After playing with SImLauncherX and bugging Maarten via email, I have to say I am going to stay with version 9.3 (been using SimLauncher since version 8.9).

There are some pretty cool additions/enhancements in SLX versus 9.3. For example, the airport parking assignment list is pretty handy - it would have told me that Ramp Parking Medium 8 @ KMRY was occupied. Instead, I loaded up the sim to find I was parked in the middle of small Boeing. The weather at airport is also a nice enhancement, as is the radio stack display, fuel calculator, etc.

However, the inability to load an arbitrary flight plan from any directory is a show-stopper. I have perhaps hundreds of PLN files, arranged by geography (North America, Europe, etc), and within each of those are sub-directories (Western Roundup, Capital City Tour, etc). SLX, at least as far as I can tell, does not allow me to traverse or drill down into sub-directories to load a predefined flight plan (I use Plan G), whereas SimLauncher 9.3 does.

The other bugaboo is the inability to list my aircraft in the order and paint job that I like. The default for SLX seems to be "all variations", and frankly, I am uninterested in 90% of the paints for most aircraft. However, when I click off "show all variations" I get a pretty confused list. Starts out with Alabeo (good), but ends with A2A (huh?) with some Boeing, Lancair, Kodiak, and Tecnam in between. Maarten told me the sort order was Manufacturer/Type/Variation, but damned if I can order the aircraft to my liking by altering those values. I guess I could try Manufacturer = 1, Type = 1, Variation = 1, and so on, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having aircraft IDs. In SimLauncher 9.3 the first aircraft in the aircraft.cfg file was the one displayed. default no variations, so I see only the skins that I want to see and they are in correct sorted order, A2A first, Tecnam last. Simple, straight-forward, which I fear is not the case in SLX.

Eh, maybe I am just an old fart, resistant to change (still haven't pulled the trigger on P3D V2).

Maarten, think of my donation as a payment for all the enjoyment I have had from SimLauncher 9.3!     :Peace:

Hi John,

Sorry to hear you still cannot find out how to sort the aircraft list to your liking. It's actually pretty simple and, believe me or not, there's really no difference with the way SimLauncher sorted the aircraft. If you deselect 'show all variations', only the first variation in the aircraft.cfg file (the [fltsim.o] section) is shown. By default the list is sorted by Manufacturer first, then by Type and the by Variation. You can sort the list by clicking on the column header; if you want to sort by more than one column, hold the Ctrl-key down while clicking on the column headers. You can filter the list by clicking on the little filter icons in the column header or by typing in the filter box on the ribbon. Group the list by dragging a column header over the top of the list. Sorting order, filter setting and grouping is persisted, so it comes back when you restart SLX. The filtering will be reset if you select a flight that has an aircraft that does not appear in the filtered list. The filter and sorting settings you choose in the List View are carried over to the Tiles View. You can reset everything back to default by selecting 'Reset' from the backstage menu. If you don't fly a particular aircraft anymore, simply rename the panel.cfg file and rebuild the database.

I really don't know what else I can do to make things better in this area.

thanks, Maarten

Hi John,

To select flight plans from several different subdirectories, you can create a new profile for each one of them and select the appropriate folder in the profile settings. Alternatively you can edit the current profile and select a different folder for the 'flight plans folder' entry. Once you save the profile settings, the flight plans will be loaded from the newly selected folder.

Hope this helps,

Maarten,

any chance that this wonderful tool could be run as a WideFS/FSUIPC client? I see the folder structure and shares mentioned in the manual. However, I am wanting to avoid any sharing of folders across the network due to potential vulnerabilities.

Don

Hi Don,

SimLauncherX communicates with the simulator using SimConnect. I need access to files and folders on the simulator machine for flights, flight plans, configuration files etc. This cannot be done through SimConnect or FSUIPC. Sharing files and folders is not a security risk as long as you configure the firewall and access rights to your shares properly.

thanks, Maarten

Hello Maarten, having downloaded SimLauncherX, I note it has downloaded and installed SixServer, too!

I have a Windows Security Alert for Windows Firewall, which tells me it has blocked 'some features', which seem to do with my network, etc.

As I do not seem to find this question raised before, please elaborate what SixServer is and what is it meant to do? It is asking if I want to communicate with (i) private networks - there is no tick in the box and (ii) there is a tick in the box for public networks.

I use FSUIPC Wide Client for all FS networking.

I will explore SimLauncherX when this question has been answered. After all, should I allow access to my network with software when I have no idea what the function of it is, in the first place. Normally, for the integrity of the network, the answer would be no, until it is understood.

Now I have egg all over my face, thanks to the topic on networking. Disregard my question and I will proceed and now download SimLauncherX on a client :Monkey:

Regards

Hi Martin,

Glad you found out how it works. SlxServer is mentioned in the user guide, but I will add a few sentences describing that you will get warning messages from the firewall both on the server and the client.

thanks, Maarten

I can't find the download link for this application? The link in the first post doesn't seem to work?

Can anyone point me in the right direction please :)

WillsB3 - It maybe that Maarten has taken them down temporarily, to add items into the manual. He did say in an email to me he would be adding some text.

For Maarten. Still constantly freezes on the client after a few minutes.

Just one question: can you visualise weather generated by ASN?

Plan-G currently offers a text table of ASN-generated weather on filed flighplan. How does SimLauncherX handle this?

It's a deal-breaker for me.

Thanks!

Hi ?,

  1. Please read the forum rule.
  2. Please read the user guide.
  3. ASN weather is shown as a map overlay: you can select wind, temperature and weather stations using the Overlays tab on the ribbon for the map window.
  4. ASN weather is used to calculate the values in the flight plan 'Head wind' column of the waypoints grid. Flight plan details are shown by clicking on the little + icon next to the flight plan name.

thanks, Maarten
