What do you consider as essential addons for XPX?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've recently acquired some hardware and XPX, trying to see whether I can make a move to XPX.  However, I have the basic package installed and loaded up to see a default aircraft screen, very "defaultish".  Just wondering for you experienced XPXers out there, what do you consider as essential addons for XPX that one should get to best enhance performance and graphics quality of XPX?

I am a long time user of FSX, to illustrate what I mean, the essential addons I cannot go without for FSX is EZCA, AS(N or 2012), REX, FSGlobal and Orbx Global.  From there on, aircraft and specific location sceneries are further additions to that.

Thanks in advanced,

Brendan Chen

Any weather engine, lighting and/or global texture enhancement packages available?

Just had a look at HD Mesh Pro.  Looks good, but unfortunately there's no Asia or Australia.  NZ looks nice though!  Also if I may append another question onto this, do you (any XPlane users) feel that at this stage, is XP more suited for VFR/light aircraft simulation?  Or both light and heavy tubeliners like the recent 727s and 757s?

Having made the shift to XPX recently I can suggest (at least this is what I have now)

for scenery

SKYMAXPRO for weather

URBAN TEXTURE EXTREME for ground texture

SIMHEAVEN photoreal + H2 meshes (providing you have enough RAM and VRAM)

SIMHEAVEN OSM DATA + AUTOGEN

for aircraft

CARENADO C90B KING AIR

A320 by JAR Design (not yet in my fleet but strongly suggested by many)

ROLLON CRJ 200 (same as above)

for AI

WORLD TRAFFIC (still configuring, not that easy as My Traffic or UT2)

free plugins

PILOT VIEW for using TrackIR with custom views (like Ezdok)

then feel free to check free and payware airports and addons at X-AVIATION or PLANE.ORG

I'm still exploring, it really depends where you like to fly, since I mostly fly in Europe MADEIRA, MILANO MALPENSA, the PARIS area, WIEN, MUNICH, DUBLIN are some must have. Quite curious to check new tahiti and polinesia islands scenery, if only I had more time...

And yes XPX as it stans now it's better for below 18k flight, with IVAO/VATSIM ATC rather than the program one

SkyMAXX Pro actually increases performance big time. And it looks amazing.

I suggest you get UrbanMaxx too, it's only $8 but the difference between it and the default scenery is incredible.

Addons:

SkyMaxxPro for weather (Absolute Essential)

Headshake (Free from simcoders.com, provides camera effects)

Seatraffic (Free on X-Plane, provides real sea/marine traffic)

Aircraft:

Anything from Carenado/Alabeo. My favorites being the C90B King Air and Cessna 152.

The Saab from x-aviation.com

Scenery

Andras's HD Mesh v2 (donationware from www.alpilotx.net)

Simheaven's photo and OSM scenery (donationware from www.simheaven.com)

fs2xplane to convert some sceneries over from FSX to X-Plane.

Did I mention, Skymaxx Pro ;-) This really changed the sim experience for me.

With skymaxx that means you won't need to apply any tweaks?  Or is XPX just a tweak-free program?

I haven't needed to. It gives a huge performance increase for me when using this (as opposed to the default clouds in X-Plane).

Sorry I am not a native speaker

------

With SkyMaxxPro I believe you still need to tweak some of the features you want, according to your hardware. It's like a weather enhancement programme IMHO. You will find a UI of SMP inside the game where you can choose/tweak how it draws the weather.

------

Then something about the add-on planes:

JarDesign's A320neo is a great plane, lacking some features (like ALTN Route) but enough for a normal flight operation;

Peter's A320/A321 series feature great FBW system but without most of the decent eye-candies (I mean 3D cockpit and FMGC)

I would like to give 4.999/5 to FlightFactor's 777 and 757, which have deep system simulation. Not only because they are the top-class add-on planes for XPX at present, but they also shows what XPX can simulate, to a really high standard. If I could find PMDG-quality textures in their cockpits, I will give those two planes a 5/5.:-P

I don't have the LES Saab 340A so I cannot judge it. But I see lots of positive comments on it.

Also the coming 737Classic by IXEG looks very promising.

------

Sceneries:

Beti-X Stewart - simply FANTASTIC! Also airports from Truscenery are great.

Also lots of freeware sceneries on major XPX portals like x-plane.org, x-pilot.com and smaller ones like xpfr.org

Noted thanks.  Any good global texture enhancements for the world rather than just EU and US?  I know NZ is there, but I mainly operate in OZ and Asia, anything for there at all?

Plane wise I have the PA38 on the queue and the 757.  No one had made any mention of FlyJSim 727 yet, not that good?

And is SMP a weather engine as well or just weather textures?

AFAIK there is no global texture enhancements for XPX, unlike Orbx FTX Global for FSX. I came across Maxx-XP Series some time ago - they are enhancements for particular textures, like urbanMaxx for urban textures, something like that.

About the 727. One of the best 3D cockpit effects in XPX addons IMO. I am not a RL pilot but the feel of flying 727 is simple, direct and smooth. No custom FMC for 727, but a 10$ INS plugin is available.

And is SMP a weather engine as well or just weather textures?

Edit: From my knowledge, SMP features a custom weather engine (named Silverlining?) which override the default XPX weather engine. What's more the custom engine don't apply XPX stock cloud/puff textures, but textures in the Silverlight folder itself instead.Thank you ohsirus for your info about the SMP :drinks: . More info can be found here

Hope words above could do some help.

With Xplane the only commercial tweaks I would get is SkyMaxxPro (NOT a weather engine, but a better cloud engine) and UrbannMaxx Pro.

XPX has a built in EZ Dock system.

For planes I would get either the 757 or Jar's A320 for the heavies.

I would populate your favorite Airports next.

Thanks for these steps, very useful :)

Any decent Chinese airports out there?  Or are there a central place where I can see a list of airports?  For generic above average airports for FSX I would usually look at ORBX or Aerosoft, what's the equivalent in XPX?

I apologise if by using a direct comparison with FSX annoys anyone, but that's the only way I can think of that I can try to get my message across, please forgive me.

PS: Would you say JAR A320 would be at the same level as Airbus Evo (the newest one) from aerosoft or better?
