Well I do not know how many members cults usually have....

I doubt this information will be public.  Also, copies sold does NOT = copies used ;)

Theft (aka Piracy) is a big problem ... based on actual usage data (most software produced within that last decade includes routines that update servers on execution start/validation) only 35-45% of the usage are legitimate (paid-for) users.  Source is IDC data obtain from many companies.

"Always on (internet connection required)" anti-theft protection in software seems to be working well enough (not perfect) to be main-stream adopted.  I don't know if PMDG will adopt such a process, I hope they do.

I don't like to use the term piracy because it glorifies theft, and that's what is really happening.  It also reduces the ability of those that produce software to produce more and better software ... nobodies a winner.

I hope they never adopt this as this negatively affects those of us with less than reliable internet connections, if they were to do this then my 777 would be unflyable between 3 am and 5 am when for some reason my connection drastically slows down and many times stops altogether. Also lets say the unimaginable happens and PMDG shuts down, unless they let someone else run those servers your 777 would be then be rendered useless forever.

They don't need to check every minute, could be once an hour, or once a day, once a week, whatever the developers/PMs decide.  Put it this way, since you're posting here, you obviously have enough internet "reliability" for this process to work. ;)

They may have special cases with legitimate customers but those will be far and few, certainly not of significant quantity to offset anti-theft protection.

Always ON is a reality of software development, it's unfortunate but with 55-65% theft rate, there really is no choice.  People will complain but ultimately doesn't impact the bottom line and seems to have increased the bottom line in most cases.

Thank you for clarifying this Ryan.

I will not purchase software that require it.

Just because I have an internet connection now does not mean I always will.

I am not at all promoting software piracy because it is wrong, but it's going to happen no matter what.

Just like theft in brick and mortar store always has been.

"Always on" market test that Microsoft tried did not bode well for them. X Box One was turning into a PR nightmare and the VP got fired because of it

The new sim city is also having problems with the always online requirement.

PMDG not the only show in town.

The question implies “flight sim community” = PMDG owners.

I won’t buy PMDG because I don’t have the time, the money or the pc to get the best out of it, but I will still be doing my low and slow GA flights that I enjoy.

When you PMDG 777 folk have finished wetting your selves perhaps the rest of us can get online to read the rest of the site that appeals to us.

Or you could just ignore this forum.

It's a reality, but not an all-present reality. And there is a choice. Plenty of software developers are doing fine without it. The trick is to forget the pirates' money, they can't get it either way, and concentrate instead on not scaring off those who are prepared to hand their money over.

In any case, it's highly unlikely that a 55%-65% theft rate equates to 55%-65% revenue loss.

As a seafarer anything that requires "Always on" is pretty much a no go for me.

I sincerely hope it doesn't become the norm. See the reaction Microsoft had to the planned always on requirement for the X-Box One and how the public outcry forced them to re-think their idea.

Could always check youtube to see how many views the 777 video previews have had (about 16,000).

Or check the library to see what NGX addon has had the most downloads (5,192)

Or the 22,919 facebook likes for PMDG.

"Always-on" license verification has been a complete and utter failure throughout the market. I did a paper on software safeguards in a computer science class 2 years ago; doesn't work reliably, not a good thing for mobile users, and "unbelievably", a large portion of worldwide users don't have the capability to have internet running 100% of the time they need it.
