June 15, 201411 yr Hi all. I have a dilemma, I have ordered a GTX 770 4GB to run P3D (Currently have GTX 560Ti). However, I have been reading around and it looks i may be better getting the 2GB version, due to OOMs (especially on FSX) Now, I do not intend to SLI therefore will only be using one monitor. Should I cancel and order the 2GB or stick with the 4GB version? Kind regards Adam
June 15, 201411 yr Commercial Member Do you plan to use the card only for FSX / P3D or for gaming as well? You may be better off with the 4GB of vRAM if you're also going to be playing FPS games. TFDi Design
June 15, 201411 yr Author I only plan to play FSX / P3D to be honest, not bothered about other games. Cheers Adam
June 15, 201411 yr Hi Adam, Ive answered your question on the p3d forum but to keep it short on here, due to the way dx11 works and handles texture loading get the 4gb version as p3dv2.2 can use more than 2gig of vram -Paul-
June 15, 201411 yr I've been running GTX770 4GB without OOM problems. mainly FSX. BUT, I don't fly heavies.
June 15, 201411 yr Moderator I too would recommending sticking with the 4GB GTX770. I run both FSX/A and P3Dv2 and have regularly had more than 2GB of the VRAM in use, typically between 2.5 and 3.2 GB to be more exact. Fr. June 16, 201411 yr I just today installed an EVGA 770 Classified, Factory Oc'd 4 gb....in my new build. Did a lot of researching and "me thinks" for now and the future, can't go wrong with the 4 gb. June 16, 201411 yr I have 6gb and there are no issues w/ OOMs, but rarely do I see more than 2Gb in use since P3D2.2 arrived. June 16, 201411 yr Good luck I have 770 4gb and the stutters drove me back to FSX DX10. It's remarkable how variable people's experiences are. Without a doubt P3D approaches perfect smoothness more often than FSX ever did for me, and all this with a much improved scenery complexity to performance ratio, in most situations. True to the absolute differences in the two rendering engines, there are situations in FSX that way outperform P3D, for example in top-down view. But when you look at image complexity, P3D V2.2 has much greater image complexity from more dense autogen and vegetation, and all at comparable or better frame rate than FSX. Now add in HDR/bloom. It's done beautifully, not too much, not too little, in 2.2. Performance hit is negligible. When the sim gets locked at the V-SYNC rate of 60, you have 100% ultimate smoothness. You can rock your wings left and right and it's just floating, buttery smooth. As frame rate drops, you lose some of this 100% smoothness. By the time you get below 25 or so, you've got a perceptible hit in performance, but it's still ultimately much better than FSX was in similarly stressed situations. I say 'stressed' because if you're less than the 60 V-SYNC lock, you're either CPU or GPU or buss limited, or some combination of them all, or so that is my understanding. June 16, 201411 yr Author Good luck I have 770 4gb and the stutters drove me back to FSX DX10. I would say you need to tweak perhaps as my 560Ti is only giving me very slight stuttering now after a couple of tweaks. I only have the 1gb version at the moment so the 770 at 4g will without doubt give me better performance. Adam
June 16, 201411 yr If you run FSX in DX10 mode (with the Fixer program) OOMs caused by the GPU's 4GB RAM will not be a problem. It might tend to make an OOM more likely in DX9 however. P3D benefits greatly from a GPU with a large amount of VRAM - the more the better - so going with the 4GB 770 is your best bet. It is the card I use. My previous GPU was also a 560Ti, and the performance improvement was notable in both FSX and P3D. June 16, 201411 yr I would say you need to tweak perhaps as my 560Ti is only giving me very slight stuttering now after a couple of tweaks. I only have the 1gb version at the moment so the 770 at 4g will without doubt give me better performance. I've done all the tweaks located thru the forums. I run no Virtual Cockpit, strictly scenery, my FPS is 70+. For my situation there is a slightly noticeable stutter every 3 seconds. I might play around a little more, but seems like most are content with the pause. I hope the next patch fixes it. If I find a solution I'll let you know.
