January 1, 201412 yr "Hi Clutch...I have the same cards (in SLI) how exactly did you 'tune' them for performance? I would be very keen to know this... any help would be appreciate!" When I say I tuned, I meant my P3D setup in general, not the 670. I am seeing 60's fps more often than I ever did in P3Dv1 (and never saw them in FSX), which mean when I load up 3rd party stuff I get high 20's and 30's much of the time. Mostly done through Nvidia Inspector and matching up my sliders. Only addition to my .cfg file is the Affinity mask=14. January 1, 201412 yr FSX is CPU limited not GPU limited, unless you are running three screens in surround mode and even then you aren't likely to see much difference.
January 1, 201412 yr FSX is CPU limited not GPU limited, unless you are running three screens in surround mode and even then you aren't likely to see much difference. But the bufferpools tweak does make a difference hence more memory on the video the better. I've tested this tweak to see the difference and what I've noticed without this tweak is I get around 30fps, with this tweak I get around 45fps.
January 2, 201412 yr J, 1) There should not be any need to do anything except a straight plus and play. Possibly do a Windows Updater for the latest drivers when you are up and running. 2) No I don't think you are missing anything applicable to FS. Cheers, Mac Cheers, Mac

January 2, 201412 yr I needed to get rid of some money before the end of the year (in order to pay less taxes in 2015) so one thing I did was buy a GTX780. I decided this was a good moment for it and you can wait forever if you want to get the next best GPU... The GTX780Ti was still too expensive for the little extra performance it gives... Thursday I hopefully will be able to install it into my PC. Looking forward to letting you all know how good (or bad) things are with the GTX780 compared to my current GTX580! Have a look at my new baby here: https://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX780DC2OC3GD5/ From what I've read it's an easy to OC GPU so I might even get close to those Ti-speeds anyway. ^_^ Hey Jaroen, the next time you need ideas for disposing of any monetary allowances, please consider forwarding some to my paypal account. January 3, 201412 yr Received the GTX780 yesterday. Installed it. Tested it. Uninstalled it and it will be going back to the shop today. Seems I am not satisfied THAT easily LOL!!! There was a difference, of course, and rather obvious in certain situations, but it certainly was not a 450 euro difference…! My plan is to wait for the next generation of GPU's (nVidia 8xx) and then I will probably get a complete new system instead of just a new GPU. My PC is 3 years old now: in the past I often bought a new PC every 2 years so by the time those new GPU's will arrive, it's about time to get a new PC. ^_^ I think a new CPU, a slightly faster PCI bus and faster RAM will certainly make a difference too. And I want that GPU to have more RAM onboard, at least 4 GB. By then the first updates of P3D 2.0 will also have arrived and I sure can use a few fixes. Imho the memory system is flawed and not working as it should (getting way to many OOMs while I never had OOMs with FSX, using a LOT more add ons too). But anyway, the difference in performance wasn't worth the money at all so bye bye GTX780 and hello again GTX580. I will be flying on a low profile until at least that 2.05 update has been released: no more spending money on new add ons for me right now (ASN and OpenLC will have to wait) and no more testing but only simply enjoying a short flight every now and then. ^_^

January 3, 201412 yr As i said before FSX is CPU limited not GPU. I am using P3D 2.0. ^_^ That was obvious when I started this topic in the P3D v2 forum but the topic has been moved so now that isn't so obvious anymore. I would never ever have bought a new GPU for FSX! ^_^
January 3, 201412 yr What exactly were the gains? Did you record any FPS numbers, and what settings did you manage to increase while having the same performance as your GTX 580? I find it a little hard to believe that the difference between the GTX 580 and the GTX 780 was marginal. Take a look at this (comparison between the GTX 580 and the GTX 780), and the difference is huge: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/767?vs=827 I'm thinking that maybe your GTX 780 wasn't running at its full potential. Did you disable all power saving options? Did you try a benchmark like 3DMark? Anyway, I agree that you should wait for Maxwell. It will come out in March, it's not that far away.
January 3, 201412 yr Benchmarks mean nothing when it comes to P3D. They mean a bit more than they did with FSX, but still, P3D isn't a regular game. I managed to enable Volumetric fog and Buildings shadows but that already resulted in a lower fps than my limit of 34 which I was hoping to maintain +30 fps. Of course this depended on the situation. Adding more autogen had an immediate impact too and so did adding reflections or a higher water quality. In fact, almost everything I added had an effect. Obviously when I used my GTX580 settings, things were okay but even then I couldn't maintain my desired +30 fps. BTW I didn't say the differences were marginal...? I even said it was "rather obvious in certain situations". In one certain situation, which very heavy weather, lots of (Very dense) autogen, the fps difference was almost 10 (GTX580: around 16, GTX780 around 26), so that IS a remarkable difference of more than 50%! But that was with various extra settings enabled with that GTX580 already. With my current GTX580 settings I also get an fps of around 26 there. The fact is that 450 euro is a lot to pay for Volumetric fog and Building shadows... add more settings and fps became low twenties. Performance overall was smooth, even at 25 of course, but since I was only using FTXG and the A2A C172 and fps was 25 that means there isn't much (if any) overhead for when I add ASN or some other addons. It's all too much still on the edge. Besides, I also want to see what 2.05 does, specially if it handles memory better. At one moment I flew around my heavy scenario and noticed VAS was already 3.6... again, without a weather addon, even without AI...! Maybe I should have waited with getting the GTX780 until 2.05 had been released but as I said in the OP, I needed to get rid of some money. ^_^ All in all the differences weren't worth 450 euro's to me. For that kind of money I want to be able to enable a few more options (water, effects, shadows) and still keep fps at 30. Problem is that adding those extra options increases VAS so I am even beginning to wonder if upgrading my PC for P3D is worth it at ALL because what's the use if I can enable some options if VAS is preventing me from doing so anyway...? EDITI had nVidia Inspector and Process Explorer open to check the speeds and usage of the GTX780 and the card clearly wasn't idling along!
January 3, 201412 yr I am using P3D 2.0. ^_^ That was obvious when I started this topic in the P3D v2 forum but the topic has been moved so now that isn't so obvious anymore. I would never ever have bought a new GPU for FSX! ^_^ Make no difference P3D 2.0 or FSX.
January 3, 201412 yr Make no difference P3D 2.0 or FSX. I think you are mistaken... ^_^ BTW A nice side effect of all fooling around with the GPU's is that suddenly now the NI trick with Bioshock and that specific AA mode now actually works with my GTX580 too! I couldn't get it working before and I got it working with the GTX780. It was one of the things that made me doubt what to do. So I was quite happy to see it now still works with the GTX580! Don't know what causes this (reinstall of drivers? plugging the card out and it?) but it's a nice bonus. Obviously the higher SGSS hurts performance a little but not so much that I notice it. AA is a lot better now, getting close to what I was used to with FSX.
