trying to get a weather add on

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I am trying to make fsx as realistic as I can, I am trying to decide which I should get REX 4, Active sky, Flight environment x,

I am thinking about getting REX 4 HD, is this enough to get better clouds detail, airport/runway markings? or should I go with FEX.

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Are you after textures, or a weather engine?

There is a thread about 'Your favourite weather engine' or something like that active at the moment where Active Sky Next wins hands down. But that has no textures...

I originally had Rex Essentials for textures and weather but then decided to go with ASN for weather and let Rex deal with the textures...I've not looked back....well except to look at the stunning clouds :)

REX4 gives awesom textures for skies and clouds, but also for airport environment, like runways, taxiways, groundmarkings, water, but it doesnt create any weather, it's textures only.

If you looking for a weather engine, which most people use next to REX4, you could have a look at FSGW, Opus, or ASN. I've got ASN myself and it's a very user friendly and intuitive program, one look on the interface and you can work it. ASN also has it's own textures and can be used without REX, but since I'm so used to REX I havent checked the ASN textures and cant tell you much about it.

A third option would be, is the older REX, REX3 Ess+OD. This one has REX textures ánd a build-in weather engine.

Cheers!

ASN doesnt have textures. "YET", but its the best weather engine out there in Aerosoft are working with them to get the most realistic weather Radar yet.

And there is a freeware textures package that is apparently quite good if it's an either/or for an engine or texture package.

So I'm looking into the same purchase for myself right now and had some questions. REX4 is textures only, or a weather engine and textures? Why would one not want to just use it for both if so, instead of buying it plus active Sky? Is ActiveSky just a lot better of a weather engine?

Also it is my understanding REX4 is the latest edition of REX and has a lot more textures than REX+OD? Or are these also two completely different types of add-on?

Is it simple to install REX and ASN and set it up as to only use the ASN weather engine but the REX textures?

I use REX for all my textures and FS Global Real Weather (FSGRW) for the weather engine, it's very straightforward and does a great job on getting the weather and winds right!

Cheers

For textures, I alternate between REX 4 and Flight Environment, both of which have no weather engine.

For weather engines, I alternate between ASN and FS Global Real Weather (FSGRW) both of which have no textures. I tend to prefer ASN's weather rendition but find it more demanding when the weather is complex which causes a drop in FPSs. FSGRW tends to be less demanding in terms of resources to display an identical weather scenario.

Rex Essential Plus for textures and ASN for weather generation.

Why Rex essintial, what are the main differences with that and REX4?

The main difference is rexe  has  a weather engine  within it  where as rex4  is only  a texture addon

Myself and the group I fly with all use this FREE weather engine now, it uses its own reporting stations and is hands down the most accurate weather I have seen in FSX, and that includes AS. Use FEX with it for texatures and it's unbeatable..

I use REXE for weather and REX4 for textures..looks amazing..soon though REX4 weather direct with it's new weather engine.

it will be a one stop shop for textures and weather engine.so maybe get REX4 texture direct and whenREX4 weather direct is released you can look at that as a weather generator.
