When I Got Into Flight Sims This Was State-of-the-art

Featured Replies

After looking up items for sale on ebay I came across a Spitfire sim for the Spectrum 48, this was really sate of the art when I got into flight sims ...

Not quite A2A or COD!!

Enjoy

Yeah, I was a bit later in with FS2 on the Atari ST.

For me the big break was FS98 at which point I realised that one day we would be flying over photoscenery from sat images with much more realism one day.

Now with FSX, Tileproxy, loads of photoscenery (some free and some pay), a few bits of payware and lots of tweaking we now have what I envisaged.

I like to try to imagine what the FS world may look like in another 10 years from now - anyone like to make any suggestions as to what we will be using and what it will look like/behave like?

I was FS5 in the mid 90's. It was mind blowing.

Around the same period but started with FS4 and it was great  B)

I wonder how much realistically further we can go (assuming a proper developer begins work on a new platform, not rehashing an old one). I think the BIG aim now is stability and code which can properly utilise the hardware on the market without tweaks and OC's and other nonsense. I'd be happy with current visuals and functionality for at least a decade now if it were to be stable as hell and smooth.

I remember a lot of these earlier flight sims.  FS2.0/Jet and Sid Meier's F-15 Strike Eagle got me interested in Flight Simulation

Flew this alot on the massive 48k version, i think REX and ORBX could learn a lot from this, also MilViz's F15 is nothing compared to this stunner ...

I then learnt to fly the AH64 Gunship, she was a stunner and packed a punch, the auto gen was stunning ... No poping trees trees here.

Loading times .. 3-5 mins via a cassete tape player and then i bought the 128k player with a built in tape player ... The BluRay of its time ... God we knew how to live in the 80's ... With those dodgy mullet hair cuts and 'adult themed' actors tash!!

FSGenesis could learn from this mesh!

Is that what that looked like?  I was asking to get that for Christmas one year, but I never did, and was very dissapointed.  I think the reason was that it took 128k and I only had 64.  Or am I thinking of a Microprose game that came sometime later?

I guess those are mountains?  Wow, that's an eye opener.

Oh the memories. TRS80s in the computer room.

This was the beginning for me ... Sublogic and Bruce Artwick.   Really too bad Meigs Field is gone. Its iconic to flight simulator.

This thread should be pinned for all those that think the graphics suck today.

Fighter Pilot (F15) and Tomahawk (AH64) were Microprose and worked on the 48k and up, Tomahawk was stunning as it had sounds which Fighter Pilot didnt, i think later they were more cross platform in later versions but i might be wrong.

You didnt miss much by not getting Tomahawk but it was streets ahead of Fighter Pilot.

I then got an Amega and progressed to ... The mighty Tornado.

This was truly stunning and gave me hours and hours of pleasure, so much to it, front and rear seats with fully operating weapons inc laser guided bombs
