August 16, 201312 yr Have you seen mainstream games on Best Buy shelves? The 90's and early 2000's were PC gaming's hayday. You'll still find some big titles on digital download (eg BF3 COD Everquest HL based titles Sports) Mobile is the future ( and I'm a PC fan) That's cause it's Best Buy. Mainstream gaming has gone to online delivery via Origin, Steam, etc... Any gamer knows that. Heck, even consoles are moving to online delivery for the future. And no, I don't ever see mobile devices like an iphone (and sometimes the DS and PSP/VITA) being the future of gaming. The hardware will just never compare to a PC or Console. It's good for a 'mobile' game to pass the time with or for kids but that's about it. Shaun OrtolanoTronAviation.com
August 16, 201312 yr I seriously can't remember the last time I bought a boxed game. Comment removed... Lionel
August 16, 201312 yr Commercial Member Pc gaming is almost obsolete. Everything is mobile or console... Sorry that is flat our wrong/incorrect/community myth. PC Gaming is still one of the strongest thanks to mobile fb games etc being muiti-play mobile/pc combi's and also the mass pc gamer market keeping the consoles at bay dispite what others might have you think. August 16, 201312 yr And no, I don't ever see mobile devices like an iphone (and sometimes the DS and PSP/VITA) being the future of gaming. The hardware will just never compare to a PC or Console. It's good for a 'mobile' game to pass the time with or for kids but that's about it. It's not that simple. Looking at some recent reports on gaming, mobile gaming is becoming a major part of the gaming environment. The problem with this comment, and some others is in assuming one type of gaming will meet everyone's needs. PC gaming is bigger for the more technically inclined and who want the latest bleeding edge technology, or for genres, like flight sims and strategy games, where there isn't a decent alternative. Then there are people who were never into PC gaming, but are big into consoles because it's a different experience. You can have some friends over, drink some beer (assuming consoles are only for kids is a misplaced stereotype) and play the latest NFL or NHL game together in the living room. And finally mobile gaming is catching on for the more casual gaming people, or situations like sitting in the airport waiting for your flight. These people, and they're not just kids either, often don't care about the latest graphics, at least not when playing on their mobile device. Some people prefer one type almost exclusively, others like each one for the different experience or situation each one is better suited for. The future isn't about any single type completely taking over, and never has been. Microsoft is trying to make sure they have a piece of each. Right now they have big portions of the PC and console markets, but little in the mobile arena (and not just in gaming). Thus the heavy push towards mobile and touch screens in Windows 8. This latest hiring of one of the key people formerly involved with Steam appears to basically be aimed at beefing up Microsoft's digital distribution platform and gaming strategy on the PC side. Don't think they're abandoning PC gaming at all, and realize that they need to do better.
August 16, 201312 yr Am I missing something...? Isn't this only about games for the PC? This new release is just that. But it appears to be another step in a trend toward reshaping their business model. MS is starting to lose me. The recent move toward annual subscription for Office is another example. I refer to it as "zero gravity" marketing, as in zero gravity boots. Everything is about trying to get change to fall from our pockets, even if it means turning the customer base upside down. Or perhaps this is an indication of now-legal recreational puffing now legal in the state of Washington. August 16, 201312 yr Commercial Member Sorry that is flat our wrong/incorrect/community myth. PC Gaming is still one of the strongest thanks to mobile fb games etc being muiti-play mobile/pc combi's and also the mass pc gamer market keeping the consoles at bay dispite what others might have you think. Not to mention the giant modding communities for the PC games that support it. PC gaming is still very strong. In fact, I read an article recently that by 2015, PC game sales are expected to double the sales of Xbox and PS games combined. I'll have to look around and see if I can find it again... August 16, 201312 yr A tournament for the PC game DOTA 2 called "The International" was just run last week with a total prize pool of over $10 million ($1.7 million to the winners, a team from Sweden) - the final had over a million simultaneous viewers on twitch.tv. PC gaming is far from obsolete or dead. Also, no one buys PC games at retail stores anyway - it's all through digital services like Steam, Origin, Battle.net etc now. I seriously can't remember the last time I bought a boxed game. Im afraird I have to agree with Ryan. PC gaming is FAR from obsolete. There are stronger and faster systems coming out, more and more PC adaptations (a petition gathered enough signatures to get Warner Bros studios to make a PC version of MK9 as they were orginally gonna do console only), and if you check Steam or Origin the industry is booming... You sir must be dwelling beneath a mighty rock to miss all this Flying Tigers Group
August 16, 201312 yr Pc gaming is almost obsolete. Everything is mobile or console... I think Chris Roberts would put up a strong argument against that statement together with the thousands who play the likes of EVE, ARMA, COD, MWO, The Sims and hundreds of MMOG's like the new Skyrim etc, etc, etc and once VR hits the market the sky's the limit! Hi, I remember my last boxed store purchase for PC, I wouldnt dare call it a game though, more of a seriouse simulation experience, that is to say i had no isea where it would go at the time, " MFSGold" definatly not a game haha. As has been said though over and over, dont need to go to stores with Origin and Steam running, Regards Guss. Anthony Kemp. August 16, 201312 yr Title of OP is misleading, linked article even links to this: http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/15/microsoft-hires-former-valve-jason-holtman/ I think they want to join the online-only delivery mechanism game is all. PC gaming is not dead. It is in better shape than just a few years ago. Jeff Bea I am an avid globetrotter with my trusty Lufthansa B777F, Polar Air Cargo B744F, and Atlas Air B748F.
August 16, 201312 yr Very few people buy physical copies of games from actual stores any more. Digital downloads are huge on the PC. I got a SIMS3 expansion the other day from best buy and a couple of boxed games at Frys last week, Yeah, they are scarce at times, but I still prefer it over online, such as Steam which I have never used and really have no intention of using. Best, Michael KDFW
August 16, 201312 yr You should change your stance on Steam. Sure when it first launched people were unsure. What if it shuts down? What will happen to my games? It will not shut down. A huge benefit is having all your games localized in one place. No discs to lose or go searching for when you reinstall or rebuild your pc. No disc needed to play. No patches to go searching for. You don't have to drive to the store or wait for the mail. You've got a friends list like Xbox Live or PSN, achievements, play time. Oh and the sales! Oh my the sales. During the annual summer sale, I got Bioshock 1 and 2 $5 each, Bioshock Infinite $30, Bastion $2, Company of Heroes $2, DCS A10 $16, Borderlands 2 $10, Walking Dead all episodes $7, Portal 2 $5. There were many more but I had to stop! These are all purchases that for me, and millions of others, would not have happened otherwise at retail prices and locations. The benefits of steam far outweigh any perceived negatives, for me imo there are none. Brent Baker
