An Interesting Future for Outerra

Hmmmmm...... I'm almost desperate to see what a Nvidia 780 or titan could do with this engine....

  • Well, Outerra has had only one variety of flora (pines) for quite some time, but have little birdies seen the future?

  • I think of it this way: there are two approaches to making a sim, particularly a flight sim. One is you make the planes and the things that go with the planes, and paste a somewhat satisfactory sketch

Outerra user M7 presents a flight over Middle Earth, an alternate world created in Outerra by the Middle Earth Digital Elevation Project. http://www.me-dem.me.uk/

Ha ha, that's brilliant, I never knew that existed. Now if Frodo had only got his PPL, it would have made his trip to Mordor much easier

These are great videos and screenshots here ... by the ways:

Are they also available at the vidoes and screenshots section here at the forums - so that they may also reach a wider audience? I mean - these vids and captures are great and certainly deserve to be also shown to a wider audience - every now and then at least and so to also make the potential of Outerra getting known even better

Enjoy flying and happy landings.

nice video ! Btw I have been wanting to make a video for a while but I can't get Fraps or Nvidia shadowplay to work. Is there something I am missing ? The in-built recorder works and records but when I open the video file it just shows green noise all over the video.

They certainly should be. The more exposure this project gets the better.

Stunning video, the sense of depth on a 2D display is remarkable. Imagine this with clouds and more varied scenery below

Fraps doesn't seem to work, and I had no luck with shadowplay. Its hard to find things that work with openGl and besides that, Outerra is programmed to block anything from injecting into its process in the first place.

The problem with the built-in recorder is something you should question in the Outerra forum.

What I ordinarily do is end the recording and then quit Outerra. I then receive a popup asking do I want to convert the video. When I click yes, The process converts the video to a more readable format and that's it. Done.

I already do Imagine that!  B)

Also, one of the attractions of Outerra is that with this technology, roads, airports and other terrain features are organic parts of the scenery, not foreign objects placed across a landclass jigsaw puzzle. The difference that will make to the sense of realism, being there, and the suspension of disbelief will be enormous!

Nvidia Shadowplay should work, as it captures frames off the GPU directly. By default Outerra blocks apps that capture video frames, because they do not play nicely with modern OpenGL and with our asynchronous rendering pipeline. If you run outerra.exe with -allowext command line argument, it will allow Fraps and other apps to work, but you may get various artifacts and/or crashes.

The built-in recorder compresses the video only lightly in the first capture phase, and so sometimes hard disk drive can't keep up recording the amount of data. A SSD would work, but .. it's a lot of data. We'll probably have to add another intermediate compression step there.

Brano Kemen, Outerra

I tried shadowplay with the -allowext command a week or so ago and Outerra went all spastic on me while the framerate tanked. I was discouraged, but now I'll try again.

Whoops! Meant to say fraps. Still messing with shadowplay.

Sorry I am a noob at this but how does this -allowext command works actually?

It's a command line argument, when you launch outerra.exe from the command line. But you can also right click on Anteworld shortcut, select properties, then in the Shortcut tab add -allowext into Target, after outerra.exe

I tried adding allowext in the shortcut tab but it says that bla bla specified in the target box is not valid, make sure that the path and file name are correct.

Does the shortcut work without the -allowext added?
