The 777, 787, and 748 have the ability to update navigation databases and EFB data via a wireless LAN (802.11) if the infrastructure is in place to support it. This same service also allows event data and logs to be uploaded from the aircraft.

 

Using cellular networks such as LTE for this type of ground based data transfer is also being looked into and could be available "soon" .

I know from one of the tech team members on the NGX project that the NG FMC gets updated via a PCMCIA cardbus device:

The real aircraft have the capability to have both the current and previous navdata installed too (not modeled presently in our stuff).

As for updating the real 777 database.....all I hope is that airline management in their "war again crews".....dont figure out one day that on long haul flights we have enough time to be programming a database update by hand!
