An Interesting Future for Outerra

Featured Replies

Please do, the library is available here https://github.com/tonywob/world-models.  ;-). There are hundreds of buildings for different regions, the UK being the most complete. An example of the variety of buildings is shown here http://forum.avsim.net/topic/449610-what-good-data-can-give-you

Great! Another project on my large list of things to do :D

And, Wow! There are a lot of objects, almost 3.000!

Of course, the library Format in Outerra is not really attuned (I feel) to massive amounts of objects yet, as even with a few dozen, its very easy to get lost as to exactly what is what, especially if the name is pretty random such as object a235-97b (fake example) and there is no accompanying thumbnail provided!!

You're right, but until we have a better and organized object library, I can have the objects ready for placement, and why not, place some random houses manually :D

  • Well, Outerra has had only one variety of flora (pines) for quite some time, but have little birdies seen the future?

  • I think of it this way: there are two approaches to making a sim, particularly a flight sim. One is you make the planes and the things that go with the planes, and paste a somewhat satisfactory sketch

Then I would consider contacting the developers directly, and see if they might be interested in explicitly incorporating an Interface for your program/library (if possible) much as they already do for Jsbsim and Bullet, especially as they have already themselves mentioned OSM functionality.........

And......... Another Update!!!

Alaska test scenes
[Download] v0.1 - 26mb

Presentation

This is a work-in-progress test scene on Alaska.
Two airports are included :

  • Ted Stevens, with a fairly low detail level. No surroundings, only the runways and taxiways layout and some placeholder buildings. I have created this basic airport for the Levi's A380 :http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=2827.0. Since Anchorage is a very dense scenery, working on it with current tools will be really hard so I'm just gonna keep this basic version for big airliners, and will focus on smaller density airports.
  • Talkeetna is one of these. More detailed, located in a fairly nice landscape, not far away from Denali park.

Installation

Extract the archive. Copy the content of the cache folder in your own Outerra folder, located by default in Yourname/Outerra/cache/
If you want a quick and easy access to these airports, you can copy the campos included in this package in Yourname/Outerra/campos/earth.

Warning!
Please note that the following cache folder will erase all roads and object placement you may have done in this area. Files included are in : cache/earth/object/+z/11, 12 and 13.  I included a map in the .zip wich show what region of the world is modified. I strongly recommend to make a backup of you own cache/earth folder before installing the new ones.
I will try to update this scene when I have time, so I don't recommend you to add your own roads in this region, any new update using my cache will erase them.

Requirements

This folder only contains roads data and buildings position data.
It does not however, come with these models. I have tried to list below all the buildings used in this scene. You can install them and thanks their creators wink.gif.
Please make me know if something is missing. If you go to these locations without having installed them, the console will pop-up and show a wild number of red errors.
I think the whole content should work even in demo version.

I couldn't find back the thread for ProfessorX various models I'm using in this scene, so I have included them in this package. You have to extract it in YourName/Outerra/packages (as the majority of static objects).

So Levi or anyone else who knows, what is the basic principal is adding objects/aircraft into the game engine? I have tons of objects in many different formats and can make drivable vehicles. Seeing the airport images and what you have done with aircraft makes me want to see what can be done. Any info is helpful.

Here's a good tutorial from the user bugsblake (maybe a bit old, but useful): full vehicle setup 3ds max to outerra

I think this tutorial explains almost everything you need to know about importing stuff into Outerra.

I would like to say that I prefer to work with .FBX files instead of Collada(.dae) files. The .FBX importer opens with CTRL+F7.

For parts you want to access via script, called BONES, instead of selecting them in the Outerra's importer, you just need to re-name the object in question inside your modelling software, by adding 'BONE_' in front of it's name:

e.g. If the part you want to access via script is called, let's say 'fl_tire', it will become 'BONE_fl_tire'.

This way, Outerra aromatically recognize the object as a BONE, without having to worry about selecting the wanted parts in the importer to convert them into bones every time you re-import your model. This saved me a lot of time, especially if your model/vehicle/aircraft has dozens of parts you want to access via script!

Also this little wiki can be very useful: Wiki

Don't hesitate to ask question any question you have in Outerra's forum (also, lots of questions are already answered, take a look around the forum ;) ). There are many people willing to help :)

Thanks for sharing. Man! Outerra is coming along beautifully; I encourage everyone if you can; to support Outerra in whatever way you can.

Let’s finally help the advancement of our beloved flight simming hobby into the next millennium.

Cameni posted this excerpt from the FMX 2014 Outerra presentation in the Outerra forum this morning. http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=2861.msg30094#new

Works in Chrome, Opera, and Firefox, but doesn't seem to like Internet Explorer.

It demonstrates very well how and why Outerra is like nothing we have seen before in the Flight Simulation genre, and some of the potentials.

Outerra FMX 2014 presentation

As some of you have noticed, Angrypig gave a presentation about Outerra at FMX 2014 conference in Stuttgart. We still didn't receive the recording from that session to share with you, but here's an excerpt from the presentation, using HTML5 with some "live" slides showing some of the procedural effects in use in OT:

And.....

Finally heres a picture of me putzing around Over Acetones scenery area. Though the placement and other tools are still unfinished and a bit clumsy, the results are already promising for what things might look like when OSM is integrated, especially if Tonywob is successful in getting his program to work with Outerra.

Superb!

PANC looks really promising and so do the smaller airfields!

and the idea of importing some of the fantastic World2XPlane stuff into Outerra as well as all the other great looking "add-ons" presented here and sure much much more to come, is absolutely fantastic! absolutely stunning!

WOW!

Enjoy flying and happy landings.

Outerra forum members Bomber and Levi (among others) are adding a lot of rapid-fire flight sim momentum to Outerra lately. While Levi is very good at converting Models, he admits to being unskilled at flight dynamics. Conversely, Bomber, who is from the Flightgear community, has experience with JsbSim flight models. Collaboration should be interesting!

WikipediaThe ASK 13 is a two-seater glider that was built by Alexander Schleicher. It was and still is widely used for ab-initio training of glider pilots.

In collaboration with Flight Gear, and with permission from bomber (Simon), I'm porting this beautiful glider into Outerra Anteworld.
bomber (Simon) is responsible for doing the flight dynamics, and Me the rest.

I watched that presentation and I am totally blown away!

if this guy is blown away then it must be something good cause i never seen him blown away by anything

When you first see Outerra, its easy to think "Oh, a pretty graphics engine" and leave it at that. Once you stop to dig a bit deeper, and see whats really being attempted "under the hood" and how much thought is going into it, the respect tends to go up quite a few notches.

The million dollar question is, can they pull it off?

I'm rooting for them!
