Fuel Planning

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

I have been knocking out a number of realistic based on Flightaware data, medium and long range flight plans for use once the B777 is released - with my longest planned so far, a relatively modest (for the B772LR/F) 4951NM.

When planning a shorter flight in the B737 series, fuel burn is pretty much constant throughout the flight and hence flight time x fuel rate gives me the required fuel needed to complete the trip.  Then you add the holding, altn fuel fixed reserve and any additional fuel thought necessary to give you a fuel required at start up.

It will obviously be a lot harder here with the 777 as the fuel burn rate could easily change by a considerable margin as fuel burns off, step climbs etc - with the longer the flight, the more variation in fuel burn occurring.

Does anyone know how we will be able to get an accurate fuel burn for a given distance that takes into account aircraft weight, step climbs, wind components etc?

Regards

Tim Carter

On the PMDG 737NGX you can use the FMC for fuel planning.

I would think the same feature will be available for the 777.

So with that method you have to enter in to the CDU all the waypoints, altitudes, winds before you got a required fuel figure?

If it takes 45- 60 minutes to fuel the aircraft that's a lot of time hanging around waiting. You would be able to go through your flows and checklists much faster than that even single handed!

I do appreciate its a sim not real world but the flight crew have already decided on fuel before they get to the aircraft in reality.

I am not sure if you are asking:

1) How do I calculate the fuel required for my flight?

Answere: I would think with the CDU, so the same as with the 737.

or

2) Do I have to wait for "real time" fuelling to be completed before I can fly

Answere: I cant imagine that. I am sure you can just set the fuel you need in an instant.

PFPX will (most probably / hopefully / please....) be out by the end of this month. PFPX can do de calcs for a 777

With the 747 I use the tables in the manuals. To me that is one of the most satisfying parts of the sim - I enjoy the planning before the flying.

Are we likely to get the flight planning tables with the release?  Are they likely to help with step climb info etc as well?

Cheers

Until PFPX is released, I've always found FSBuild to be very good for fuel calculations.

Maybe you can try Simbrief.com fuel planning is included don't know how accurate it is for the 777

Kimo

If PFPX happens to still be behind closed doors after the T7 is released, VaCanada have realeased their PHP-based briefing dispatch system to the public to use on any flight. It can be found at www.simbrief.com. Just register an account and plan away (Don't worry, its free!).

Flightplans will be spat out in the Air Canada OFP format, and include full nav logs with fuel analysis etc. Pretty neat tool to use in the mean time until we can get our hands on a copy of PFPX

Maybe you can try Simbrief.com fuel planning is included don't know how accurate it is for the 777

EDIT: Looks like Kimo beat me to it!

Trouble with that app is it's old and no longer updated.

I think Ernie might disagree. Many of the flight profiles are user generated.

Wow that simbrief thing looks like real fun to use.

Two questions though:

1)For fuel planning purposes alone, what is the benefit of simbrief over using a CDU type fuel planning like the 737 NGX has (I see simbrief does much more than fuel planning alone, but I am talking only about fuel planning)

2) Towards the end of the video....what is that unlocking Navigraph part about? I know what Navigraph is, but I dont know what Simbrief uses it for.
