Can PMDG enable FMC control via Internet IP address?

Featured Replies

One feature that I think would be amazing would be for PMDG to enable the FMC to be controlled via a web browser and an IP address from the main FSX PC, thus enabling wireless connectivity on touchpad devices, such as iPad or the Samsung Note 10.1, without having to worry about the OS on the receiving device.  Such a feature is available today from competitors, both here in FSX and over on the darkside (XPX).

I don't know if this is hard or simple to do- but it would be so very amazing and save people the frames hit of having to display the FMC on their non-touch secondary monitor.  Of course this suggestion could still be used by people without a touchpad as well.

Captain Randazzo, could this be possible?

I would love this feature as well. My iPad would definitely come in handy for this. Having a nice FMC UI on my iPad. And I know if PMDG implement this feature, it would be done right, and look extremely beautiful.

Aerosoft Airbus X Extended has this feature too.

Yep. I use the Virtual CDU together with the 737 NGX on my iPad, and it works like a charm. I wouldn't be surprised if it is possible to create a similar app to work with other PMDG planes as well.

I think Rob intended via Safari on iPad or other browser with other device, correct?

Like said above, the unique aircraft has this feature is Airbus X, at the moment, but would be very useful imo.

What do you think about a ND or PFD via web browser on iPad, so you can fly without VC, at least during takeoff or landing and save fps? Is there any app that does job (no browser) at the moment?

Would be cool to have all available gauges and stuff for iPads, and you can pick and choose which one to show.

Thanks for the wonderful suggestion about Virtual CDU   (now available for iPad OR Android!!).

For a one-time fee of $20- I'm "SOLD" - I downloaded the free trial version (works at only a handful of airports) to test when I get off work tonight.  If it works half as well as I hope- it will solve a HUGE problem for me, and enhance my NGX experience - for pennies!  I was considering the FlightDeckSolutions CDU  which is fully-modeled but uses a VGA monitor (thus robbing frames) connection off your FSX video card.  This solution is more elegant, not as nice as the real deal in the flesh with the 'real' push buttons-  but $20 versus $1000 (plus $40 shipping) is a no-brainer.  I am doubly-excited by reports that it is very quick to respond to button presses, not the case from what I've heard of some of the other competitive apps like iDisplay (YMMV).

There is a huge market out there for apps like Aaron has suggested, a customizable array of gauges for example.  Being able to put the ND and PFD on the Samsung Note 10.1 would be a Godsend.  I would then be able to have the relevant data at my fingertips and larger, rather than popping those windows open and dragging them off to one side in the VC.  The size they are in regular view is too small for these old eyes.

I have to say that using REX Essential Plus OD plus the payware airports and GSX along with Orbx FTX Global has taken me to a happy place in FSX that I had forgotten about.  Overall the playback is reasonably smooth, and the eye candy is just amazing.

I had an opportunity flying on PilotEdge the other day when the traffic flow at KSFO was maxed-out, and it was a real game-changer.  Today I had a severe TCAS event with a VOR airplane that required sudden diversion to avoid a mid-air collision.  It's just mind-boggling what these computers can do!

If you want gauges over the network and access to the cdu via your web browser I also suggest prosim737. Not cheap but its the best avionics package out there.

If PMDG is able to come out with a cockpit edition (like ifly) that would be godsend.

I heard the FDS cdu is great, but expensive as you have mentioned. Another alternative is the opencockpit cdu at around 500 euros.

How much traffic is on pilot edge? I may consider it later down the line...kind of sick with FSInn crashing fsx.

I wish someone would update the vatsim clients. I would gladly pay for a commercial version.

I had the VRInsight CDU-II which is a close copy of the FDS unit, at a substantially lower price point.  That said, the performance of such an item was sketchy, to be polite.  The response on-screen when pressing the keys on the CDU was not instantaneous.  It also hit my frames because the graphics card had to split duties between the sim rendition and the CDU separate image (over VGA line) to the 'mini monitor' that is used in both the VRinsight and FDS CDU's.  I think the FDS unit is superior in build quality and I sorely want to 'try it', but it's not happening - too pricey.

Thank you for your comments - quite good.

Robert.

I purchased the VirtualCDU app for Android for $20.  Works perfectly, but you MUST add a special line of code about the PMDG SDK (Software Developer Kit) as specified on the support page for the Virtual CDU:

2. For NGX users, due access control some users need to manually change the file 737NGX_Options.ini usually located on "C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator X/PMDG/PMDG

2.1 Open the file and check if  the text below is present :

[sDK]
EnableDataBroadcast=1

2.2. If not present, copy and paste the text above to the end of file and save it.

Once I did this, my FMC on my Samsung Note 10.1 works far better than the 'real hardware' I purchased elsewhere!  It's MUCH easier to read and MUCH faster response!

RUN don't walk, and get either an iPad or Android Tablet (RECOMMEND Samsung Note 10.1).  By the time you put all your bonus touchpad apps on one or the other, your sim experience will explode exponentially.

This Virtual CDU is "MUST OWN"

I do hope they add 777 support :)

  • Commercial Member

Glad to hear it works for you :) Lets hope the 777 version will be available sooner than later! It would be great to also have the 777 lower EICAS on the ipad

Rob Prest

Thanks for the app suggestion, didn't know about this (for NGX). Hopefully 777 support can be added, but I would hazard a guess it would be another app!

Karl Brooker

I have the virtual cdu app on my Android tablet and it is excellent, instantaneous response from pressing the keys and they are always updating it, so as long as there is an SDK for the 777 I can't see why they wouldn't support it.
