FTX Global Patch 1.10 out

Featured Replies

I'm game, post me a link where they said they would fix it on their list of fixes.

when the issue arose, they were looking into it.  found that they could not fix the issue short of redesigning the lights (and losing the frame rate gain)  the only solution is Steve Parson's upcoming DX10 fixer, and some basic patches that were supposed to be released by Steve when they're done.  ORBX issued a Mea Culpa about not testing with DX10, and have been communicating with Steve about it,  but they can't fix it, since it's a shader glitch with DX10 preview.

I have some problems with how it all went down,  mostly with saying flatout that it would work with DX10, not testing it, and finding out that it isn't.  But their response has been far better than other developers, who would have just flatly told you to go pound sand if you are looking for dx10 compatibility, or try to belittle you for using other than DX9.

This was directly on ORBX support forum when I was looking for a solution to get rid of the boxes.  Maybe I misread it to say that Steve was going to take care of it.    It's no biggy.  I'll just do their temporary fix to shut off all lights.   Sucks for night landing but most of my flights are daytime anyway so no huge loss but the cities sure do look pretty at night>  :D     Hopefully Steve's Super Mega Save the Universe fix that I am bouncing up and down and my chair waiting for will make more devs start supporting DX10.  My DX9 performance sucks goats on my super rig.    Smooth as glass since I switched to DX10 so I won't be going back to DX9 like... ever.   I prefer 30+ FPS 24/7 over a pretty airport.

I guess I'm running out of excuses to not buy this add-on.

I'm a totally Orbx newbie. Never owned or installed anything of their's. What's the procedure to purchase (link?) and install FTX Global with patches? Do I install the base and then the patch on top? The patch says FTX Central should be set to Global - Does FTX Central come with the Global install?

One thing you should be aware of is that FTXG makes changes to base FSX files which may cause problems with other scenery. They have (rather late) released an uninstall program, but I would highly recommend that you do a full system backup before you install, just in case. Apart from that health warning, I would certainly recommend it.

Exactly, agree 100%

Dick,

Do you know what kind of 'changes to base FSX files'...that sounds scary!

The DVD arrived and I have an important question if you know the answer:  I have GEX North America installed.  Should I uninstall it first before installing FTX-G?

I did, but before you uninstall it make sure to bring back stock FSX textures back from the GEX backup.

What is the downside of bringing back stock textures if one prefers GEX textures, do you know?  If it's so one can have access to stock textures I understand that, but if one would still prefer GEX in the event FTXG is uninstalled, would there be a downside?

I don't have chapter and verse to hand, although if you hunt around the various threads on FTXG on different forums you will pick up more detail. The only file I can recall offhand is lclookup.bgl, which (I believe) determines what texture is loaded for a given landclass. But there are others too. .Moreover, these files are not (or certainly were not) backed up by the FTXG installation process, so although you could restore your textures, you couldn't remove all traces of FTXG, unless you had a separate system backup to restore from. ORBX have now provided an un-install program, but I'm not sure how/whether that can restore the files that were not backed up in the first place. Hopefully they have changed the backup process too, so everything can now be backed up and restored, but I don't know that for sure.

Thanks for that--I do have a fresh clone of my OS/FSX disk so guess I'm ok!

One thing also too be aware of is that Orbx backs up all files it changes, so when uninstalling it all turns back to normal. (I have tested the uninstaller and it didn't cause any troubles at all)

The scare tactics from Nick N seems to have worked on the masses, smart move by him.

One thing that surprised me is that the uninstaller is 47MB (!!??). I haven't tested the uninstaller, but it seems that it will install files during the uninstall process. Files that might don't originate from your FSX setup prior to the FTXG installation. What files would that be? The readme-info have no details at all about what the uninstaller will do with what files. I don't like surprises, so I made a complete backup of FSX and all relevant config folders prior to installing FTXG 1.00 and 1.10.

I normally fly over the Scandinavian countries and northern Europe and have UTX Europe and GEX installed. I did find the FTXG textures a little too dark and over saturated. I also found the GEX fall textures and vegetation better than FTXG. The night lighting in FTXG is to yellow compared to the real sodium lighting. Good to have a full backup to revert back to my previous FSX version with UTX Europe and GEX.

I would appreciate if somebody could give some info on what the uninstaller will do and what files it replaces during the uninstall process. Obviously the uninstaller contains a lot of files that will be installed during the uninstall process.

An add on that alters FSX core files is dangerous if your'e not aware of what an installer will do. Agree?

How would you do if you had no uninstaller available and wanted to uninstall the FTXG? IMO Nicks warning and manual uninstall information, not provided by ORBX, has been very helpful to some community members. Agree?

ORBX have now, after several weeks after the release of FTX Global, published an uninstaller. But what does the uninstaller do? The uninstaller is over 47MB, which indicate that it will install files in FSX. What files would that be?

Sure I'm scared when installing add ons that alter FSX original files. No problem with UTX, GEX and other add ons. No problem with those when disabling or unsinstalling.

DISAGREE

I have almost every addon released for FSX to this date, and all those addons works perfectly in combination with FTX Regions and FTX Global in hybrid mode(UTX also under the hood).

Only scenery I can't get to work is France VFR(because of their custom autogen that they are not willing to share with Orbx) and Flytampa grenadines(they booth do the same you are critizising Orbx for doing). All others work excellent, even ES and 29 Palms with their custom autogen discriptions.

So out of hundreds of addons I have 2 sceneries that won't work, and I don't blame Orbx for that (the could have done the same as ES and 29 Palms did and it wouldn't be a problem)

So tell me what I should be scared off? Orbx hasn't screwed anything up on my system to this date, can't say the same about GEX(screwed up my setup bigtime, 1,5 years ago ended up in a reinstall, haven't touched it since).

So I say, I could't care less what Orbx are doing to the files in my install because I know it just works great. So no reason for me to dig into the technical aspects of it at all and be scared of things I don't have a clue about...

And no uninstaller argument is getting old, we have it now, what the f.... are we complaining about!!

(And yes it works, tested it the day it was released, didn't screw up anything on my system, and I have gazillions of other addons from other devs)
