It's not just FSX, Microsoft is getting out of the PC business

Featured Replies

I for one cannot afford a second gaming machine, so I am using my home office PC as gaming machine.

The money saved on buying a play station of some kind I spend on games.

Why buy a console when the game handling is mediocre for 3D shooters which I like to play online?

A console is good only for when you want to play with friends IMO. For that I occasionally go to friends, but still doesn't beat a LAN party for Counter Strike!

I won't even get started on the "combat flight sim" type games available for consoles!

The misinformation machine is hard at work here.

I'm an old school PC enthusiast keyboard+mouse gamer and will never go to a console if I can help it. Never had one and don't plan on getting one.

The rumors circulating around that PC gaming is on it's way out couldn't be more wrong. That's all I have to say about that.

As the OP I'm glad to hear that PC gaming is very strong.

However, my comment was on the fact that MS is getting out of it, and some here have corrected me on that.

But, I'm still not totally convinced, because if you're (MS) believeing in PC gaming why kill FSX and then turn around and kill Flight.

Also, the New  person they got working for the PC gaming division from Steam (which has been mentioned here several times) quit Steam because several high profile people were laid off. Keep in mind the Windows platform they're talking about is Windows 8 - think tablet and mobile. Windows 8.1 is bringing back the Start button and screen, because too many people (desktop folks) complained. Which I'm glad.

Don't get me wrong I'm a PC person. But I'm also a techy person. That has been the main problem with PC games and PC's in general. Your software has to run on some many different types of PC's that it creates a support nightmare. Hence, that's why consoles re-entered the market.

Before PC's there was Atari...commodore 64, then came PC's. Atari and the 64 slowly faded away. Support nightmare...bring back consoles :-)

Thanks for all the great feedback and education.

Because they were the wrong type of game - not financially worthwhile?

As I stated Microsoft will not be getting out of the PC Gaming industry, they will license out stuff like HALO or be a producer to other studios as a safer way to procure funds. The Gaming industry as a whole (all systems combined) is worth more than both Hollywood and Performing Arts combined and that says a lot. Microsoft knows how much money is out there for gaming, they are not going to pass it up, what they will do is play a safer bet however, until perhaps they find a product that is completely worth investing in.

So if any of us needed another set of FSX discs... We're SOL?

You will just have buy the discs elsewhere. All that is happening with the GFWL Marketplace is that Microsoft is shutting down their own online storefront. Games will still be available elsewhere, like Amazon or Steam for example.

This is an automatic message.

Until iPhone came along there was not mass attraction to smartphones.  I believe a killer multithreaded flight simulator, done to a level on a par w/ what iPhone meant to mobile devices, would bring out a much larger market than currently exists for flight simulator.  Look what you have to do to make FSX be worth using.  A turnkey simulator, 64bit, multicore/multithread optimized, DX11, designed to use large amounts of system (dirt cheap now) & video ram.  The core engine & SDKs could be marketed by one company and expect to have a service life upwards of 6-10y.  Look how many legitimate businesses have sprung up to support FSX.  Name another piece of 'entertainment' software that despite the restricted niche, and despite its 7 year age has spawned so much in the way of 3rd party development and online retailers.  Now take a totally modernized platform as described, send out SDK's to the best of the best, and expect even greater market share over time.  Maybe P3D will be this simulator--it's certainly banking on exploiting this very model, exemplified in FSX:  core engine support & leave the content to the robust 3PDs.

It will not shut down.

You do not know that.

In fact, it will shut down when (not if) it serves its owners' purpose to do so.

But who cares about MS. I'll keep my Win7 Pro DVD at a safe and secure place :P

Make sure you have all the updates archived in a self-installable format as well.

Indeed. You can never be sure. However, when I was still playing other games, I did like Steam. I also had some fears at first but in the end it's a great, convenient and easy system.

However (again), I also didn't fear too much about Steam shutting down because I have never ever had a game that I still played after a year or so, let alone after a few years... Games get old quickly.

The ONLY game that I still play years after buying it, is FSX...! And with FSX I sometimes DO fear what happens in the future with all those mandatory online validations and checks... Steam is a BIG company and I don't see it shut down soon but a lot of FSX developers are small 'companies' and the chance that an addon suddenly can't be installed anymore (or even work) is a lot higher than it is with Steam...

Steam gives you extra shelf and living space not having to be required to have phyiscal cd or box to install the game steam knows computers get upgraded all the time most downloads not a problem. FSX do have long term concerns about reinstallation never do with steam.
