Further FSX and FSX:SE benchmark test

Featured Replies

What was recompiled? FSX.exe or some dlls? if that is the case , can't we just copy/paste patch some of the improvments to FSX, and forgot the Steam stuff?

I very much doubt it.

The new CFG in FSX:SE is 'aligned' to the newly compiled core sim files.  For example, FSX:SE's CFG has the entry [TEXTUREMAXBANDWIDTH]=160.

FSX's stock level for that value =40.     A level of 160 in MS FSX wouldn't even be recognized (I discovered this while entering the FSX_SE.cfg into Bojote's Venetubo tool as an experiment; ......for that value it returned a message saying "value is out of range and will not be recognised by FSX"..........

yet that's the stock value for FSX:SE.

The CFG file is just a set of instructions for the core sim files;  it's clear that both the instructions, and core files have changed in FSX:SE.    Without this being the case, it wouldn't be possible to re-compile FSX.   You don't recompile software purely by means of a CFG file.

So stuff has changed, that's for sure.

But the important thing, is not what platform you're using Jim, but that you're having fun!! ... a lot of people on these FSX / FSX:SE threads seem to have forgotten that that's what it's all about.

You'll notice that I have NEVER questioned a single person about what software they use or why they use it. Only when they attempt to force stuff on me.

No, can't be done.

You'll notice that I have NEVER questioned a single person about what software they use or why they use it.

You are joking right, Jim? ...... You've raved on constantly across a number of threads since FSX:SE was released, how it's the fools choice, a waste of money why buy it, it's "just FSX", etc, etc.

..... are we to believe that you're completely neutral, open-minded, and unbiased with regards to the MS FSX / FSX:SE debate?

...anyone buying that?

Only when they attempt to force stuff on me.

Can you refer us to the thread where someone was trying to force FSX:SE on you, rather than just talking about their own experiences?

Show me one.

Post # 77 of this thread.

Out of this one.

Post # 77 of this thread.

Ok, here is post #77 of this thread ;-

How now? Where are all the "..DTG sucks, why buy something you already own, etc........."

A reminder of the first rule: Keep an open mind!

Lets hope we all remember that while awaiting whatever DTG has up their sleeve for next year.

I definitely wouldn't agree that that is someone telling you, Jim Skorna what sim to use!!

It's just a general comment, it's not addressed to you, and it doesn't tell anyone what sim to use!

Bah..... poor effort.

Why doesn't all the community band together, PMDG / Orbx / Rex / and pitch in to purchase the code from Microsoft? I mean after Microsoft gave license to Dovetail, Microsoft stands to get more by re licensing it again, unless of course it is withholding out of spite because the third party community didn't support FLIGHT? Or maybe someday Microsoft hopes to get into real Flight Sim again and knows that if it let the likes of PMDG have at it, that it would be sacrificing their own cash cow... probably same reason MS didn't view Dovetail as a threat, because DT is not a serious company when it comes to simulation aspect. They just want to cater to the massess and dumped down DLC.

unless of course it is withholding out of spite because the third party community didn't support FLIGHT?

MS didn't want 3rd party developers in the game for FLIGHT! .... they didn't even invite most of them to the table.   They intended it to be a locked-in environment, where only they could develop and release DLC content.

[DTG..] They just want to cater to the massess and dumped down DLC.

Where is the evidence of this?   We know that Orbx are on board with Steam / FSX:SE, and we know that Flight 1 will be too.  I could understand the DLC content for FLIGHT! being seen as 'dumbed down' but see no evidence or sign whatsoever that DTG will release only dumbed down content.    I don't see much dumbed down stuff coming out of Orbx or Flight 1.

After days of attempt, still no luck with the purchase of FSX-SE from the Steam platform. Tried to buy it on day 18, with no success. The support server was apparently down so I could not even open a ticket. Tried again on December 24, again at no avail, this time however I was able to open a ticket explaining the error I get when I try to complete the transaction. After two days, however, no sign of reply from Steam yet.

Note for the mods.

Sorry for being OT, I just did not want to create another thread about FSX-SE. If some guy from Steam is monitoring this thread, please contact me in private. I would really enjoy purchasing the product as long as it is offered at a discounted price and I am honestly surprised both for the transaction issues I encountered and the lack/delay in support. I own dozens of addons and I never had such problems so far.

I'm still waiting for definite confirmation that VAS usage is significantly altered in this version. Or else, its a waste of money.

But seriously, if I were you I would jump cockamany bat crap crazy into the air if positive changes were made towards the was usage in FSX:SE. I can see the OP's first post, yes, and its very promising, but I wish more of you could post examples using very heavy add ons such as PMDG, Active Sky, Aerosoft Megaports, ORBX scenery etc etc.

VAS usage can actually drop in vanilla FSX as well, not much but a little, in certain scenarios. If I load up PMDG at a heavy airport and turn the head up and down and all the way to the sides I magically gain 200-250 MB VAS, and I know others who does as well. How? Beats me.

I agree with you 100% mate, moee addons need to be tested before everyone gets all excited about no ooms

Its your lucky day fellas! Your proof has been delivered!

Thank you. My eyebrows were raised like a cartoon characters when I read that one.......

Interesting test although it would be infinitely better with a high end payware aircraft (ngx, 777 or better yet ConcordeX) but I am not sure if those aircraft are working in SE

I disagree that "its a waste of money" (sic), if for no other reason than the fact that it is essentially a one pass installation, instead of a half-day nightmare of installing three DVD's worth of files, then having to install yet another DVD to update to Acceleration...

...then chase down all of the "tweaks and fixes" to make it maybe work.

Oh yes, in case no one has noticed, FSX:SE has already been silently updated twice since release.

You make a very convincing argument there!

Trust me, as soon as PMDG releases their installers I will. But even with lesser settings in FSX with the same aircraft and no KPSP scenery, FSX couldnt complete half of the pattern. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/458260-ms-fsx-vs-dt-fsx-se-the-conclusive-performance-benchmark/

The proof is in the pudding. FSX SE is phenomenal with VAS

Interesting test although it would be infinitely better with a high end payware aircraft (ngx, 777 or better yet ConcordeX) but I am not sure if those aircraft are working in SE

Which is really the primary problem with SE for most people right now.

I am also taking this test with a grain of salt. The op's FSX install performs worse with GA planes in small airports than most get with PMDG planes at international hubs. Those FSX frame rates do not represent what the sim is capable of with that hardware.

Ethan Edelson

The op's FSX install performs worse with GA planes in small airports than most get with PMDG planes at international hubs.

But that's the whole point though isn't it? (that you've gloriously missed). Yes the performance in the FSX screenshots is poor. But with the same hardware and software, with the FSX:SE installation, it is not poor. There lies the comparison!

It's a bit hollow saying "those results don't represent what FSX can do", when on this system and config you're seeing what it actually does do, and then with a comparison to FSX:SE, which performed considerably better.

It doesn't matter whether you're testing FSX and FSX:SE on a NASA super computer, or a Sinclair ZX81;  as long as you're testing both sims with the same conditions, then you get a reasonable comparison....
