Uninstalling UTX Help Wanted

Featured Replies

It is time for some of the great minds that reside here at Avsim to come together again to help with yet another problem; successfully uninstalling the Flight 1 UTX product line. With the release of Orbx FTXG, many found uninstalling GEX a no brainer. Now with Orbx Vector and it's world-wide coverage right around the corner (which completely replaces all UTX regions and cannot be used in conjunction with UTX) those that get Vector will want to uninstall UTX.

Some have asked over at the Orbx forum but JV has stated that they will provide no assistance with that and to ask at the Flight 1 forum. A thread was started there but no answer from anyone (as I expected). One user simply used the UTX uninstallers and wound up missing a core FSX file. See this from that user:

"I uninstalled UTX Europe and USA without any backups.

Now every time i open FTX central i get the following message:

Custom Files Validation Report

FSX file does not exist.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\Global\Texture\BridgeRoads.dds

I reinstalled FTX Global 1.0 then 1.1 but im still getting the message. This leads me to the following assumption: the file deleted is an FSX basic file?

The good thing is FSX is still opening normally and FTX central do the switches. But on the other side, does it mean the bridge roads textures disappeared over the globe?

I checked C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\Global\Texture\ and it seems there is a file BridgeRoads_lm which is stil there but i assume this is a different file then the one deleted."

So apparently the uninstaller is causing issues. So I know many do not want to reinstall FSX (me included). The question is, what should we manually back up from FSX "prior" to running the UTX uninstallers to prevent stuff like the above from happening? Does anyone have sufficient knowledge of what UTX changes are made in what folders to prevent community wide heartburn? This way if something gets deleted, we can manually put it back in. Avsim is really the only place we can come and get this kind of help. Many thanks in advance.

Hey Eric,

To avoid any risks of losing the core file, the safest (whilst not perfect) approach may be to simply;-

  • Deactivate all UTX areas using their "Ultimate Terrain Setup Tool" utilities. (Listed under 'START > All Programs > Flight 1 > Ultimate Terrain).
  • Delete all Ultimate Terrain entries in the Scenery Library.

Whilst this won't remove UTX from your Registry, it will remove any appearance of UTX whatsoever from you FSX world. (in readiness for FTX Vector).

Cheers.

I had this happen to me before...suffice it to say, I keep a backup of vanilla FSX on another hd. Simply copy and paste that file will solve that issue.

My only question, during UTX uninstall, at one point UTX asks something about reconfiguring terrain.cfg or something...sorry it has been awhile since doing this so I can't really remember exactly. I remember being somewhat confused as to what to select. Kind of a crap shoot. If someone could chime in for the proper procedures, that would be great.

It seems difficult to trouble shoot a problem that is being related second hand from "one user"?

Yes, if the terrain.cfg gets corrupt, that would not be good. I don't have a vanilla backup of that one.

All I can say is with UTX USA and Canada installed, that file is not affected at all on my system.

Yeah, especially without knowing the entire history of said user's computer from the time of install to uninstall.

If I might offer some generic advice to all those who might think the next, best thing is coming down the pipeline? UTX is based off of commercial data, at a cost to the developer to include in the product. The "next, best" may or may not include data of similar or better quality. I would invite anyone who is interested in removing their old, worn-out software to go and visit the X-Plane forum here and read the thread about getting better data for some small, inconsequential country called Canada, because the Open Street Map data is so poor. Where's the next, best get it's data from...? That's right, Open Street Map.

Now in some areas the data is very, very good. Notice the careful use of the term "some". So before you throw out the old, worn-out software you might wait to see what the next, best really is. Otherwise you might be back in here asking "How do I install the old, worn-out software again?"

I have the same issue as you OP - the UTX uninstaller deleted bridgeroads.dds on my system as well (even after UTX was deactivated first).

The other thing that folks seem to overlook is that the reason Allen doesn't have a UTX product for Asia, South America & Africa is because the commercially available geographical information system data for those areas are poor or incomplete.

I haven't deleted UTX yet. Waiting on Vector. I will make a backup of that file prior to uninstalling.

try running FSX repair. It will restore any default stuff that may have been deleted

its happened to me, i cannot remember 100% what i did when i googled the answer sometime back,  look in fsx/orbx/scripts/custom.eu find the file  bridgeroads.dds and copy it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\Global\Texture\BridgeRoads.dds.

i am certain i didn't do a fsx repair,

Hope this helps, i hate giving advice of which i'm not certain but i believe i did the above

My thoughts exactly. I'm puzzled by the unholy haste that some have to get UTX and other products off their systems on the mere promise of a new product from the folks down under. As a UTX user, I will surely keep an eye on OpenLC and Global Vector, and if the (more general) feedback is good I may well buy and  install them, but not before I have taken a full disk image of my existing system first !

Yep, this happened to me too. Holger at FTX was kind enough to send me a link to the bridge roads .dds file. I removed UTX as per the programs instructions too.
