DoveTail Games: Vague, But Hopeful, Details on the Next Flight Simulator

What more do we want/demand?

A detailed version of EINN Shannon for P3D, and Earth Simulations reforming for just long enough to release a super detailed version of Jersey, but sadly that is a "want" that will never be fulfilled

Now whether they have the incentive or desire to mess with core aspects of the simulation rather than dabble at the edges is a very different question - and one I suspect is driven more by license limitations in their agreement with MS than anything else. More likely, I would have thought, for DTG to use the basic tools to compete with DCS and IL2 in the shoot`em up front, than try to corner a market for `serious simming` that's met by educational and commercial products such as P3D. And to a lesser extent by XPlane.

Good points!

Very difficult to say with certainty what the "new" DTG sim will be. However, even though their agreement with MS prohibits them from making substantial changes (i.e. "adding new features") to the existing FSX product they are currently selling - they have made substantial improvements to the 10-year-old FSX engine. The SE version runs substantially smoother, and every new iteration of SE has shown better and better handling of VAS.

This, at least, proves to me that DTG has some pretty skilled software engineers in their stable working on the existing FSX code base - and it seems reasonable to assume that the same individuals will be /are working on the "new" flight sim product. This, IMO, bodes well for the future.

Updating and improving existing code that was originally written elsewhere is one of the most difficult aspects of software engineering. Quite possible that at least some former ACES team members are now working for DTG - but in any case, I'm convinced that there are some pretty capable developers on the DTG staff, and I am not prepared to assume that the upcoming DTG sim will be overly dumbed-down "junk".

Time will tell!

Outerra isn't destined to become a civilian flight simulator.   As long as I have been following Outerra development it has no funding and the developers still accept it still doesn't have funding.

Your long term feelings for the program are well known. Even the developers know!

In cases such as this, I'm always quite content to let time be the judge. This would apply to DTGs new offering as well.

If Outerra is so much better why hasn't been able to attract any funding?

Well, that is a great question which I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to.  I'm not saying it IS better, but no-one who has looked at Outerra can honestly say that they would not like it to be their flight simulator world.  Why has no-one stepped up to fund it?

What do we want in a sim, apart from raindrops, world photo scenery & other 'Holy Grails'?

One of the things I miss is true user participation. I remember years ago looking at my home area in FSX and seeing how completely inaccurate it all was, with not a thing I could do about it. Current sim scenery is pretty much etched in stone without skill in the use of very specialized tools, and even then the option for real change is severely limited. DTG's train simulator provides the tools, In-game, to make significant changes easily and intuitively, and one can hope that their flight sim might have similar functionality.

Just that alone could be a game changer, allowing users greater control than ever of the sim environment.

It's one of the exciting things about Outerra as well, and it's increasingly common in modern sandbox worlds, while not being common at all in our familiar sims. Even X-planes lego block system is fairly limited, and placing of rivers, altering streets, etc can be a very complex process not for the faint of heart.

On the other hand, X-plane compensates a bit with a very powerful plane making tool. I doubt that DTG could match that.

I think the answer is self-evident.

Agree with Gerry. That Outerra bird has flown. It's now been `in development` since 2008, and has yet to attract any attention - any at all - as a platform for developers. It's just another dead horse still being flogged. And DTG didn't want it!

IF it attracted funding then who knows what might be achieved? But it hasn't, so any speculation is futile. It isn't a flight simulator, and doesn't look like it ever will be.

One of the developers themselves mentioned reasons in the thread I linked to. The goals, challenges, and possibilities are all available to be explored right here at Avsim in the appropriate forum, or at the Outerra forum itself.

Mostly because I'm not interested in getting involved in yet another of the confrontational and antagonistic post-counter-post things that you seem to enjoy. (Give it a rest!) They are just silly, and I won't be responding to you again on this topic, in this thread. Bring it up as a new thread/topic in the Avsim Outerra forum, and I will respond voluminously.

Everyone in the world is entitled to an opinion, and as I mentioned, I am quite happy to let time decide.

You, know what? I think I would much rather let a mod decide that, after reading the thread. In fact, I have just taken the opportunity to self report my "thread hi-jacking" and I suggest that if you are concerned, you do so as well.

In the meantime, I take it you won't start a thread in the appropriate forum like I asked, because your actual point as is too often the case, was simply to be contrary.

Here is a real and existing next gen flight simulator:

http://www.dvcsim.com/

Too bad it's strictly (and honest-to-god) professional.  BTW, LM uses this in some of their combat-grade simulators.

GO DTG GO!!!!  Give us what we crave and (well, almost) eveyone will be happy.

I don't see a single flight sim program at that dvcsim web site. I do see image generators though.
