Is anyone going back to FSX now after 2 days with P3Dv2?

Featured Replies

Yesterday I made a fresh install of Windows to update to 8.1, and now I have a fresh install in my system. Also format the second SSD (FSX) and now I'm testing P3D2 on it, but not sure what to do!

Stay in P3D2 and wait for fixes and addons support?

Or back to FSX with my addons and wait for P3D mature?

That's up to you. We can't decide that for you.

If it were me, my decision would be driven by the time and effort to get back to a well-tuned, fully loaded FSX installation.  In my case it would probably take me a whole week, and with P3D out now, for whatever it's current issues, I just wouldn't be willing to do that.  So, now that you've already gotten rid of FSX, and swapped for P3D, it might make sense to stick with it now and direct your efforts to that one if you deem the rebuilding of FSX a massive pain.

Exact reason why I have, and always had multiple HDD's, to run various sims at the same. I use BOTH! What abandon a sim Ive invested yrs worth of time and rescources on. Ill continue to use FSX for complicated aircraft while using V2 and waiting on and participating in its future development

Set up time (even if it's a few days) is nothing in the overall scheme of your enjoyment of the hobby.   If a sim weren't working well for me, I'd go back to the one that works well for me, even if it was a hassle, and  time consuming to get it all back working again.

You won't be happy sticking with a sim that's not working for you or giving you enjoyment, just because it's convenient not to have to re-install your old one.

I wouldn't blame anyone not having a good experience with P3D2 for going back to FSX, it's exactly what I'd do if it wasn't working well for me.

Well, for those having issues I hope you get them sorted, whether through LM's support or your own efforts.

One thing for sure.... A major change in how the sim works has taken place. The features that we now can look forward too in the area of graphics and performance are extremely promising.

Clearly at this juncture there remains challenges to kill remaining bugs, and also for folks

P3D2 work well for me, but I don't like it doesn't have the airplanes I fly like NGX, 777 or Q400... And much Aerosoft Airports...

I like the idea to back to FSX and wait for P3D mature, but... What if P3D matures fast? And the back to FSX isn't worth?

I've just landed in the Q400, from one Aerosoft airport to another, in P3D2.

I think you need to take a look at the Compatibility List - the Q400 works in P3D, as do almost all Aerosoft airports.  Some have issues with runway lighting, some don't and work perfectly.

Yes but I meant OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED. I'm a perfectionist man and don't like these things.. If not official supported, not install.

Oh well, that is of course your choice but the Q400 flies beautifully in P3D2.   It is not as FPS friendly as it is in FSX but it's still fantastic to fly in the new environment.

Any tricks to get the Q400 not to crash on exit of P3D?

X-Plane 12 and MSFS2020  🙂

System specs: Windows 11  Pro 64-bit, Ubuntu Linux 20.04 i7-13700KF  Gigabyte Z790 RTX-4060-Ti , 32GB RAM  1X 2TB M2 for X-Plane 12,  1x256GB SSD for OS. 1TB drive MSFS2020

Though the Q 400 and many other complex addons will fly in P3Dv2. There is a need to do some optimizing for the P3DV2 engine. Im seeing this in quite a few addons and LM has stated the same, Yes they work. But the textures, gauges textures etc need to be adjusted for the new graphics engine. My opinion why you see such a variations in performance from V2 to FSX/V1.4. BTW. in regardes to the Q400. Many reports of CTD's when changing liveries or clicking and opening the radio panel. Another need for optimization.

I really don't get why so many here as so unhappy with P3D v2. Personally, I thrilled that LM has taken on the task of making an actual successor to FSX.

Hi Arwen,

I'm thrilled, really, but not w/ the cost for the degree if issues w/ it.  I think the core engine has real promise, but there are some glaring basics needing addressed still.  For some odd reason very clearly related to the latest Estonia Migration Tool which I got impatient on so I could fly something other than the A36, my fabulous performance got cut in half!  I don't blame that on LM of course, but it caused me to just now uninstall V2.  I'll reinstall and start over w/ FTXG as things were fabulous.  Not sure what killed it but I know it had to do w/ Estonia.  Troubles seemed to happen when I tried changing to 4096 cloud textures just for fun at which point I started getting the black screen for the first time & it would take me out of AERO as FSX does, so I know it had to do w/ Estonia.

I am currently taking stock of the situation, and will think long and hard before deciding whether to purchase P3Dv2 or not. I am very tempted, but £140 is a lot of money to pay for a new flight simulator. That wouldn't be so bad if I knew that my current addons would all work, but they very probably will not. In addition, I am reasonably sure that my 1GB GeForce GTX 560Ti will not be up to the task of running P3Dv2 at a level of detail that I am happy with. That would mean forking out at least another £200, and suddenly things start to get out of control. It has made me ask myself......do I really need P3Dv2? Most of the time I do little more than take off and landing practice, and that's because these are the most interesting times in any flight. Cruising at 35000 feet for hours on end is not my idea of fun.

On the other hand, I really would like to sort out the VAS problem, be able to run AI @ 100% at the large airports without experiencing annoying stutters, and have those fancy shadows in the VC.

I think I need to take a step back at the moment, and just take stock of what I have. I can rapidly lose enthusiasm for flight simulation completely when I don't know which way to turn
