Fundamentally incorrect as far as you are concerned, However for myself and many others we shake our heads in disbelief that a modern flight simulator lacks these basic features.

As for Vatsim, tried it, not enough ATC coverage on the times that I am able to fly.

I prefer Radar Contact and Airports full of Ai courtesy of MyTraffic X.

Once Xplane has these things available I will give it another go, Empty skies and airports make it seem like a deserted world apart from the car traffic.

It is indicative of Austins strange priorities for his flight simulator that he feels highway traffic is more important than Air traffic.

Anyway each to their own, enjoy whatever Sim you like.

X-Plane does have air traffic, you can set multiple aircraft arriving and departing, maybe not real life schedules but if you are sitting in the cockpit of your real airbus or boeing do you know where the next in line for take off is heading? As for the traffic, I like nothing better than a dusk approach across a busy freeway with lights everywhere and a real sense of movement. I would rather that than seeing BA 001 taking of from a distant runway heading to New York, a six hour journey whose has about 1 minute's relevance to my own flight.

"Each to their own" I agree, so remind me what are you doing here?

So typical of the Xplane community, unwelcoming and defensive

Unless I am mistaken I am using Avsim, something I have been doing far longer than you.

Actually I have been around a lot longer than my current profile. You are the one coming to an X-Plane forum and criticizing our chosen platform.

"Without good ATC and Ai traffic, Xplane is never going to be of interest for Airliner flying."

Now three little words would have made that entire statement seem a lot less hostile. "In my opinion" Unless of course your opinion is so high it is weighted above everyone else's.

Actually I like the enthusiasm people show here on these torums.

But it seems, as if one has to be a FSX´er or X-Plane´er, just like most people are fan of just one particular, lets say, soccer team.

Why is that? They can coexist, believe it or not! I have them both installed, and yet, my PC has not gone up in flames.

Isn´t it beautiful to have the choice? As always in life, there is not THE single truth and possible anwer, right?

And now gents, go flying! ;-)

As a member of the x-plane community, payware add on community, I'm offended by your shallow statement and am going to tell you that you are wrong.  The X-Plane community ALWAYS welcome people who are interested to know more about it.  And we go out of our way to help those people.

If you decide to use avsim to come into certain forums and start slapping people around, expect to be slapped back.

mad dog,

I understand your frustration with some of the limitations in X-Plane 10. Even we X-Plane 10 users are looking forward to see better ATC, AI, etc...

The truth is that X-plane 10 has an active team dveloping it. It's probably too small for the amount of work, but they're doing their best, and the upcoming 10.30 will probably bring good news.  Add to this the contribution from 3pds, and I believe that, with time, X-plane 10 is becoming an excellent platform for all kinds of flight simulation.

I really hope that you may end up finding good reasons to adopt it  too.

I hope so too, those two Items are all that is holding me back from giving Xplane a place on my hard drive.

Probably a lot more like me that would move over from FSX if Laminar would improve on these areas.

But Austin seems unable to see that. but it's his toybox, he could own the Civilian flight sim market if he wanted to but seems to have a different slant on flight simulation that the majority of folks.

I truly believe Austin's perspective is adapting to the new realities.

I sometimes send him shots of the Poll of Wishes for 2014 and he acknowledges it. I guess the TODO list must now be huge... and I really don't think we should exert pressure - they're aware of what must be done, and I am almost sure the next releases will show that :-)

Hmmm... Are you suggesting default X-Plane should have those features that are available in FSX only as payware?

However there is a traffic (+basic ATC) add-on for X-Plane, it's called "World Traffic":

"Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

Which ever way it gets them I don't really mind as long as they eventually arrive.

FSX had those by default and they were then improved further by the third party devs.

That is the way Austin should be going,  his plan for 20 Ai aircraft with full realistic airfiles is not the way forward.

Thanks for that link, very interesting and a step forward, but I don't see any ATC aspect to WorldTraffic or am I missing something ?

World Traffic is not limited to 20 aircrafts, so that limitation can be circumvented by add-ons like this.

I think World Traffic (I don't have it) has a very basic ATC, from the features list:

  • Simple ATC system to allow you to interact with the World Traffic application so that it is aware of your position and can vector you and and assign you arrival/departure runways.

However it's true that AI and ATC need improvements, but I think add-ons like this prove that 3rd parties can do it. The problem is, as always, the smaller selling numbers of X-Plane compared to FSX. I think MyTraffic X required significant development resources to implement the 800.000 daily flights, and hence large selling numbers would be needed to justify it.

"Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

And the smaller selling numbers are linked to missing or under developed features that a lot of simmers expect to see.

MyTraffic X is the product of one man working alone, mind you I don't think he actually sleeps.

World traffic is a nice idea only partially implemented. Imagine MyTraffic X without aircraft models and flight plans and you get the idea. It should now be passed over to a team such as Justflight or Aerosoft with the resources to add those missing parts to make it like MyTraffic or TrafficX. (Trouble is I don't think either of those is interested in XP anymore)

In fact the models in the X-CSL package would be a good basis, so it would just need a team to create all those schedules. Personally I'd be happy with some "plausible" traffic.

FSX and X plane can coexist. I am on an xplane high right now but I came from fsx. They are different but doing an ILS approach at night is really something special in XPX.

I could shake my head in disbelief at you and say something like "typical of the FSX community" because you just criticized vanilla X-Plane by comparing it to FSX with two add ons.

Without AI traffic add ons and ATC add ons I doubt very much that what FSX offers with respect to ATC would be satisfactory. As it stands even with RC you can't do SIDs and STARs which makes all traffic over major hubs completely unrealistic. Also, simply saying "oh I tried VATSIM, not good enough" is pretty silly when there are countless users of FSX and X Plane who only fly on VATSIM because they think even RCv4 and add on traffic is boring and soulless because there are no humans. There are different needs and value judgments for simming.

I used to be an offline only player, then I got into VATSIM, now I just can't stand offline flying. I did a VATSIM flight then went to do an offline one. My departure had a vector in it and because I didn't turn of my own accord fast enough RCv4 barked at me, but on VATSIM I would have been vectored by a human. I lost all immersion when I suddenly was fighting RC, later in the same flight I apparently bypassed a waypoint because of that non existent vectoring and had to request direct to avoid RC forcing me to turn around 180'.

I'm pretty much done with offline simming. Its completely not immersive compared to having a human giving you spacing restrictions during busy events where you can see the human pilot in front of you. For someone who thinks like me, and there are quite a few of us, the future of X Plane is promising.

Also, what is missing... well right now there aren't that many people making payware add ons are there, not compared to FSX. FSX is 100% reliant on after market products for playability. Maybe X Plane will cater to your needs once enough people play it to attract the developers of the kind of content that you already require to make your FSX experience satisfactory.

Kind of chicken and egg at this point.
