[P3D] Bought a GTX780 after all

Featured Replies

Yea, those sexy heatpipes!   Decided to hold off on a new card until I see what the first update offers.  I am actually getting really good performance after tuning with my EVGA GTX670 2GB.

Hi Clutch...I have the same cards (in SLI) how exactly did you 'tune' them for performance? I would be very keen to know this... any help would be appreciate!

Cheers mate

Doug

I don't know about Jeroen, but in my case all hardware and software is recorded as a legitimate business expense for my home-based business...

+1  My primary use of computer is for work purposes (I'm in IT and work from home), so upgrades are tax deductible.

Let us know how P3D runs on it!

My GTX780 Ti didn't run Prepar3d very well... As soon as I added FTX Global, bang... Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Looks like I'll have to go back to work to avoid stuff like this....$500-600 for this card by my price shopping.

Welcome to the 780 club, but as Alec said it's still no miracle GPU that will make P3DV2 run flawless on max.

I feel we are limited by LMs software optimization for now.

Thanks for the welcome. ^_^

Right now I get my max of 34 fps in most places I usually fly but in some it drops: if I can prevent that from happening, I'll be quite happy already. Of course I am hoping that I can now start using a few extra options without a performance penalty (Volumetric fog, building shadows, some extra autogen), but I am starting with low expectations. I was in the fortunate situation that I could buy that card without having to cut down on daily meals so... I'll be satisfied quite easily. ^_^

Can you post your settings?

Looks like we are running the same level of firepower for P3DV2

As a "dual member" of the 780 club I strongly recommend that you set the NVIDIA Inspector settings in accordance with this thread, which can also be found somewhere on these forums. Made a BIG difference to my rig. SLI NOT enabled

PS: I pinched the kids inheritance.

Cheers, Mac

I was already planning on using those NI settings (not those P3D v2 settings btw!!!). I'll use 4xSGSS though and 16 anisotropic. That trick with Bioshock and that special AA mode doesn't work at ALL with my GTX580: hopefully it will with the GTX780 because AA outside of the airplane is pretty bad right now.

BTW I was wondering (although this is getting a bit OT for this forum: maybe a mod can move this topic to the hardware forum?):

1. should I uninstall the nVidia driver before unplugging the GTX580 in installing the GTX780? They use the exact same driver so that doesn't seem necessary. I was planning of simply switching cards and that's it. (Of course I will also delete the shaders cache and I will also start with a brand new Prepar3d.cfg!)

2. I always do a custom install of the nVidia driver and deselect everything apart from the actual graphics driver: I don't need all that 3D, sound, center and physx stuff. Do you install all that stuff? Am I missing something when I don't?

These are my current settings. MipMap for VC panels is off because of the A2A C172 (which otherwise will give a CTD when you switch screenmodes) and Leisure boats are at 10% because of a P3D v2 bug.

I took the plunge and upgraded my GTX680 to a GTX780 and my FPS got bumped up by 5-10% in FSX, in P3D V2 I saw a nice bump in FPS when flying through the clouds but other than that I didn't see much of a difference. Was the upgrade really worth the money for a small bump in FSX? No because my GTX680 was doing fine when it came to FSX but the card does seem much smoother when it comes to P3D V2. I might return the card and wait until the rumored GTX 880 comes out.

I'm in the same boat. I just upgraded from a GTX480 to a GTX770 4GB. I've seen very little performance boost in FSX with this card. I'm tempted to send it back but my GTX 480 is more than 3 years old so ho much longer will it last? I also play Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 and I have seen better performance with those titles. I have until the end of January to send it back. I'm probably going to hang on to this card waiting to see what happens with P3Dv2. I know my GTX 480 won't run it.

The settings you posted (except for volumetric fog and AI traffic) are actually higher than I have on my rig which is a [email protected] with a GeForce 780. I run with 4SGSS and 16x anisotropic filtering with the bioshock option in Nvidia Inspector. Forget above 60 frames per second in some scenarios, but at complex airports, with lots of clouds and a complex add-on like the majestic dash it can drop to the mid-20s. I have not looked the frame rate, and I use adaptive vsync set in Nvidia inspector.

"Hi Clutch...I have the same cards (in SLI) how exactly did you 'tune' them for performance? I would be very keen to know this... any help would be appreciate!"

When I say I tuned, I meant my P3D setup in general, not the 670.  I am seeing 60's fps more often than I ever did in P3Dv1 (and never saw them in FSX), which mean when I load up 3rd party stuff I get high 20's and 30's much of the time.  Mostly done through Nvidia Inspector and matching up my sliders.  Only addition to my .cfg file is the Affinity mask=14.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

I'm running Dense autogen and medium shadows w/all options ticked no cloud reflections

No FXAA

No Lense Flare

Everything else maxxed.

FPS locked at 34 lowest drop I've seen was 21 FPS.

No hardware forced AA Inspector options though.

Stays pegged at 34FPS most of the time once I take off from a dense complex airport.

Without FPS limiter I can get a very consistent 40-65FPS but with microstutter.

Only addons are  Rex4 and FTXG
