An Interesting Future for Outerra

  • Well, Outerra has had only one variety of flora (pines) for quite some time, but have little birdies seen the future?

  • I think of it this way: there are two approaches to making a sim, particularly a flight sim. One is you make the planes and the things that go with the planes, and paste a somewhat satisfactory sketch

Out of interest are there any other groups showing such interest in Outtera as us flight simmers? To me it seems as if we are keenest for it to flourish :D

I asked this at the Outerra forum a while ago. Seems that because of the inclusion of JSBSIM and the ability to add runways at will, we have a leg up on obvious Outerra functionality. The train fans would probably love the ability to lay track at will, and if they could, I'm pretty sure there would be rolling stock coming out of our noses.

The boat guys have not been heard from at all really, even though Outerra has some obvious opportunities there.......

The car/truck fans have had some good traction as well, but probably need some updates to keep vehicles from launching into the air and doing other strange things due to incomplete collision physics.

Seems like for now its gonna be us and the Car/Truck guys.

By the way, if you want to play around, that script editor for vehicle physics can be opened through alt+e, after you enter the vehicle. (be careful messing with that!!!)

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

See the thing that really interests me about Outerra is i am not just a flightsimmer, I sail, drive, fly, even try and walk around in FSX. In addition to FS addons, I do/have done addons for many other games/communities, including EA, Maxis, ubisoft, etc.

This is a small part of an addon I am working on for FSX/P3D that I think would be wicked cool in Outerra, especially since it could involve several different modes of movement in Outerra, walking, driving (Abrams, HUMMV, Bradley, Stryker), sailing (combat zodiac), and flying. I am just waiting on a new video card since I doubt my current one would be sufficient for Outerra use.

I mentioned possibilities like these (multiple activities) and got a pretty cool reception to the concept! But I think its going to be intrinsic to the Outerra engine. I could easily see taking a plane someplace, then driving out to the shore, hopping on a boat and doing some fishing or diving before heading back. For somebody whose sole interest is planes, planes and more planes, I'm obviously going to be talking gibberish.

I think its going to become about the total world experience of choice, and these detailed graphics will drive it home. On a lark, I took Up the hot air balloon yesterday, and was surprised to feel an actual sense of vertigo as the thing got higher and higher. I can't even imagine how I would feel if I had an Oculus and was doing that in 3D! In FSX my natural caution of heights has never been activated (probably framerate related) but in Outerra, in certain circumstances my stomach can actually get a bit nervous.

Anyway, we are not the first to think of these possibilities. Here is an early vid of somebody driving out to the airport before hopping onto a plane.

That was a great video Devon! Loved the physics of driving up, onto the runway from the dirt road and then stopping by the plane and getting out and into it.

If you like the tanks and military stuff, you are definitely in for some fun.

Outerra has proven its capability now in every regime: We have props, spacecraft and jets as well as a copter, with a glider about to be released.

I can't wait for the clouds!!

... super new stuff here!

Baber, Michael, Devon - great screenshots and videos again - thanks a lot for sharing! And Your FSX/P3D add-on looks great Michael - it will certainly lok fantastic i Outerra as well i think!

Superb!

Enjoy flying and happy landings.

Was watching Gravity again last night (tense movie!) and thinking about those wispy CG clouds over the earth and wondering if Outerra will suceed in their ambition for real-time global cloud coverage. If they can do it, it will be amazing! In the meantime, I jumped into the Falcon and raced for orbit while using my imagination. All I needed was a few Star Destroyers to chase me.........

Pretty sure most of these could be ported to outerra, LOL

Now you've done it. There will be a Death Star floating over the earth before we know it!

Well I broke down and despite not having a new video card decided to try the demo out. I updated my drivers and installed and so far, pretty impressed with the engine, enough so i bought it to see what I could add and to help with ongoing development. I spent 30 minutes tooling around in the Apache, gave a good feeling of flight and while the dynami9cs and the controls are still far off from FS, it was enjoyable

Gratz on the purchase, probably amongst the best $15 you didn't spend at McDonalds.

The thing to keep in mind about the planes and etc released thus far is that you are essentially seeing a new community being birthed. The people are (very talented!) amateurs learning "on the job" and certain aspects reflect that. For instance, while planes are beautiful, people with skills and experience constructing detailed and accurate flight models using JSBSIM are short on the ground.

Think of it like being at the very beginnings of the FSX mod scene.

Hopefully the reservoir of skilled and experienced people in this community will see enough potential in the endeavor to lend a hand in earnest and really start getting things off the ground. For instance, the just released glider has no weather within the sim to take advantage of. On the other hand JSBSIM can apparently do detailed weather modeling, but nobody seems able to make head nor tails of it right now. (and of course, maybe the developers have something completely different in mind)

Outerra stands ready for that extra "push" to take it over the threshold. Lets see if it gets it!

In the meanwhile, at the site you will find literally dozens of free models contributed by users to play around with. Have fun!!! Bongodrivers EF-2000, down for the count after some internal difficulty's, is now once again available for download, and he is busy making a high-res cockpit. Grab it!

Don't like the flight model? Maybe you can change it. If you have the skills, dig in!
