Is anyone going back to FSX now after 2 days with P3Dv2?

Featured Replies

Same here. I had reinstalled OS and cleaned everthing else for V2, but last night I've restored my system to a point before installation. I am going to enjoy my v1.4 for the time being and wait for the first service pack from LM. I want to support developer, so I am not going to request refund.

To be honest I REALLY want P3D 2.0 to succeed but just got the interesting crash below.  I have no way to make a meaningful judgement at this point but as I developer I would like to hold out for a brand new sim developed from the the ground up but that is just the dev in me talking.

The worst case scenario IMO is patching very old code with the expectation that it will work great on platforms that are light years beyond the original codebase.  Again that is just the dev in me talking.

This brings me to my next point - why would MS abandon a great franchise like FSX?  Is it because they knew that it would require a total rewrite to do correctly?  I want to answer yes and I 'm sure that backroom meetings at MS were going in this direction.  These low level meetings with ACES would have occurred even before the marketing gurus got involved so you can imagine what a fiasco those meetings with them would have been.

To be honest I feel like a beta tester for LM who by default MUST remain true to its strategic customers who are much bigger than us casual flight simmers.

Back to reality - FSX is running great with all my addons albeit without volumetric clouds but like the previous post indicates the things that P3D 2.0 adds add small value to us Flight simmers.

OK here is the silly P3D 2.0 crash message that was the cause of this rant and BTW it has to do with a C++ runtime call (unmanaged code). Once again as a .Net Dev I would like to see the new FS platform to be written using totally managed .Net code.

P3d v2 has only just began.. going to take at least half a year until it's ready for full immigration.

I went back to the dark side and will re evaluate after they do some patches. Just to many little things. I like where they are going but it is not for me now. Josh

LM has stated, in regards to OOM's and performance, that although addons worked in FSX, they made changes to V2 that may cause memory leaks  that weren't there in FSX and v1.4. I found that "Interesting". There on top of it.

"We EXHAUSTIVELY tested out of the box, and with several addon developers. However, some legacy addons that work just fine in FSX or 1.4 might cause crazy memory leaks in v2 - it's a possibility. They might also do things that used to be supported, and we might've missed something with backwards compatability. We're seeing a lot of OOMs reported with weather addons, so we'll partner with those devs and see what the culprit is and work to get it fixed. Same as we've done with scenery and aircraft devs too, it's a never ending cycle icon_smile.gif But a challenge we are excited to meet and are up to and work on every single day."

So in general  is it safe to say that P3D V2 is somehow what we would of had from MS if they were still working on FSX to fix bugs??? Im just asking i dont own P3D yet .....

I'm with you on that, and I paid the arguably appropriate price for V2 for me, $199.  That IS steep for such an unpolished release.  I'm leaning more on calling it an alpha release as even some very basic stuff hasn't been sorted out yet:

  1. Water textures that look as they should w/ DX10/11--they didn't need to create a whole full palette of water textures as you might find in a texture add-on like REX, just one full set that looked in a word, fabulous.  What I see now is a hugely awful water texture, starlight reflections in dawn/dusk time.  Is it a driver issue maybe?  Dunno, I have the 2nd to the current nV driver installed.
  2. That the sim 'loses focus' easily is a really rudimentary and significant issue, maybe an annoyance, but something that gets fixed in the alpha stage of development.
  3. nV driver overrides don't work in general, and in-sim FXAA is one step away from blurry, truly.       So you leave it off, and deal w/ marginal quality MSAA settings.
  4. The interface (please, someone, correct me fast!) puts you on the runway flying.  I think there might be a way to solve this but haven't tried hard yet.
  5. The blithering ATC window now is even larger than the default, discreet window in FSX.  My complaint about FSX's these days w/ large screens is not being able to resize it even smaller.  And bonus, it's not transparent, what?  Really?  Come on, really!
  6. Click-spot issue connected to loading the Default flight or some such basic screw up.
  7. Volumetric Fog:  wow, really enjoyed a flight heading up along the coast from KSBA>KSBP.  The fog blending w/ the Santa Ynez mountains looked just fabulous!  Only problem was--you can't fly over the blithering fog layer--fog from ground to the stratosphere that's pretty amazing-ugh!  I'm sorry, programming a soft cap for this had to have been done--as I say, looks *alpha* to me--still under basic development.  Please someone, tell me I'm wrong and how to fix this!

There are lots of very nice things happening in V2 for certain, and my performance has been fine as one would hope w/ the hardware I'm running.  But w/ this list of issues $199 is pretty much over the top.  I wouldn't mind it if I were helping a struggling new player--but LM is quite the opposite of that.  As the items above I feel are fixable w/in the 60D refund period this is indeed where I'm headed.  If all of these get resolved within that period I'll likely stay on board.   I DO very much like the HDR & tessellation effects and performance when truly set up as comparably as possible, for example putting Light Bloom and Ground Shadows on in FSX, is superior in V2 for certain.  Priority #1 for me is:  water.  Fix it, and fix it commensurate w/ the potential that should be present in DX11- textures.

I've gone back to P3D v1.4 until the issues with V2 are fixed. Biggest beef for me with V2 is the temperature bug, clouds in V2 bring my FPS way down, same cloud cover in P3D v1.4 has no FPS hit and I'm getting 40fps even with heavy rain or snow.  I'm tempted to upgrade my GTX680 to a 780 but I'm going hold back because I don't see myself spending $500+ on a new card when my GTX680 has no issues with FPS when it comes to FSX or P3D v1.4.

I really don't get why so many here as so unhappy with P3D v2. Personally, I thrilled that LM has taken on the task of making an actual successor to FSX. My guess is that many of you were expecting too much, too soon.  And many of you are trying to run P3D v2 at settings that are way too high for your PC, or are trying to use 3rd party addons that are not yet fully compatible with v.2 and when you get low frame rates, or an OOM crash, you blame P3D.

After struggling for years with FSX (and never being able to run it well at all on my old PC), I finally now have a system that can run P3D2 well. Yes, version 2.0 does have some bugs, but nearly every major release of any complex software has bugs.  And I'm confident that version 2.1 will fix most of them.  Until that happens, I'm going to keep flying P3D2, but with a minimal amount of addons (just FTX Global and A2A's Piper Cub), and with settings that give me plenty of performance overhead.

Tonight I flew Carenado's excellent Beechcraft Bonanza from Logan Airport [96CO], over Denver, and landed at Eagle County Regional Ariport [EGE], a distance of 117 miles.  And everything ran very well (my FPS were 40 plus for the entire flight), and I even saw my first two contrails (which I didn't even know were in this sim).

This statement is powerful IMO.

First defending their commitment of working hard to make it work. There is only so much you can do with beta and releasing to a gigantic amount of users with different PC scenarios, will unleash and find bugs.

2nd, is the admission of possibility of missing something. Lots of devs everywhere blame the user immediately and can never admit the problem might be on their end.

3rd Dynamic and observant. They see a big pattern developing with WX addons, and are taking the initiative to work with them all to sort through these issues.

4th Is another assurance that they have dedicated commitment. This is so reassuring for the future.  And the excitement and enthusiasm they have embracing not just corporate clients but simmers. They mentioned they appreciate the help that users are helping others on other forums (like avsim). Awesome.

Seems to back up what me and Brian discussed earlier today.. Just because an addon works doesn't mean it's compatible.  It's also a strange tone from LM.. For ages they've had a "If it's not default we don't care" take on their product.. Suddenly addons matter..

Still hoping and waiting for a worthy successor.

I fear you'll be waiting a long time.

+1       Brilliantly said Arwen.   You are 100% correct there.

I have mixed feelings at the moment. On my PC, P3D2 is so fast in some instances, it was quite unsettling!

To be sat at a UK2000 airport at max settings, autogen at max......panning around a complex virtual cockpit at 40+ FPS felt surreal after the pain of FSX these last 5+ whatever years, just downright weird and exhilerating at the same time

I added 100% Ultimate Traffic and it falls to a more predictable 20-25fps, more comparable to FSX. Is it fair to say P3D therefore doesn't outperform FSX? No, it doesn't IMO, because before adding that unsupported, unmodified, old addon, it far, far, far outperformed FSX

But as to whether it's in a position to migrate to right now? for a lot of people I would say no

People are so used to pushing their CPU so hard to get FSX working, it's a complete change of mindset now to suddenly switch to P3D and see your sim not make a massive leap because you perhaps don't have the appropriate graphics card to take advantage of it

But for the future, P3D is IMO undoubtedly the way forward. It demonstrably DOES make use of high end graphics cards, which is surely what everyone wanted.

It also has bugs that will be ironed out in a service pack, so right now it probably isn't in a position to replace FSX for everyone, even those with higher spec GPUs who can get better performance.

But for me it's a revelation, it's a platform that now finally has a future.

It's not fair to judge P3D on it's performance with FSX addons, P3D needs people coding addons with just that sim in mind now, and it's preference for a high spec GPU

So IMO, P3D is not yet ready, and even after a service pack, it's only going to be appropriate for you if (a) you are prepared to invest in a high end GPU, and ( B) 3rd party developers can start releasing P3D2 optimized versions of their addons

As it stands, I won't be going back. I can't get FSX to do what P3D2 can do on my system, and that's out of the box. It seems to be able to load textures much faster, faster than I could ever achieve in FSX even with everything biased toward texture loading (which would just cause huge stutters). Yes at the moment it seems to be very buggy (but then I'm playing around with freeware planes that are perhaps not fully compatible) so we're really still in the beta stage. But that's fine with me as I know it's all being worked on and in the not too distant future we'll have a much more stable system with a lot of these issues sorted out.
