Does anyone have any idea what graphics settings are most closely linked to the terrain.dll crashes? Is mesh more important than autogen?

I was getting the terrain dll crash after around ~2.5 hrs of flights. I switched my scenery complexity to the middle notch (was full right) and autogen density to one notch left of middle (was one notch left of full right) and this seems to have eliminated them.

I did notice that I have my mesh complexity and resolution set much higher than Mr. Dowson's (due to some instructions for Orbx payware airports) and I was wondering if I adjusted my settings in those fields to be similar if I could put my scenery complexity and autogen back to where they were and still avoid the crashes while having less of a visual impact on my scenery?

When I received the terrain.dll crash it was when I was flying over the pond from Las Vegas to London.  I let FSX go overnight while I slept and it crashed right under Greenland which was roughly 4-5 hours or so into the flight.  Don't know the exact amount of time elapse.  My settings were on full.  Everything including scenery and autogen density to the right (extremely dense).

I have not tried it on a lower setting.

This was when I had FTX Global + Vector + openLC Europe installed.  I also had FS Global Ultimate Mesh - The Americas installed.  All this was under FSX Steam.

I have recently uninstalled FSX Steam and went back to the boxed version when I found out a bunch of people were having this same issue.  Then I hear Dovetail knows about it and is working on a fix.

So hopefully Dovetail will patch this up.  I've also heard that it's completely random.  Some users (like yourself have said that it doesn't have to be long flights and they've had the crash in 1-3 hour flights too.  Also, some have experienced the crash without any addons installed at all and just ran FSX Steam stock to test it.

Not sure but sounds like it's directly related to something with FSX Steam.  I've never had this crash on FSX boxed.

Thanks for the rundown, sounds like I may have been experiencing a bit of a placebo effect with the changed settings then. Luckily I ordered a boxed copy recently and have it sitting on my desk. Now to figure out the best way to get my scenery and addons onto a new installation
