 3 with iOS 6.1.3. They both perfom equally well and without any lag at all.

To me this really is the only working FMC solution. I've tried all those splashtop and what not, apps but they all need you run FSX in windowed mode which is no go for me. Virtual CDU also supports iFly 737 in FS9 and FSX! :D

i have just tested this with 2 iPads as well, a generation 1 and 2 and i have the same experience: Excellent app this!

and indeed , full screen support is the major selling point here for me. that;s so much better than some more expensive hardware solutions would offer

Is the FMC screen a copy of that's showing on your screen or does it get all the text info from the SDK and show it to you using it's own fonts, etc? I ask this because famous apps like xdisplay is able to get the image from FSX and show it on your ipad, but you can clearly see FPS drop when you do this.

Does this app affect the fps? Have any of you guys tested it on and off to compare?

Thanks

I can't tell any hit on the frames rate.  It's just amazing.  The guy here who tipped ME to it... I OWE that guy, BIG TIME.  Without a doubt, one of the premier apps for FSX, hands-down!  The fact that you can run your FSX full screen AND have a decent sized FMC at your fingertips- it's a game-changer!  Incredible value, and makes me even happier that I bought the Note 10.1 by Samsung.  I could use my Galaxy Note 2 phone for a second FMC but the smaller (5.5") screen size sort of argues against that idea.  Luckily, the Note 10.1 can swap between different open apps quite quickly and easily.

it's using the data only and uses the tablest's own visuals to appear as a hardware CDU as far as i understand.

that also explains why it doesn,t need windowed mode. it has nothing to do with the pixels on the fsx screen.

no fps loss noticeable whatsoever

Wow!! That's amazing news.

That's gotta be my next buy then!!

I also tried the two cdus one on my 10.1 android tab and the other on my Galaxy s4 as with the ipad it worked flawlessly!

Those that are on the fence about buying this, there is a free demo that you can try (on android at least, not sure about apple) once you try the demo you will want to buy the full product.

heres the link for the Android demo on the Google play store... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.virtualavionics.virtualcdu&hl=en

I just sent them an email to ask about supporting the 777, will let you know what they say if they reply.

Excellent product and I really hope the author will make one for the PMDG 777.

The SDK does not support reading or writing to the CDU (with very good reason) - if the author of this application has hacked into our dlls to do this then he is in very clear violation of our EULA. He certainly never contacted us before selling it.

second that. after all the hype here I bought it, too; guess the developer ows you something after he sees a steep increase in sales :-). but it is really amazing indeed and works great. what I like most is that it reacts instantaneously, there is really no lag at all. and yes, no frame rate hit either. very nice to not have the CDU open as 2D popup during flight.

did 2 short flights with the NGX last night into EDDF and LOWI and enjoyed programming the FMC via the ipad. so much easier. played around with the various FMC settings and options of the NGX and ended up with an annoying warning sound after takeoff. I was furiously looking around for any EICAS or other error message but could not stop that warning sound. then at FL130 realized by zooming into the overhead panel and confirming from the outside that I opened the cargo doors on ground via the CDU and forgot to close them  . realistic as the NGX is I could of course not close the doors in flight but brought her down safely to close the doors on the ground then  .

so to those still hesitating: go get that app. really adds to the realism and worth every penny. and yes I will also write to the developer and ask for the T7 support.

oops. not good news if that is the case. but then I herewith ask you to be tolerant and cooperative enough to find an agreement and let him continue. that app is just so amazing and really adds to the realism of your products.

EDIT: of course if PMDG is working on / plans to do an own CDU for tablets then please let us know, I would be more than willing to give my money to PMDG but as of now this virtual CDU is the best thing available

I have no idea how it really works and what it is doing exactly, just speculation from a non-techie here. I can only welcome products like this one. How it is done, i do not care as an enduser of course.

How it works, no idea. If the developer is in violation of the EULA, no idea. I just know it's a great app, and hope that both PMDG and the developer of this app will have a good discussion on how to avoid having to crack the code, and still be able to support the NGX within this app.

It's just to good to stop using it.

Also, because now I do not have to use a 2nd screen anymore, my framerates went up from 13fps to 24fps... Yes, it is that big of an impact on my FSX system...

of course if PMDG is working on / plans to do an own CDU for tablets then please let us know, I would be more than willing to give my money to PMDG but as of now this virtual CDU is the best thing available

As people are only speculating as to how this app works please can PMDG liaise with the authors before sending in the Lawyers ;)

You have to enable data broadcast option in PMDG options so maybe this would explain how its working?
