FSX: Steam Edition for Take-Off on December 18

Recommended Posts

I never even heard of Dovetail before discussions arose on Avsim about them.  Is this even a realistic thought to believe that some company is going to come out of nowhere and make "FS 2017" or whatever that constitutes an adequate replacement for FSX?  Maybe if they had the source code to FSX, which others have said, they don't.  Remember, FSX represents an evolution, a twenty year franchise with each subsequent version built up on the shoulders of the next.  I understand that this may have led to problems of its own, obviously, resulting in FSX having a lot of inefficiency, but does a company like Dovetail have the resources and expertise to develop a clean-sheet Flight Simulator that comes anywhere near the capabilities of FSX?  I'm not asking that question sarcastically, but I do bring some skepticism to the table.  Does it?

The whole point is to make a better sim for all of us. Including you.

That's Milviz's job - not anyone else's.

Everybody cares about Milviz Ad On's

It appears DoveTail doesn't. Also those who don't buy Milvix's add-ons - not every one does!

Milviz,

It's a no win situation and you'll wear your fingers to the bone. Sometimes it is best just not to respond back.

The fact is dovetail CEO knows as do most CEO dealing with simulators know where to draw the line. Make 90% satisfied with the new add ons and features and 10% of users just ignore them. Next flight sim wont built around 3rd party payware developers why give away the pipes.

No one here actually knows exactly what source code they have access to for use in their upcoming sim. All they have said is it will be based on Microsoft flight technology. MS Flight has the more modern sim engine and was already built for the same type of business model as Dovetail's current products, but I haven't seen anything to say they aren't doing something based on FSX or ESP code. As some on here who were involved with Flight have said, missing features like ATC could be fixed and re-enabled, so  basing it on Flight may not be a bad thing.

Next flightsim won't be a success if that is the case, a new Sim without new addons being released regularily will hold the gaming publics attention for a few months only (look at Flight!) for a great example, some great ideas and then they ran out of content and resorted to cockpitless planes.

The Flightsim community will not be interested in DLC from Dovetail only unless they can match the likes of PMDG, A2A, Realair, Milviz ect.

I would not bet the farm on Dovetail being able to match those developers judging by comments on their rail sim.

Hey Milviz,

I would keep your dealings (or non dealings with) DTG off the forums. Remember you are a business owner so things like this are better kept between you and DTG and not really necessary to air your grievances over the internet.

Maybe DoveTail doesn't care about Milviz add-ons, and that it has a different corporate model to Flight?

Do you think  Dovetail paid Microsoft to licence FSX without  knowing the history of Flight - every one else did?

This is the sort of things that can happen when you go public like this. Too much of this sort of stuff on the internet which has no value really

MS could not give Flight away for free.

Maybe, after 8 years, MS paid Dovetail to take FSX away. Saves MS costs of inventory & world-wide distribution.

No acknowledgement to dev requests is crazy. They are the cornerstone of our hobby.

Payware makers are scared of dovetail but they control the pipelines now, and will see how this plays out. Some 3rd party makers wont like this setup. Oh well, too much specialization for items that no use for average simmer. Gotta provide some realism but not at expense of newcomers.

The big problem for Dovetail is that there is an alternative (and very attractive) option for current addon developers (P3D). If those same addon developers aren't impressed with the path that Dovetail intend to take, then they will go elsewhere.

Well, but then there's a little snag... That big elephant in the room, you know, the Elephant Ultimately Limiting Access to the other platform for the general public. Being effectively out of the flightsim market, MS might not have been interested in enforcing the terms of that deal, but DTG may have a rather different take on the matter...

It is kind of like comparing VHS and Betamax......Betamax was by far the better format but the masses adopted VHS

P3D won't appeal to the masses like FSX will over Steam or have anywhere close to the type of mass marketing that DTG will have. Steam is a massive marketing machine that gets people to buy things like Goat Simulator
