What happens to FSX when 5-7 GHz is common?

Featured Replies

But P3D will still be 32bit so... don't expect too much of it.

I don't understand the relevance of it but I know they announced 64-bit developer kits or something like that some time ago so that must be suggestive at least that is where they plan to go.

That's not an easy process, and will take time to do it right.

But at least that have a complete roadmap to follow to get there.

be when will developers stop escalating that demand for more power? (See NYC X and others)

why blame the developers?  I want them to push the limit... It would be helpful if they give some install options...where it can run on todays slow and hot machines and keep some options for future when we get 6-7Ghz.

I don't want addon developers to limit what they can do.

that would reduce the entire world in FSX.. I just want to reduce it say..,.for  DD NYC City alone..until I get my hands on a 7Ghz machine .

Not blaming, but since you mentioned it - going in That direction you know if you have ever coded or created some content for FSX  that many add-ons could have been managed a LOT better without any impact to the visuals or functions as there are ways to do things and not to do things, but I digress...I was merely pointing out the fact that the detail and impact keeps increasing as a result of our demands and the competition to out do the "other guy" etc. Also to mention as well is the available detail available thru sources (like orthophotos and higher res stock), better tools and experience (that seems to outpace the ability to balance it out with clean coding).

Just look at NYC X, I love it and sure it could be coded in a better way, perhaps better use of LOD and BGL management but heck, there still not much you are going to about having 6000+ custom 3D objects loaded plus everything else going on.

But on the other hand:

Why not a compromise to produce the 33% major visually distinct buildings in all boroughs, maybe 50% in Manhattan and do the rest with a custom AG library ala ORBX? Bet we could see 30%-50% more frames or more, have really good night lighting (NYC X at night is beyond ugly). We would still have a very similar visual experience, even better at DUSK/DAWN/Night and really enjoy it.

Hey ever fly the Simlabbs Concorde? heheh Anyway, yeah Developers and USers, we drive each other crazy.

Catch my drift?

+1 except that sometimes were they don't overlap  each other well (Default + ALL Add-ons) and in that case a specific add-on oriented "slider" would be ideal.

Cheers!

Okay this is what's gonna happen, in August 2014 it's announced that the governments of the World have been in contact with Alien races for years. After the announcement they (the Aliens) send an ambassador. He ( at least I think it's a he, it's hard to tell) see's someone using FSX and falls in love with it, after getting a copy he is appalled to see how crap the coding is. So, he recodes it using the latest Alien tech allowing it to run (as a gesture of good will) on all of Earths Intel and AMD chips. (EDIT, Microsoft complain about copyright, so he vaporizes them) The flight sim gang are overwhelmed with gratitude and vote him in as the president of the World. And we all lived happily ever after. (until the Morgs arrived anyway!)

Reality Is For People Who Can't Handle Simulation!

The Thermal Design Point (TDP) of Intel processors is unlikely to support above 4GHz in stock form, ever. It would generate too much heat to make it practical. I have friends at Intel who told me they could clock the Netburst architecture to 4-5 GHz, with H2O cooling. That was three generations of architecture ago, before Core, Nehalem, and Sandy Bridge. Since then, the pipelines have gotten more complex which limits flat-out clock speed. As the speed goes up, the "long path" (weak link in the silicon chain) clock sync becomes more and more a problem.

+1

Living in Silicon Valley, I too have friends who are "silicon designers" for intel and sun (oops, I meant oracle).  Unless we get an amazing new breakthrough in an as of yet known technology, we are at the wall in terms of the IPC and clock rates with the current tech.  So to answer the OP's question: most likely it'll be "pushing up daisies".

Just disable user account control per the "user account control settings" and set to "never notify me" any other hack will disable apps from the tile menu.

Install FSX and all add-ons as Administrator.

My structure is SSD drive C:FSX\.... all large scenery add-ons are on separate 2TB drive H:FSX installed\

I plan on a dedicated SSD drive in the future, but untill then this works just fine, win8 boots in 7 seconds and FSX is also very quick to boot.

This thread's topic is kind of weird since pretty much every modern CPU on modern hardware can be easily clocked to over 5 GHz already (yes, Haswell as well with a minor mod). Even the old 2600k has been able to do this for years now. And it will improve FSX performance drastically. I find it strange that it's always the people running at stock speed or minimal OC like 4 GHz that have this discussion. Get yourself a nice watercooler and boost those UEFI settings of yours. Then you can stop dreaming that there will some day be a magic new Nvidia driver or a magic new 10 GHz CPU delivered to your home. You already have the CPU power, you just need to unleash it.

Yep, and then watch FSX Blue Screen every flight.

Not to veer too much off topic, but I seem to recall someone who seemed credible posting a year or two ago that despite its age and associated limitations, the manner in which fsx (and it's previous versions) render a simulated world in which to fly was actually quite ahead of its time, and difficult to improve upon. Not the way the software is able to utilize hardware, but how the software is able to simulate a horizon to horizon world in which to fly. Before I'm willing to write FSX's epitaph, can someone shed some light on this point?

Well, yes for instance on the global terrain engine:

So says the under powered non overclocked user...do you actually have a airplane model or do you fly with just the propeller spinning?

I was just wondering if those slow AMD processors can handle both, Hah!

Go out and fly today Jim, you already have more post on here than Adam and Eve!

Probably won't be able to get past 7 GHz without moving past silicon for chip materials. Not sure when that's going to happen, but probably sometime before 2020 would be my guess. I don't know if it'll be fully replaced, but some stuff I've read is that silicon will be used in conjunction with the new materials for faster speeds, etc.

Jeff Thomson

7GHz will not happen. More cores will happen.

ACES predicted that CPUs would get higher clock speeds as time went on, so they designed FSX for that. But instead we got dual-core CPUs.
